Hyde Co., NC Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions: February Term, 1790: Certification of Marriage of John Stokesberry and Margaret McCraith on 10 December, 1788, both of the "Ancient Kingdom of Ireland"; Signed by Benjamin Russell; Witnessed by William Rhodes, John Russell & James Rhodes.

Below I have compiled the census records for John Prior Stotesbury (with various spellings) from 1790 to 1840 and from 1850 to 1880 on the following page. I have also constructed tables for each census showing the possible dates of birth for each person. A word of caution: census takers often made mistakes.

Note: The above 1830 Hyde Co. Census gives John P. Stotesbury's age as between 80 - 90, which would make his birth somewhere between 1740-1750. I believe this is a mistake, most probably by the census taker. I think that everyone is aware that census takers, and even county clerks, made mistakes, as we all do. (jbm)

Note: Hyde Co., NC and Beaufort Co., NC are adjacent, lying on the North shore of the Pamlico Sound. In 1712 they constituted two of the three precincts of Bath County, which had been formed in 1695. From 1712 until 1819, what is now the eastern half of Beaufort Co. was then Hyde Co. This area, on the west bank of the Pungo River, is where Dr. John Prior Stokesbury / Stotesbury lived most of the time. Also, this is where he was living when he wrote his will in 1835 (probate 1847). (jbm)
