I am trying to find any information on the parents of my fourth great grandfather, Walter MCGEE (born approx 1802 in Orange County, NC). His father’s name is George MCGEE (1786-1819). I have seen many references to his mother being named Beersheba/Bathseba/Baresheba.

“Archibald REAVES/REEVE appears in the 1800 Orange Co, Hillsborough District, NC census age 16-25. In 1801 he bought Lot 14 in Chapel Hill from James Mitchell. In 1809 he married Elizabeth CALDWELL there in Orange Co. I believe her to be the daughter of John and Martha Gaddis CALDWELL. In 1813, REAVES sold Lot 14 to Edmund Pitt and by 1816 he and family are in Bedford Co., TN where he died in 1839.
I am looking for his parents and siblings; would appreciate any help/clues as to finding them.
Thanks”

“I am hoping for any information or tips on directions for me to learn about my family, the Longs of New Hope Creek. William LONG had the original land grant on 100 acres in the 1740′s. Would like to get a specific location on the location of this property. I’ve driven the area and couldn’t be sure where the old house is. Also, my great grandfather August White LONG wrote the book “”Sons of Carolina”" in the early 1900′s. Would appreciate any and all input. Please email Suzanne at Suzanne@bluemoon-ventures.com
Thank you!”

“Problem: Wife of Elisha MASHBURN
Elisha MASHBURN appears on the 1790 Orange County Tax Rolls. His wife is unknown but his oldest son was John Harvey MASHBURN. Since his second son was named for Elisha’s father, James, it appears that the family is following the southern upland naming convention (they did so in the next generation for sure). If so, then John Harvey MASHBURN would have been named after his mother’s father. Interestingly, there is a John HARVEY listed on the 1790 Orange County Tax Rolls. Can anyone help me prove or disprove this assertion?
[BTW, Elisha and his father James later moved to Burke County, to join other family members. The MASHBURN family is very well researched and I am familiar with everything currently on the Internet about them.]”

I am developing a 39 acre site on east side of US 15-501 nearly opposite Cole Drive. We believe there may be a cemetery on site ( parcel #9776-89-7469) with several unmarked graves and with no history we are aware of. My SUP with Chapel Hill requires I fence the area to avoid future encroachment. Can you tell me if a cemetery is registered for this property and what suggestions you may have.

“You may not be able to help me, but you may know who can. The very first steward at the college at Chapel Hill was John TAYLOR, b. 1744. His cooking was so poor, he only lasted 3 years. He spent some 20 years as Clerk of the Court at Wake County. Although he was born and died in that area, I have been unable to locate his parents. Does anyone know who they were or how I can find them? Thanks so much for your time and any assistance you can render.
Sincerely,
Joan Taylor”

“While browsing the NCDOGS List mailing list archives, I found a November 2009 conversation about old maps in Orange County, NC, found by Jim Richmond.
http://newsfeed.rootsweb.com/th/read/NCDOGS/2009-11/1258203924
Have any of these maps been posted online to anyone’s knowledge? Sounds like they would be very useful. Would it be practical to take a picture of these maps or are they too large or would it be copyright infringement? I was unable to find any very old maps of Orange County on the http://www.lib.unc.edu/dc/ncmaps website that was mentioned. ”
