For twelve years he was engaged in teaching school. He was a member of the Educational Board of Franklin County, secretary of the Franklin County Sunday School Convention, and a Justice of the Peace. In 1879 he professed hope in Christ and joined the Baptist Church of Louisburg, NC. His examples were good, his life commendable. He bore his sickness with the fidelity of a Christian. His funeral was preached by Rev. R. I. Walden, D.D. at the residence of his brother, Mr. J. Perry, where he died. Dr. Walden selected for his text 1 Th. ss. 4th chapter, 14th to 18th verses. Miss Roberta E. Davis presided at the organ and the congregation san "Safe in the Arms of Jesus."
