John Allen & Phoebe O'Neal Midgett, Sr.

John Allen Midgett, Sr., son of David O. Midgett, Sr. & Colinda Ann Sabrina Payne, was born on October 22, 1853 at Chicamacomico (present day Rodanthe) and died in Avon on March 13, 1923.  He married Phoebe M. O'Neal in Chicamacomico on May 18, 1873.  Phoebe was the daughter of Rinaldo Midgett O'Neal & Elizabeth J. MidgettPhoebe was born May 27, 1856 and died on April 27, 1935.  [see his will hereJohn & Phoebe are both buried in the Manteo Cemetery.  John's obituary appeared in The Independent on Friday, March 16, 1923 which read:

WELL KNOWN SEAMAN GOES OVER THE BAR - One of the most interesting men of the North Carolina coast passed away Monday afternoon in the death of Capt. John A. Midgett, Sr. at his home in Rodanthe, Dare County. Capt. Midgett was well known thruout eastern North Carolina where he had sailed vessels for many years. He was formerly keeper of New Inlet Coast Guard Station in the days when the life of a coast guard was a tough one. Capt. Midgett was 68 years old and leaves a wife and three children. [This is an error--all six of his children were living at the time of his death.]  They are Capt. John Allen Midgett, Jr. of international coast guard fame, C.E Midgett of Rodanthe and Mrs. N.E. Gould of Manteo.

John & Phoebe had 6 children:
   1) Rowena V. Midgett (1874-1954) married Homer Wood Midgett
   2) John Allen Midgett, Jr. (1876-1938) married Jazania Spencer Payne [see his pictures & info here]
   3) Cornelius Payne Midgett (1879-1960) married Daisy Harrison
   4) Eliza Ryan Midgett (1881-1959) married Capt. Nathaniel Etheridge Gould
   5) Lavina B. Midgett (1884-1965) married William James Franklin Meekins
   6) Lurania O'Neal Midgett (1890-1979) married George Washington Midgett
