National Allison
Family Reunion 2005

The 2005 National Allison Family Reunion was proof of something quite amazing.

The National Allison-Allanson Family Association has accomplished that which few organizations ever accomplish. We have bridged the Generation Gap!

We have bridged it flawlessly and seamlessly, with an ease to which not even the government can aspire. We can all be very proud of our accomplishments.

The 2005 National Allison Reunion was an event which encompassed both parents and grandparents, children and grandchildren, all were pleased and entertained. The reunion will be in good hands when all of us are among the elders around the campfire of memories.

The morning portion of the reunion was a dignified tribute to the respectful admiration which we hold for the ancestors. We honored their lives and their contributions to our collective lives as a family. We honored those who came before us with our presence, with flowers, and with the music of our, and their, heritage.

The evening portion of the reunion was a celebration of the spirit the ancestors gave us. We danced, laughed, drank a toast to Queen and homeland, and felt the warmth that only kinship brings.

We ate fantastic food underneath the starry heavens as the shades of the ancestors walked among us, smiling in approval.

This grandmother has grandchildren who beg, between reunions, to go to the "big party." This year those grandchildren were in grandchild heaven. A bouncy house, games and puzzles, chocolate chip cookies, and most wonderous of all, Christmas lights in a Port-a-John!

Those grandchildren asked "Grandmother, are all these people our fambly?" When told, "Yes, everybody here is your family," they ran around hugging everyone. So.......if you got a hug from a little girl you didn't know, that was just one of my granddaughters celebrating her "fambly" with the joy that only lives in the innocence of children.

Don and Sandi Brown's Hawg Wild Barbeque is the absolute best barbeque in the South where barbeque is always good. I would be proud to take company to eat at their establishment on any Sunday.

The wine, and the homemade meade of our English heritage, was excellent, the music was fantastic, the company was awesome.

Pyramid Brass is as good as any brass ensemble anywhere.

The Pisgah Pilgrims vividly remind us of those misty-coloured Sunday evenings on the front porches of our childhoods.

The Dowden Sisters do an exceptional job of keeping our heritage alive through the songs and story-ballads of our ancestors.

The Drover's Old Time Medicine Show is a favorite of mine. They speak to the part of our being which will always be ready for a party, a hearty laugh, and good friendship.

Monica Deaver-Noland and Martha Melton are ours by blood. Their beautiful voices represent us well, touching the best in all of us.

Southern Mountain Fire was perfect as always

My family is looking forward to seeing all of you next fall.

On Saturday, October 18, 2003, many of the descendants of Hezikiah and Joshua Allison of Haywood County joined with hundreds of other descendants of Thomas and Mary Roberts Allanson (Allison) of London, England and Charles County, Maryland to celebrate 345 years in America at the National Allison Family Reunion in Brevard, NC. Attendees came from 40 states and the British Empire.

Among the special guests of the reunion were Her Majesty's Consul General Micheal Bates, who spoke of the special bonds between the Allison family and the British people.

Her Majesty's Deputy Consul General Steven Collier, accompanied by pipe and drum, presented a memorial wreath to honor the Allison ancestors.

The Honorable Joe Sam Queen of Waynesville, State Senator and Allison descendant, presented the Allison family with a state flag and proclamation of appreciation from the state of NC and spoke of his WNC heritage.

The Honorable Mr. Queen and Janice Allison Jones, wife of former Cherokee Chief Leon Jones, treated the family to an excellent exhibition of mountain clogging.

Brevard Mayor Jimmy Harris and Brevard College President Dr. Drew Van Horn spoke on the contributions of the Allison family in making WNC what it is today.

A memorial in song was presented by noted Haywood County vocalist and Allison descendant Monica Deaver-Noland. She was accompanied on guitar by Roy Chapman, local bluegrass legend.

Mr. Micheal Allison, president of the 600 member National Allison (Allanson) Family Association gave a presentation on the Allison family history and heritage. Mr. Allison was honored last year by being asked to present the toast to Queen Elizabeth at Her Majesty's birthday party.

Ms. Diane Guest read a list of tributes and memorials to past and present family members. An auction followed with many heritage items being presented for bidding.

Following the formal program and luncheon, the family reconvened for an old-time mountain hoedown, complete with dancing and a pig-pickin' supper. Southern Mountain Fire Cloggers presented an awesome exhibition and many Allison family members showed off their dancing skills.

Providing music for the events were Hogtown Squealers Old-Time Band, R.J. and Cindy Grady on pipe and drum, The Buckinghams, and Roy Chapman and True Blue Grass.

Since the beginning of the 1800's, the Allison family has been instrumental in the building of Western North Carolina. On the 3rd Saturday of each October this proud old family celebrates the heritage begun 345 years ago by 19 year old Thomas Allanson of London and his 13 year old wife Mary Roberts Allanson in a raw new world which became our beloved home.

We look forward to seeing all of you next year, on the 3rd Saturday in October, in the most beautiful place on earth--the WNC mountains.
