Note: Once again it appears that Joseph McGowen, Jr. and his wife are living in the household of his son, James McGowen. Sons Amos, Samuel and Bryant also have their own households. By 1840, Joseph's nephew, Wiley McGowan, the son of James (c.1774-1854) & Betsy McGowan of Hyde Co., NC, has moved to White Co., TN, and settled near his uncle's family.

In 1840, James McGowen died in White County, however most of his children remained in the area. By 1850, most of the other McGowens had moved. After 1843, Amos McGowen had moved to Arkansas where he died. By 1850 his widow Louisa and their children had settled in Wright Co., Missouri. Samuel McGowan also moved by 1843 and both he and his brother Walker McGowen were living in Marion Co., Alabama by 1850. Their cousin Wiley McGowan had moved North to Saline Co., Illinois by 1857. Brother Dempsey Bryant McGowen remained in White County until after the Civil War when he started to move his family to join those already in Missouri, however they he ended up stopping and staying in Caldwell Co., Kentucky. The father, Joseph McGowen was still in White County in 1850, 81 years old. He was probably deceased shortly thereafter.
