NOTE: Levi McGowan, along with his father James McGowan, and others, 
paid $74 for one acre and a house for the sole use of the South 
Mattamuskeet United Baptist Church.

NOTE: One child, Daniel W. McGowan (1868-bef.1896) died from

In 1857, Sylvester McGowan was accused of being the father 
of a bastard child by Hetty Caroline (Swindell?) Cutrell.
In 1871, Sylvester McGowan filed a claim with the Southern 
Claims Commission for damages done to his property by the Union 
Army. He received partial payment of his claim.
