US Pension Record (Partial info): Invalid Pension Filed: July 30, 1890 and Mar. 6, 1907 (#806.568). Letter from Commissioner of Pensions dated Feb. 26, 1891 - Allen W. Gray was enrolled Feb. 14, 1863 & mustered out with Co. H, 1st NC Infantry on June 27, 1865. May 6, 1891 Affidavit - Allen W, Gray, age 54, states he is suffering from rheumatism & heart disease; that the rheumatism started about 7 years ago in the hands and shoulders, the heart disease has been troubling him for some time. Upon a doctor's exam he was found to be 5'11 ½ tall, weighed 138 pounds, had swelling of the middle ring fingers of both hands and can only partially flex them; a slight hypertrophy of the heart, external hemorhoridal tumors and piles. The rest of this pension record states the name of his wife and marriage date, the names of his living children and their birth years and the death date of Allen W. Gray.

US Pension Record: Aug. 26, 1882 - Declaration for original invalid pension Banister M. Gray, age 49 & resident of Kinnekeet, NC, states he was enrolled June 17, 1863 in Co. I, 1st regiment commanded by R.J. Allen and was discharged at Chattanooga near New Bern on or about July 15, 1865; he is 5'5 ½" tall, has a light complexion, auburn hair and blue eyes; that in January 1864 at Hatteras he contracted tetter in the eyes by cold contracted on duty which greatly impaired his sight and from which he has never recovered; that he was treated at Camp Wool Hospital at Hatteras from the time of disease until discharged; that since leaving the service he has resided in Kinnekeet and he is a fisherman. Invalid Pension Filed: Sept. 23, 1882 (#297.063).
Aug. 14, 1883 - War Dept. - Banister M. Gray, a private in Co. I, was enrolled on June 19, 1863 at Hatteras Banks and is reported on the muster roll to June 30, 1863. Present and so reported to April 30, 1865. He was mustered out with the company on June 27, 1865 at New Bern as a private. Regimental return for January 1864 does not report him absent. Company morning reports show him Aug. 14, 1864 sent to hospital and returned to company June 13, 1865 from absent sick to present for duty. Cause of sickness not states. No evidence of alleged disability. May 4, 1898 - Dept. of Interior - Banister gives names & birth dates of his children and marriage dates of his 2 wives. Nov. 13, 1912 - Pension dropped from roll because of death on Oct. 29, 1912. Pensioner was last paid at $24.00 per month to Aug. 4, 1912.
Widow's Pension Filed: Nov. 29, 1912 (#755.538); gives marriage dates, deaths and births of children.
Aug. 12, 1933 - Application by Caroline W. Miller, age 54, for reimbursement of expenses incurred in the death of her mother, Rosa M. Gray, widow of Banister M. Gray.

Article in "Island Breeze": April 1995: "...D.M., as he was known, was a surfman of skill and courage in the tradition of the U.S. lifesaving service. Dark-skinned with black eyes and stout with powerful hands, he was a trusted oarsman under Capt. Benjamin B. Dailey at both Cape Hatteras and Creed's Hill stations. D.M. participated in the exciting Creed's Hill rescue of the captain and crew of the casting schooner "A.B. Goodman", which wrecked on Diamond Shoals in April 1882...".

Declaration for Widow's Pension: Oct. 13, 1916 - Martha A. Gray of Frisco & widow of Davis Gray, states he enrolled at Cape Hatteras in Jan. 1863 in Co. H, 1st NC Infantry and was honorably discharged July 14, 1865; that she married Davis Gray under the name of Martha Lyons; that she had been previously married to James H. Lyons who died Sept. 12, 1891 at Frisco; that said Davis Gray died at Frisco on May 10, 1901; that Davis Gray's former wives were Dillie Gray, who died at Buxton on Nov. 11, 1881, Elizabeth Gray who died Dec. 18, 1882, and Polly Gray who died in 1888.

