Samuel and Sarah (Newyen) Merritt are my 5th great grandparents. I have them married 3 Feb 1792 in Orange County, NC. My question is about Sarah’s name. I cannot find the name Newyen anywhere else in the USA. Could her name have been misspelled or an error been made in transcription. Would love to track down her family.

Alan Powell

“Greetings:

I am trying track the movement of my wife’s ancestor, Thomas CAMP.  According to family lore, he moved to the Orange County/Durham area around 1765 and possibly operated a mill in the area.  He and his large family migrated to Tryon County in 1775-1776 shortly after the conflicts in Alamance.    There are conflicting reports that he was a Loyalist and a Whig with neither giving any reliable confirmatory support.   I am trying to find information that positively places his family in Orange County and anything that might give answer to “”why”” he moved on to Tryon County.  Any suggestions of help would be greatly appreciated,

Alan”

I am helping a Prospective Member of DAR trace her lineage to John GEDDES/GATTIS/GADDUS  who moved from PA to Orange County, NC with the Presbyterian Group.  He received a land grant.  I found his will which names her ancestor, Isaac GATTIS, who moved to Lincoln Co., TN.  I also found a John GADDUS from Hillsborough, Orange County, who was appointed as a juror in Feb., 1777.  Is there a list of person’s who signed oaths of allegiance to the provisional government that was set up in 1777, and was John GADDUS on that list?  I am hoping he is the same John GEDDES, as I found that the name spelling was later changed to GATTIS. If an oath can be found, how can I receive a copy?
