African American Sailors
from Hyde County, N. C.
in the
United States Navy

Below are the names of the sailors from Hyde Co., NC who served in the United States Navy (USN) during the Civil War. This list was researched as a special project of the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System (CWSS) of the National Parks Service (NPS). In the CWSS database, I found 14 sailors, composed of ex-slaves and freedmen, from Hyde Co., NC who served in the U. S. Navy. In the database, I found 933 men who listed various towns and counties in North Carolina as their place of birth. However, a large number of these just listed North Carolina as their birthplace, and I'm sure a few of these were also from Hyde County. You may check the entire alphabetical list of all U. S. sailors at the CWSS link above, or on the pages I have set up on the NC-USCT web site: African Americans in the U. S. Navy from North Carolina. Your help is needed in adding any data which you may have on any of these Hyde sailors and correcting anything you find which is incorrect. Please contact me with any information you may have on these sailors, and also the ships on which they served. See also the Hyde Co., NC - 1890 Veterans and Widows Census, which includes the names of both Union and Confederate veterans.
