US Pension Records: James Mason - Enlisted in Co. A, 2nd NC Volunteers on Nov. 18, 1863 at Beaufort, NC; Age: 44; Born: Hyde Co.; Height: 6'0"; Complexion: Dark; Hair: Dark; Eyes; Hazel. Farmer. Transferred to Co. F, 1st NC Volunteers at Fort Macon on Feb. 27, 1865 to be with his son Jesse Mason. Discharged June 27, 1865. After the war, he lived near Leechville where he was a laborer in a grist mill. Ill health due to being shot twice in a skirmish near New Bern. He lost and index finger and was shot through the right leg just above the ankle.

September 25, 1893--Declaration for Original Invalid Pension
   Daniel S. Meekins, age 50 & resident of Powell's Point, Currituck Co., N.C., states that he enlisted on June 14, 1863 as a private in Co. "H", 1st Reg. N.C. Infantry commanded by Capt. E.C. Manning and was honorably discharged at New Bern, N.C. on June 27, 1865; that he is 5'6" tall, has a dark complexion, black hair & blue eyes; that he is now suffering from a hurting back and kidney disease and cartarrah in the head; that he has applied for pension under certificate #973.078.

September 20, 1894--Commissioner of Pensions
   Daniel s. Meekins, Co. "H", 1st Reg. N.C. Inf., was enrolled June 14, 1863 and mustered out with company June 27, 1865.  He was 20 years old, 5'6" tall, dark complexion, grey eyes, brown hair, born on Hatteras Banks and his occupation was a laborer.  He held the rank of private.  No medical records found.

Meekins for about 7 years and Truxon has worked & fished with him ever since he has known him and he has always complained with hurting in his back and they are sure the rheumatism was not bought on by vicious habits.

November 18, 1899--Questionnaire
   Daniels S. Meekins of Powell's Point, states that his wife's maiden name is Julie Williams and they were married at Powell's Point in September 1888 by Alexander Owens, magistrate; he states he was first married to Salina Midgett in 1865 but she died in Collington, N.C. in 1875.  He was married the second time to Mary A. Stetson on October 3, 1878 & she died January 9, 1885.  His children are as follows:

   Daniel S. Meekins, age 63 & resident of Powell's Point, N.C., states he enrolled at Fort Hatteras June 16, 1863 as a private in Co. "H", 1st Reg. of the Union of N.C. Volunteers and was honorably discharged at Newbern, N.C. July 27, 1865; that at the time of his enlistment he was 5'6" tall, has a dark complexion, brown eyes & hair and was a fisherman by trade; that he was born November 21, 1843 at Chicamacomico, N.C.; that since leaving the service he has lived on Body Island, Colington and Powells Point; that he is a pensioner under the old law on certificate #1007.035 at $6.00 per month.

Stetson on October 3, 1878 and she died January 9, 1885 (she probably died in 1886 since the twins were born in Nov. 1885; that Julie A. Williams was previously married to George P.D.    Daniels S. Meekins, who was paid $40.00 to February 4, 1919 has this day been dropped from the roll because of death on April 10, 1919 (Death certificate was included which said he died of heart failure during the night).

June 24, 1919--Declaration for Widow's Pension
   Julia Meekins, age 76 & resident of Mamie, Currituck Co., N.C., states she is the widow of Daniel S. Meekins; that she was married under the name of Julia A. Brice to said Daniel S. Meekins on September 2, 1888 by A Owens, J.P. at Mamie, N.C.; that their former marriages were dissolved by death of her husband and his wife; that she has not heretofore applied for pension.

   A.B. Midgett, age 66 & resident of Powells Point, N.C., states that Mrs. Julia A. Meekins was married to George P.D. Brice and lived together for several years until he died on or about Dec. 1885; that Julia then married Daniel S. Meekins on or about 1888 and lived together as man and wife until his death on April 10, 1919 and that Mrs. Julia Meekins has not remarried since his death.  A.B. midgett states that for the last 36 years he has resided within 200 yards of the house wherein D.S. Meekins and Julia Meekins lived together; that they never divorced; that Daniel S. Meekins had been twice previously married, the 1st time to Salina Midgett who died and was buried on the western side of Collington in 1874 and the 2nd marriage was to Mary A. Stetson who died and was buried in 1885 on the eastern side of Collington.

   Nancy Gibson, age 76 & resident of Powell's Point, states that she has lived within 1/2 mile of Mrs. Julia A. Meekins for over 40 years & has known her longer; that she & Daniel S. Meekins lived together as man & wife and were never divorced; that she was present at his burial in the yard where Julia & Daniel Meekins lived; that Julia A. Meekins had been once previously married to George P.D. Brice; that she has known Daniel S. Meekins for 50 years or longer and that he had been twice previously married, 1st to Salina Midgett and 2nd To Mary A Stetson, sister to Julia A. Meekins, both of whom were buried on Collington, N.C.

December 13, 1919--Pension Increase
   Julia A. Meekins, widow of Daniel S. Meekins, is entitled to a pension at the rate of $25.00 per month to June 24, 1919 and to continue during her widowhood.

December 8, 1922--Pensioner Dropped from Roll
   Julia A. Meekins, who was last paid $30.00 to Dec. 4, 1922 has been dropped from the roll because of death on November 29, 1922.

December 26, 1922--Application for Reimbursement
   Chloe B. White, age 40 & resident of Elizabeth City, N.C., makes the following declaration in order to obtain reimbursement from the accrued pension for expenses paid in the last sickness and burial of Julia A. Meekins, who was a pensioner under certificate #880.934.  That she is the daughter of Julia A. Meekins; that she is a widow; that Julia's death was caused by pneumonia; that pensioner's last sickness began in August 1919; that she (Chloe B. White) and her daughter, Besta White, nursed Julia during her last sickness; that Julia A. Meekins lived in Elizabeth City with Chloe B. White and died there on November 29, 1922.

NC Artillery on Feb. 7, 1863 and mustered out June 27, 1865. Designation was changed May or June 1863 to Co. H, 1st NC Infantry.
May 4, 1897 - Declaration for Original Invalid Pension: James Meekins, age 51 & resident of Rodanthe, states he entered into service as a private of Co. H commanded by E.C. manning and was honorably discharged June 27, 1865. He states he is 5'8" tall, has a light complexion, dark hair and blue eyes; that is now suffering from rheumatism and kidney trouble and weak and soar eyes and piles and bowel disease. Widow's Pension Filed: July 1, 1921 (#907.647). (This is a lengthy pension and gives more info on children, etc.)

Devindorf and was honorably discharged at Chattanooga, NC on July 15, (it states June 27 elsewhere in this pension) 1865; that he is 5'9" tall, has a dark complexion, black hair and brown eyes; that on or about Aug. 15, 1863 he contracted a fever and has been affected with piles ever since; that he was treated at Fort Hatteras and Camp Wool by Army surgeons Ayers, Campbell and Hand. His widow was listed as Annie W. Gray of Salvo. He contracted a cold while on guard duty and it settled in his lungs which caused hemorrhaging and his eventual death.
