May 21, 1894 - Dept. of Interior: Tillmon D. Miller, Private; Tilman D. Miller of Capt. Graves' Co. A, 1st Regt. NC Vol. Artillery was enrolled Jan. 21, 1863 and mustered out June 27, 1865 as of Co. H, NC Infantry to which the designation of the organization was changed May or June 1863. During this period the rolls show him present except June 30, 1864 when he was absent on detached service. Manning and was honorably discharged at New Bern, NC on June 27, 1865; that he is 5'6" tall, has a dark complexion and hazel eyes; that on or about Nov. 13, 1863 he contracted piles from heavy lifting and moving of a cannon; that he was treated at Ft. Clark in Hatteras in the latter part of 1863; that now he is a farmer but when he enrolled he was a fisherman; that since leaving the service he has resided at Goose Creek Island, NC (The above census records shows he lived in Dare Co. at least until 1880.) US Pension Record: Jan. 17, 1890 - Widow's Declaration for Pension: Lydia B. O'Neal, age 42, states that she is the widow of John B. O'Neal who enlisted at Hatteras as a private on Mar. 28, 1863 in Co. H, 1st Regt. of NC Vols. and who incurred an injury of his side and breast at Ft. Hatteras in the fall of 1864 while in the line of duty by falling with a wheelbarrow of dirt from a plank; that he died in Feb. 1888. Widow's Pension Filed: Jan. 23, 1890 (#413.159); Minor's Pension Filed: (no date) (#770.862).
Feb. 26, 1890 - War Dept.: John B. O'Neal of Co. H was enrolled on May 12, 1863 and mustered out with the company on June 27, 1865. From June 30, 1864 to Feb. 28, 1865 he held the rank of private and during that period the rolls show him present except as follows: June 30, 1864 on detached duty at Ocracoke. Other records furnish nothing abnormal. No medical records found.

US Pension Record: Invalid Pension Filed: Sept. 10, 1890 (#841.058). Sept. 27, 1892 - Affidavit of Thomas C. O'Neal, age 52, resident of Buxton, states he was a Private in Co. H, 1st NC Infantry; that on April 5, 1881 he left Elizabeth City bound home in an oyster boat and that he was on deck the entire voyage through Albemarle, Croatan and Pamlico Sounds and was exposed to wind, sleet and snow for about 14 hours; that he contracted pneumonia and was sick at home and confined to bed from April 5-June 10, 1881; that he was left with a cough and pains in his right breast; that he has lung and kidney disease.
May 23, 1895 - Record & Pension Office: Thomas O'Neil in Capt. Graves' Co., 1st NC Artillery was enrolled Jan. 21, 1863 and mustered out June 27, 1865. Because Co. A, 1st NC Artillery prior to Feb. 28, 1863 became Co. H, 1st NC Infantry in May or June 1863.
May 24, 1920 - Thomas C. O'Neal, age 77, resident of Buxton, states that he requires regular attention because of blindness and rheumatism. (I don't understand why he says that he is a resident of Buxton because he was living in Elizabeth City with his son immediately prior to his death.)

US Pension Record: Widow's Pension Filed: June 7, 1883 (#418.975). April 25, 1885 - War Dept.; Adj. General's Office, Washington, DC: Warren D. O'Neal, a private of Co. H, 1st Regt. NC Volunteers reported on file from May 1863 to June 1865. Aug. 21, 1864: detached service at Ocracoke; Nov. 6, 1864: gone to Newbern in charge of prisioners, returned Nov. 10, 1864. Company returns April 25 show him doing guard duty at Portsmouth and Ocracoke. No evidence of alleged disability. (There is more info in this pension record mainly about children and marriage date.)
