There are two parts to this section on Stuchburys and Stusksburys in Beaufort and Hyde Co., NC Deeds. The first part, just below, are abstracted deeds from copies of the originals obtained from the Register of Deeds Offices in SwanQuarter, NC (Hyde Co.) and Washington, NC (Beaufort Co.). The second part, about half way down the page, is from the Deeds Book A (1736-1762) and Deeds Book B (1762-1783) abstracted by Allen Wilkinson Hart Norris.

Bath, Beaufort Co. Deeds

Bk. 1, p. 522 - 28 Sept. 1727 : Thomas JEWEL, planter, to James STOUCHBURY, Cooper, 100 pounds for 600 acres lying on the north side of Pamptico [Pamlico] River and on the east side of Bath Town Creek, lying to the eastward of Thomas jewles house where he now lives... Robert Shrives corner... in the pocoson... to Hollands Creek... to the first station, being land first patented by Edward Moseley amd by him sold to Coll. William Reed dated Nov. 17, 1713 and by him sold to Thomas Jewel on Oct. 26, 1720, and also a patent bearing the date of May 10, 1706. /S/ Thomas Jewel, Frances Jewel; Wit: Abner (A) Adams, Jno. Bk. 2, p. 266 - 14 Dec. 1737 : James SINGLETON, planter, to John STUTCHBURY, cooper, 50 pounds for 50 acres lying on the North side of Pamptico [Pamlico] River, lying between two creeks,where Edward TRANTOR formerly lived, a place known by the name of the day hole... to the white oak swamp... to the herring run creek... to the first station, said land was granted by patent Edward TRANTER and by him conveyed to Culbert MEDFORD, who died intestate, the land then being granted to William SIGLEY, then by hin to Robert TURNER and by him to James SINGLETON and then to John STUTCHBURY. /S/ James SINGLETON; Wit: Thomas WILLIAMS, Philip SHUTE. Bk. 2, p. 286/288 - 12 Sept. 1738 : John STUCHBURY, planter, to George MIXON of Hyde Co., planter, 212 pounds, 12 shillings for 600 acres lying on the north side of Pamptico [Pamlico] River & on the east side of Bath Town Creek, land sold by Thomas Jewel to James STUCHBURY, my father. Note: In 1705, Bath County, North Carolina was created to become the second county in the colony of North Carolina. (Albemarle County, between the Albemarle Sound and the Virginia border, had become North Carolina's forst county in 1667.) In 1712, Bath County was divided into three precincts, Pamticough, which became Beaufort County, Wickham, which became Hyde County, and Archdale, which became Craven County, North Carolina. These counties lay on the north and east shores of the Pamlico Sound. In 1728/29, Beaufort, Craven and Hyde Precincts became counties unto themselves and Bath County was abolished.

Note: In the last deed above John Stuchbury has sold off most of his land in Beaufort County. He does not appear in local records again until 1755, almost seventeen years later, when he appears in the militia in Hyde County.

Note: The occupation of both James Stouchbury and his son John Stutchbury is given as "cooper", or barrel maker, and later planter.

A, p. 528 - 14 Feb. 1756 : James CLAYTON, carpenter, of *Arrowmuskeet in Hyde Co., carpenter, to John STUCKBURY of same, 10 pounds Virginia money for 100 acres on Arrowmuskeet Lake at a holly tree below John STUCHBURY's plantation, to a mulberry tree... to the first station. /S/ James CLAYTON {Seal}; Wit: J. A, p. 592 - 2 June 1757 : James CLAYTON of Arrowmuskeet in Hyde Co. to John STUCHBURY of same; 15 pounds for 100 acres lying on North side of Arrowmuskeet Lake, at a mulberry tree on lake side, the corner tree of John STUCHBURY's land whereon he now lives, with the lakeside to GIBBS line... to the first station. /S/ James CLAYTON {Seal}; Wit: Abraham JONES, Hugh HENRY.
