Info on Adam Springs: The land surrounding modern McAdenville used to be owned by James Henderson in the 1800's the land was purchased by Adam Springs. Adam Alexander Springs belonged to a long line of Springsteens who came from Holland and would be known as Springsteens until John Springs, Jr. (1717-????) dropped the Steen some time during his lifetime. Thirteen years before George Washington became President and the same year that the Declaration of independence was signed Adam Alexander Springs was born in the dead of winter in the Providence town ship of Mecklenburg county on Jan. 9 1776. Son of John Springs and Sarah Alexander Springs he and his siblings were 7 generation out of Holland. When he lay dying in 1840 supposedly, two of his servents, Uncle Moses and Aunt Margret, wanted to get the preacher; to which Adam replied - hang the preacher and burry me standing up with my musket in my hand so I can guard my fish traps against thieves and vandals. And they did. In the center of the rocks is the grave of Adam and his best friend. On the outside of the square are aproxmately 7 to 8 more unmarked graves. It has been said that Adam wore the garb of the Quakers. This land was later purchased by the McAdens in 1880. Adam Springs graduated with honors, in the 1st graduating class of the University of North Carolina July 10, 1798 at the age of 22. ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
