Vandals dismantled Walker Cemetery in Greene County last weekend. The family cemetery sits off Viking Mountain Lane in the Upper Paint Creek community. Authorities are looking for the criminals who turned over more than 25 tombstones.

The site needs $1,500 in repairs, which will have to be paid for by the families of the deceased. Joe Chandler of Greene County said he is angry about the vandalism.

"It's what this country is coming to when they can desecrate a cemetery, flag or whatever," Chandler said. Chandler's parents, brother, aunts, uncles and grandparents are buried at the site.

The Greene County Sheriff's Department believes the vandalism may have been committed by two or three people. Investigators do not have any leads. If caught, the suspects would be charged with felony vandalism. Family member Teirsa Alonso says that it is going to take hard work to fix the cemetery.

"It looks like a lot of 'put your back into it' is what it's going to take," Alonso said. Although the act was disturbing, Alonso added that the vandalism would bring the family closer together.

The Greene County Sheriff's Department asks the community to call with any information about the crime at (423) 639-2613