July 24, 1890 - Widow's Declaration for Pension: Elsie Gray, age 61, states she is the widow of Jesse N. Gray who was honorably discharged at New Bern, NC on June 26, 1865 and who died at Avon on Aug. 15, 1882; that she was married under the name of Elsie Styron on Jan. 22, 1851 (states 1852 elsewhere in pension) at Kennekeet; that she had not been previously married and has since remained a widow.
[I have Jesse dying Aug. 15, 1882 so I don't see how he could have applied for a pension in 1883. I got his death date from his widow's pension which a lot of times were in error. In 2 places she states he died Aug. 15 and in another place she says Aug. 17 but each time she said it was 1882. (kms)]

NC Infantry, to which designation changed May or June 1863. He held the rank of private and the medical records show him treated Feb. 5-10, 1863 with ulcers and Feb. 21-Mar. 7, 1863 for influenza. Oct. 29, 1901 - Letter to Commissioner of Pensions from the Navy Dept.: Oliver Gray enlisted July 29, 1843 and served as Landsman on the USS Ohio to Nov. 13, 1843 and as Landsman; As and Ordinary Seaman on the USS Cumberland to Nov. 24, 1845, when discharged.
Claim of Widow for US Pension: Mar. 26, 1903 - (Mexican War): Elizabeth J. Gray, age 65 & resident of Engelhard, states that she is the widow of Oliver N. Gray who was a Seaman on the USS Independence, commanded by Capt. Breece in the Mexican War; that he enlisted at Norfolk, Va. on July 12, 1846 and was discharged at Norfolk on May 31, 1849; that he also served in the Civil War; that after leaving the service he resided at Kennekeet for 53 years and at Engelhard for 3 years. Gray, age 52 & resident of Kennekeet, NC, states that he is 5'8" tall, has a light complexion and hair, and hazel eyes; that while on duty at Hatteras, NC in Sept. 1863 he contracted whooping cough which was followed by piles and disease of the eyes; that since leaving the service he has lived at Kennekeet and that he is a fisherman & oysterman; that he is now ¾ disabled from obtaining a living. Invalid Pension Filed: July 20, 1889 (#839.237). Nov. 26, 1889 - War Dept.: The medical records show that Robert W. Gray, Private in Co. A, 1st NC Artillery, in the post hospital at Hatteras Inlet from March 2-8, 1863 when returned to duty (influenza) and from May 8-10, 1863 when returned to duty (influenza). Mar. 15, 1906 - Affidavit of Dr. J.J. Davis: Upon examination R.W. Gray is 69 years old and weighs 175 pounds and is about 5'6". He has chronic inflammation of both eyes and his sight is so impaired that he can't see after twilight. He has chronic muscular rheumatism in both hips and lumbago in his back so that he can only walk a short distance. He has chronic piles which often bleed severely. He has a fatty enlarged heart with weak irregular action and suffers from shortness of breath. He has not been away from his village in 8 years. Mar. 17, 1908 - Affidavit of Dr. J.J. Davis: R.W. Gray's eyesight has worsened and in July 1906 he suffered a partial stroke affecting his whole left side. In Nov 1906 he suffered another stroke which left him unable to walk alone. He is now completely disabled and so helpless that he has to be attended almost like an infant. He is now 70 years old.

Scarborough states that Sanders P. Gray has been working for him off & on for the past 20 years in his shipyard and at this present time his eyesight is so bad that he cannot see pencil marks on the timber and he also complains about his back. Widow's Pension Filed: (no date given) (#640.136). Note says: "See minor cert. #461.066 I.S. Meekins Co. H, 1st NC Inf." [Sanders Gray's 2nd wife, Catherine Rebecca Hooper, had been previously married to Ignatius S. Meekins who died in 1887. In 1901 the "helpless child" (Randolph Meekins) of Ignatius and Catharine filed for his pension through his guardian. This child died on Nov. 26, 1902.]

Note: On April 8th, 1863, a squad from Hatteras including about ten men from Co. G, 5th Mass. Inf. with an equal number of Buffaloes (native and loyal North Carolinians) from from Co. H, 1st NC Union Vol. Inf., went aboard the tug "James Murray," having with them a 12-pound cannon. They proceeded over the Sound to Poplar Ridge in the Juniper Bay area of Hyde County, for a reconnoissance, and for the purpose of bringing off certain loyal families - three men, two of these recruits. One of them (recruits), Zion Hall has been in the rebel army and was wounded in Maryland last fall : he was in Jackson's army, Co. H, 33rd NC Regt. (CSA). He enlisted as a Private in Co. B, 1st NC Union Volunteers on April 10, 1863. The other recruit was James H. Emory, who enlisted as a Private in Co. B, 1st NC Union Volunteers on the same day.
