GASTON COUNTY, NC - CEMETERIES - Wells Cemetery Wells Cemetery, corner of Catawba Street and Linestowe Road, Belmont, Gaston County, North Carolina This cemetery is in fair to poor condition. Some stones are broken and deteriorating, and it appears that it is cleaned irregularly. On a previous visit by the surveyor (in 2000) the cemetery was fully overgrown. On the date of the survey, the weeds were a foot or more high with a lot of residue from the most recent cleaning (probably cleaned with the use of a weedeater). The cemetery is surrounded by a rock and cement wall and has an iron gate facing Linestowe Road. The gravestones face east. I started at the back of the cemetery and worked toward the gate. It is quite probable that there are more graves here than I could identify. Others likely here are Susannah Featherstone, wife of Burrell Wells, and Willie Wells, wife of Featherstone Wells. Surveyed by Philip Underwood-Sheppard with assistance from Timothy Alan Sheppard on April 9, 2001. Information between [ ] supplied by the surveyor. All other information was found on the gravestones. Ancestors of the surveyor: Solomon and Fannie A. Wells Fite, Featherstone Wells, and Burrell Wells. The John Smith buried here was a natural uncle of the surveyor, and John's wife, Susan Fite Smith, was a natural aunt, their children being double cousins of the surveyor.
