Wish to correspond with anyone researching James L. UPTON (1790-1870), who married Lydia (Liddy) MURRAY 25 Mar 1813 in Orange Co., NC. [uncertain if these are in the part of Orange that became Guilford].   Mary L. Deyle, R. R. 1, Box 48, Princeton, IN 47670

DICKS/HINSHAW/WHITE
William R.DICKS b.1830 NC, married Il, Elizabeth Eunice WHITE, 1856 d. Adams Co. Ia. 1901. According to census records his parents were also born NC. I do not have the names of his parents or siblings( if any). The first names of some of his 10 children also appear to be named after members of his family. The DICKS surname is very common in Guilford Co. NC in HINSHAW and other records of ca. 1800-1840. I can not document directly his relationship to his parents. (Surname is also in Randolph and Orange Co. NC) I need to make a connection to this family in Guilford Co.   Sam Dicks Mar 1998

DUFF
Searching for more information on ABRAM DUFF, whose will was dated 06MAR1781 in Guilford Co., NC. He lists a wife named Mary, his father SAMUEL, and brothers JAMES, WILLIAM, SAMUEL, JOHN and ROBERT. Does anyone know more about his father, Samuel? Are all of these Duffs from the same DUFF family as in Washington Co., VA? This will of Abram DUFF also has been listed as being in Rowan Co., NC to the best of my knowledge.

McDOWELL
Joseph McDOWELL, of Guilford Co., Salisbury Dist., NC is listed on the 1790 census with 1 free white male over 16 (himself); 2 free white males under age 16; and 3 free white females. Joseph died in 1797. He was married twice, but names are not known. His will, dated 3APR1797, mentions his wife, but not by name, to whom he leaves her bed and bed chest, wearing clothes, one-third of the land and one-half of the "mantian house" with his daughter Mary, and wearing apparel and Bible. Issue:
1. MARY McDOWELL
2. JOSEPH McDOWELL,JR. - married MARTHA WHITE
3. ELIZABETH McDOWELL - married ? DUFF
4. HANNAH McDOWELL - married ELIJAH FERGUSON in Washington Co., VA, 24SEP1789.
5. JAMES McDOWELL - half-brother to Joseph
6. JOHN McDOWELL - deceased in 1797.
In order to separate the identity of this Joseph McDowell from the more well known Joseph McDowell of western NC, this Joseph has been referred to as "The Lost Joseph." In records from the Buffalo Presbyterian Church of Guilford Co., NC, it indicates that this Joseph McDowell came to Guilford Co., NC from PA in 1774. Can anyone help me identify more information on this Joseph, Sr. and also, can anyone tell me the first name of the DUFF who married Elizabeth McDowell? This has been a real road block for us and would appreciate any information which anyone could provide! Thank you!

He is buried next ot his mother Hanna BELTON KELLY (1737-1820). His father Samuel KELLY Sr. who settled in the Bush River area in 1762. John's wife was named Hannah according to the book "Quaker Families of SC and Georgia" but I can not find their marriage in Bush River records by Hinshaw. On 6/24/1809, New Garden monthly meeting (Guilford Co.,NC), John and Hanna KELLY of Bush River, SC were received in membership on minutes from New Garden Quarterly Meeting. Were they relocating from Bush River SC to New Garden, NC? In John KELLY Sr's LW&T, 11/25/1816 he left his whole estate to his mother Hanna to distribute as she saw fit. He appointed his nephew, John B. ONEALL and friend John Oneall Executors. John KELLY mentioned no spouse or children. In Hannah KELLY's LW&T, 11/22/1817 she mentions no children of deceased son John KELLY Sr. In the book "Newberry Co, SC" by George Summer Sr., he mentions in connection with Hannah Kelly's will: "children of a deceased son, John KELLY". Can anyone out there shed some light on whether or not John and Hannah KELLY had children? Raymond A. Kelly Jr.   Oct 1998

