Bettye and I enjoyed visiting with you on our last trip to Moore County. The cemetery project
that we started last November is finally finished and a copy of the survey of the Cameron, NC Cemetery
accompanies this letter. Please add this to the genealogy collections of the library. It was prepared
with the hope that it might help preserve a record of all identifiable burials in the cemetery and to aid
others searching for information about family members and loved ones buried there. More importantly, It
is hoped that in some small way it will help to preserve and honor the memory of those who have gone before
and who played their part in the rich heritage of the Town of Cameron. Thanks so much for your help in
gathering the material for this project.
My uncle, the Rev. Ernest Jones Arnold, treasures our family's Cameron heritage and has long sought to
have such a record as this made for the community. This printed survey comes as a result, in part, of his
efforts, encouragement and support. His first call following graduation from Yale University Seminary was
to serve as stated supply for the Union and Cameron Presbyterian Churches during the summer of 1939.

The Cameron Cemetery is adjacent to the Cameron Presbyterian Church
on north Carthage Street, Cameron, NC. Established by the McKeithen family, it
has served as the primary burial ground of the community since shortly after the
town of Cameron was chartered in 1877 and the Presbyterian Church was formed
in 1879. The earliest dated marker is for a Williams child buried in 1878. There is
a marker for John Alexander Graham that indicates his date of death as occurring
in 1868. Possibly, he was re-interred at a later date beside his daughter's grave.
The cemetery is of considerable interest in that it has served the several
churches of the community and the interrelated and extended families of the town
and area for over 130 years. Graves of the town's founders and officials, its ministers,
physicians, educators, farmers, merchants and townsfolk are nestled in family
plots under the shade of majestic pines, cedars, gums and magnolias.
Lifestyles and living conditions changed greatly over those years. While plots
in the newer sections have been laid out to accommodate two to eight graves, those
in the older sections were laid out much larger to serve the needs of the large families
that were common in the early days of Cameron. Many of those plots hold graves
of numerous infants and youths lost to common diseases or illness. The Arnold family
plot is a typical example. When Neill T. and Mary Monroe Arnold lost the first of their
nine children in 1890 - year-old Malcolm - they established a family plot. Their
choice indicated expectations of a large future family. The plot measured 19 feet
by 58 feet and could easily hold forty or more graves. Other older family plots are
similar in size.
Many of the early families associated with Cameron came at it's founding from
outlying areas of Moore and Harnett counties. A number were related or became
related through marriages over the years. Quite a few families selected cemetery
plots close by their kins-people. This is easilyl noted in the older sections Two,
Three and Four. The Arnolds', McDougalds' (McDugalds'), Borsts', Tallys', and
McNeills' neighboring plots are a typical example. Many more such relationships
exist than are recorded in this survey. It would be an interesting project to develop
a record of relationships and histories of the long-time families of the community.
The following inventory of grave markers was compiled in November, 2007
and updated as of May 15, 2008. Full names, dates and family relations were
supplemented from local and family histories, Social Security Death Index and
information provided by families. A number of monuments have the names and birth
dates of spouses who are still living. These, too, have been recorded in this listing.
For location purposes, the cemetery survey has been recorded into six sections.
Section One is the designation for the section nearest Carthage Street and
beginning west of the North-South Driveway near the Presbyterian Church's
educational building. Rows are numbered from east to west and all rows of graves
and family plots are recorded from south to north. Ten rows are identified for
Section One although there are no graves on Row 1 and Row 2. Some family
plots include graves on two or more rows and are recorded on the appropriate row.
Section One extends northward to a point where the number of rows widens
to sixteen and a wooden fence perpendicular to the north-south drive separates
the cemetery from the back yard of the McNeill house that faces Carthage Street.
Section One plots are uniformly 14 ft wide (east to west) while those in Section
Two and Three vary in width. Therefore numbered rows of Section One, Two and
Three do not meet evenly where the sections connect. There is no border between
Sections One and Two.
Section Two begins at the north end of section one and extends northward to the
intersection of the South (east-west) Drive and the Main Driveway .
The starting point for Row One is adjacent the Main Driveway.
Section Three lies between the two east-west drives. Section Two and
Three contain the oldest graves of the cemetery. Graves of Section One are
more recent ones for the most part.
Section Four is a newer section northwest of the intersection of the Main
Driveway and the North (east-west) Drive. Plots in this section have been
surveyed and numbered as have those in newer sections Five and Six.
Section Five designates the newer graves lying east of the Main Driveway and
behind the church educational building. It extends to the intersection with the
North (east-west) Drive.
Section Six is the newest section opened and is northeast of the intersection. It
presently contains only three grave markers.
