18 May 1804 Stephen Fletcher, shipmaster, informs the court that Jasper
LONGTOM, a base born Indian born of Jane LONGTOM, suggested
to have been begotten by a "whight" father, now of the age
of about ten years, is going at random without that control
and protection so essential to his own future good & that
of the community at large, & offers to take him by indenture
and empowers John Jordan to sign in his behalf. Fletcher
reports that in the same neighborhood unprovided with master
is Price LONGTOM, 13 or 14, and Jordan LONGTOM, 9 years,
base born sons of Polly LONGTOM, and a black father.
Fletcher will not take them but prays they may be provided
with masters - & that of the name of John Thornton, 16 or
17, Solomon, 14 or 15, & another subject to Rheumatizm.
At the bottom of the same document Little John Pugh, ship-
master, offers to take Jordan LONGTOM, a base born boy, 9 or
10, the son of Polly, alias Mary, LONGTOM, an Indian woman,
also Jordan, also begotten by a negro. He empowers James
Watson in his behalf to sign such indentures.
On the reverse of the document "Ordered that Jasper
LONGTOM be bound to Captain Stephen Fletcher to be taught to
read and right, cipher and the art of a seaman and mariner
and that Jordan LONGTOM be bound in like manner to Captain
              Little John Pugh.
