Diary of Fannie W. Midgett

Fannie W. Midgett was born to Richard W. and Elnora C. "Nolia" (Barnett) Midgett on June 4, 1897 and died of tuberculosis in Black Mountain, Buncombe Co., NC on Nov. 19, 1925.  Fannie is buried in the Midgett Cemetery in Buxton, NC.  She was admitted to Cragmont Sanatorium in 1921.  She kept a diary from Jan. 1, 1921 to June 13, 1921.  She is shown above with an unidentified friend.

This studio portrait of Fannie, according to family tradition, was taken in Norfolk.

Cragmont, originally known as Harrison Mountain Air Sanatorium Company and established in 1906 by Dr. I.J. Archer, was a tuberculosis institution located in the Swannanoa Valley near the crest of the Blue Ridge Mountains at an elevation of 2500 feet.  The grounds included a park of 450 acres.  The sanatorium had its own farm that produced milk, beef, vegetables, and apples. Dr. Archer's primary treatment for TB was plenty of good food, fresh air, sunshine, and rest.
The diary below was kept by Fanny W. Midgett when she was being treated for tuberculosis in this sanatorium.

Richard W. & Elnora (Barnett) Midgett home in Buxton

Comments by Ann Ianuario --
When my grandmother (Mary Ruth Midgett) was a teenager her sister Fannie contracted TB.  Her mother, Elnora sold her house in Buxton and moved with her girls to Black Mountain, NC (Capt. Edward Manning, Elnora's 2nd husband, was dead). They joined a little colony of Outer Banks TB "exiles".
When the 1920 Buncombe Co. census was taken in January [see below], Elnora and her 2 daughters, Fannie & Mary, were boarders in the home of George Fulcher, a widowed merchant who was originally from Ocracoke, NC.

Fulcher, George 48

widower

Gen. Mdse. merchant
Fulcher, Seymour 20 son/single Gen. Mdse salesman
Manning, Elnora 51 boarder/widow
Miggett, Fannie 22 boarder/single
Miggett, Mary 18 boarder/single attended school

I have found a deed showing Elnora purchased property in Black Mountain sometime in 1920. It was in Black Mountain that Mary Ruth met Reese Brewer, who was from Atlanta, Ga. He too was a TB patient. My grandparents met in the parlor of Cragmont Sanatorium. Mary was playing the piano and Reese walked over and began to sing the song she was playing.
On April 1, 1921 Elnora's mother, Mary Louise (Fulcher) Barnett also came to Black Mountain. She died there June 12, 1922.  I don't know if she was there for that whole year.
Mary and Reese married in Black Mountain on May 11, 1921. Their first child, Frances, was born August 9, 1922.  She died in 1978.  Their second child, Jimmie (my father), was born July 15, 1925.  He is currently recovering from open heart surgery.
Shortly after Fannie died in 1925, Reese moved his family to Atlanta, where he died of TB in March, 1928. He was 32 years old. (birthdate Nov. 10, 1895) Mary remained in Atlanta where Reese's father and brothers assisted her. Elnora lived with Mary and helped to raise the children. Elnora died in 1950, Mary in 1983.

This diary was transcribed in February 2008 from a photocopy of the original and submitted by Ann Ianuario.  Original spellings, punctuation, and paragraphing are retained.  The original diary is currently owned by James Reese Brewer, Jr., Fannie's nephew.
