SURNAME: WINBORN(E); WINBURN(E); WENBON
Period of Interest (year): 1600 - 1900
Comments:
I am searching for elusive Winborne ancestors and relatives who are thought to have migrated between Virginia and North Carolina. (1) Can anyone tell me the history of Winborne Mills in Southampton County, VA? (2) I would like any information about Winbornes (including any variant spellings of the name)who may have lived in Southampton or Hertford County at any time prior to 1900. (3) I have heard that there may be a native-american connection. Can anyone confirm this? (4) I have also found Winbornes who were listed as "free persons of color" in the 1790 census for North Carolina. Does anyone know what happened to these families? (5) If anyone has a Winborne family Bible that lists the names Samuel, Carey, Javan, Jacob, Frank, and Fannie (all born in the mid 1800s), among others, I would very much like a copy of the records to help in identifying and tracing my ancestors and will pay any expenses involved in photocopying and mailing this information to me.

Perry and Ely were the sons of Josiah Carter (ca. 1774/75-before 1830) and grandsons of Isaac Carter II (ca. 1745-1805/10). These Bibles are mentioned by Mrs. Agnes Carolyn Foster Marbourg in her book, "Carter Family of North Carolina" (1914). She was the daughter Charles H. Foster and Susan Agnes Carter (1834-1902), daughter of the aforementioned Perry Carter and Priscilla Warren of Southampton. From one of these sources is a reference to the marriage of a James Carter to a Dollie Cotton.

SURNAME: GATLING
Period of Interest (year): 1790-1820
Comments:
Hello - This message is in regard to the research I am doing on my GATLING family in Hertford County --- or lack of research you might say.
It appears unless I am mistaken that you folks had a couple of courthouse fires which destroyed most of the records prior to 1865 - which presents a problem on doing research ca 1790-1820.
My g-g-grandfather - Briggs Gatling was born in Hertford County, NC in 1818. He stated during a Goodspeed History interview that he was the son of William Gatling - a "lifelong resident" of Hertford County.
I believe that William Gatling was either a brother or first cousin of Jordan Gating whos son, Richard Jordan Gatling, was the inventor of the gun that bears his name. I have a letter Richard Jordan Gatling wrote to an uncle where he begins the letter "My dear cousin" but unable to tie the familes togather.
Thal all said, my reason for writing is that I appear to be at a dead end and would entertain the idea of hiring a genealogist in the Herford County area who might take a fresh look at what little I have and dig into any remaining records.
I only wish to learn the relationship between Jordan Gatling and Wiliam Gatling --- once that is found, I can begin fresh with my research.
Would you or someone you know be willing to take on the challange? If so, if you could E-Mail me with fees and costs, I will respond accordingly.
My earlier surname posting has no yielded any favorable results and I rarely look to others to work on my family, prefering instead the challange it offers but this family really has me stumped.
Thank you for your time and look forward to hearing from you soon.

I'm interested in finding of information on the brothers and sisters as well as the parents of Rev. Lemuel Washington Boon(e) 1827-1879. Rev. Boon(e) referred to as a black Baptist minister was born in Northhampton County a free person of color. I believe his father was Lemuel and mother Martha also appear to be free persons of color. It also appears to have had six brothers and sisters, one whose name appears to be Shadrack. He sold property to a Walden in Hertford County in 1866, however there is no indication how he obtained this land. Because of his political, and religious activism Rev. Boon(e) lived in different sections of Northeastern NC. He is listed in the Northhampton County census in the 1850 as an apprentice bricklayer. In 1866 sale documents to Walden it states he hails from Pasquotank County although there is no other record of his having lived in Pasquotank. And he is listed in the Gates County census in 1870, married father of 13. Please advise if you know of any old newspaper, land transactions, personal letters or any documentation related to Rev. Boon(e)or his brothers, sisters or parents.
