Runaway Slaves Advertisement

The following ad was found on the back of an old newspaper clipping; the newspaper's name is not identified, but the article is clearly Franklin County.

$70 Reward
 

    "Ran off from the subscriber on the 28th ult. (September 28, 1854) three negroes, to wit:   Edgar, Willis, and Caroline.   Edgar, aged 38 years; Willis, aged 19 years and well grown, with very pleasing countenance when spoken to.   I will give twenty-five dollars apiece for the catching and delivery of Edgar or Willis, if caught within the State, out of the State fifty dollars apiece.   I will also give twenty dollars for the catching and delivery of Caroline, if caught within the State, out of the State forty dollars.    If said negroes are caught out of the State to be confined in jail so that I get them again, if in the State, they are to be delivered to J. J. Ward, near Franklinton, or to Hugh Hays, Haysville ---- Said negro or negroes to be  .................."