RICHARDSON
John (nmn) RICHARDSON, my great grandfather, was born near Hillsboro, Orange Co. NC 27May1819. The RICHARDSON family was reportedly in the stagecoach business. The only record I have of John in NC comes from the minutes of the Eagle Lodge in Hillsboro. He joined the Masons 5 Dec1842 and was " initiated an Entered Apprentice (as it was a case of an emergency) ". On 10 Dec1842 he " petitioned to be passed to the degree of Fellow Craft ". This was passed. A lodge of Master Masons was then opened and he petitioned to be raised to Master Mason. This too was passed. He became a Master Mason in two meetings five days apart. He did not attend any more meetings until 10 April 1843 at which time he stated he was " going to the Western Country and wanted a certificate showing he was an honourable and Regular member of the lodge ". On motion it was unanimously granted to him. He went to Jonesboro, TN and worked for the firm of John H. BLAIR,a stagecoach line. On 4 July 1846, John married Elizabeth Susannah ELLIS of Church Hill, TN. Hawkins County. Their first home was in Russellville, Jefferson County TN. Elizabeth's father, John E. ELLIS, had operated a stage stopover in Church Hill and was a successful land owner. I have some information on John and Elizabeth and on the ELLIS family. I have fully documented John and Elizabeth's children. Around 1851 John and Elizabeth moved to the ELLIS homeplace in Church Hill. They bought out many of Elizabeth's siblings and accumulated several hundred acres. Elizabeth died 6 June 1899 and John 22 Mar 1909. They gave land in Church Hill for an Academy also to be used as a Masonic Hall. John continued as a Mason and was said to Tennessee's oldest when he died. John and Elizabeth could read and write. All four adult children were well educated for the times . All were land owners and successful. Their grandchildren included lawyer, missionary, naval officer and successful business men. This family of RICHARDSONS are reputed to be descendents of Patrick HENRY and to maintain an awareness of the relationship every generation has had a son named Henry. My problem is I have been unable to find even the given names of John's parents. The 1900 census gives his father's birthplace as Maryland and his mother's as NC. I feel John had considerable influence within the Eagle Lodge. I searched the minutes from before his birth and did not find a RICHARDSON. ( I am aware of the various spellings ) Names of those in attendance for all three meetings which John attended are: James M. PALMER, C. S. COOLEY, H. BOSHAMER, John COOLEY, R. F. PLEASANTS, Pride JONES, Allen PARKS, R. H. LEE, James PARKS. Those signing his dement, beside some above, were; John BERRY and W. W. BROWN. We have the original. I feel John must have been related to some person listed. I would make a nice contribution to any society or person who could give me an answer. Thomas EDWARDS, lived in Guilford Co. and their son appears to have been the Joseph EDWARDS, b. ca 1806 who married Polly (perhaps PETTIFORD) and lived in Guilford Co. I have much information on this line and would like to share it with descendants.

Seeking information on my ancestors in Guilford Co., NC. Paris Chipman got land there by 1784. It appears that he had sons John M. Chipman and Paris Chipman, Jr. John Chipman (his will written 21 Jan 1830, probated Feb 1835) and his wife Molly had children including a son Stephen M. Chipman who was married to Martha (perhaps Gray). Stephen M. Chipman died in the 1840s and his land was sold and estate settled about 1855. His wife Martha and their children Harriet J. Chipman, John G. Chipman, Andrew G. Chipman, and Mary L. Chipman moved to Independence Co., Arkansas by 1855. I am a descendant through Harriet J. Chipman who married Israel Folsom Dawson who was born in Sampson Co., NC, but who also moved to Arkansas in the 1850s. The early Chipman family members were Quakers and four of them are buried at the Deep River Friends Cemetery. I would like to share and receive information on this family.     David E. A third cousin of mine and myself may be the authories on the Winchester family of Guilford Co and Rockingham Co, NC Thomas Winchester deeded an acre of land from his south east corner of his 200 acre farm to the Haw River Regular Baptist in 1784. YEATS/YATES/TAPP
I am looking for information on Jethro YEATS, son of William YEATS/YATES and Mary TAPP. Jethro was born abt. 1775/76, and evidently lived most of his life in either Wake Co, or Guilford Co. NC. He was supposedly appointed guardian of his brother's children in Guilford Co. He moved to Middle Tn. in 1834, and was killed in a gunpowder explosion in Oct 1851. Would appreciate any information on this subject, since he was my ggg grandfather.    Gail Yates  Feb 1998
