MY INTEREST IN GUILFORD COUNTY

I volunteered to be CC because the Guilford site was an orphan at the time, and I wanted to see if I could build it into a good resource for those trying to research their Guilford roots from near or far.  It's an ongoing process, and I do greatly appreciate the positive comments I often receive from others.  That makes all the time and effort worthwhile.

I live in North Carolina, but I do not live in Guilford County.  However, my grandfather and many of my relatives grew up there, and a number of them still live there.  I visit the county several times a year to see relatives and do more research.  My Scots-Irish ancestors arrived in the Guilford area before the county itself was created, with the earliest known record of my father's line coming from the Rowan County 1768 tax list.  That means I have over 240 years of roots in the area.

My husband's father grew up in Guilford County, where his Quaker ancestor's family moved in the late 1770's.  His branch of the family stayed in the area, and therefore he has a long list of Guilford names in his family tree as well.  Guilford seems to be the only county in NC where I do not have to spell out or pronounce the surname Benbow!

The combined list of our Guilford surnames include Anderson, Benbow, Cobb/Kopp, Denny, Devault, Dick (Scots-Irish), Dicks/Dix (Quaker), Donnell, Forbis, Fries, Hall, Heath, Hendricks, Hoffman, Long, McAdoo, McKee, McLean, Moore, Paine, Paisley, Sanders, Scott, Stanley, Walker, Wilson, Woollen, and Wright.  Also, we both have roots in neighboring counties, including the counties of Rowan, Orange, Randolph, and Cabarrus.  I have deep Virginia roots on my mother's side, going back to Jamestown, and we both have old New England roots as well, with Mayflower ancestors on both sides.  My husband has a line that traces back to New Amsterdam in New York.  I have a deep love of history, and it becomes even more enjoyable to me when I work on family genealogy.

As the historian for the Benbow family, I maintain a website to which I am adding family information gradually as I select what I want to make available.  That website contains information on the Benbow family and some allied families as well, and it will contain more information in the future as I choose family groups and media to add to the site.  Obviously, that website contains a number of Guilford ancestors.  Take a look at it, if you're interested:

As the county coordinator for Guilford, I am responsible for the maintenance of the website itself, but I do not provide -- in my function as county coordinator -- free look-ups or assistance with research.  You can consult our look-ups page for that service.
