World War II


Kenneth Russell Mason was born Feb. 17, 1922 to Jones Spencer Mason (1889-1954) & Melissa Elizabeth "Betty" Midyette (1895-1991).  Kenneth married Delores Gibbs on Jan. 17, 1944.  Kenneth joined the US Navy Oct 23, 1940 after serving in the CCC – Manteo Camp from July 1939 until October 1940.  He received basic training in Norfolk, Va. and was assigned to the battleship USS Arkansas.  He served on the Arkansas in the North Atlantic from December 1940 until February 1942.  After leaving the Arkansas, he was assigned to the anti-aircraft cruiser USS San Juan in the Pacific from February 1942 until January 1944.  After leaving the San Juan, he served on the heavy cruiser USS Pasadena from January 1944 until the end of the war.  He returned to the states and was stationed in Yorktown, Va. thru 1946.  He retired 07/10/1960 as a Petty Officer 1st Class in Norfolk, Va.  He currently lives in Swan Quarter.
