March 12, 1861 - August Term 1861

Currituck County, NC - The Last Will and Testament of Esther MEEKINS

In the name of God Amen.

I Esther MEEKINS concidering the uncertainty of human life and being of sound mind and memory do make and publish this my last will and testament in manner following (that is to say)

Item 1st  I give and bequeath unto my beloved son I.C. MEEKINS my negro boy Willis.

Item 2nd  I give and bequeath unto my beloved son Ephraim MEEKINS my negro girl Vilet and boy Monday.

Item 3rd  I give and bequeath unto my beloved grand children Margaret DOUGH & Daniel W. MEEKINS in concideration of a debt due them from their father my negro boy Sam if not enough I order my estate to make it good.

Item 4th  I give and bequeath unto my beloved grand children heirs of Martha ETHERIDGE my negro woman Mariah & boy George.  I also leave the same in the hands of Daniel W. MEEKINS at my death to divide equally with them.

Item 5th  I give and bequeath unto my beloved grand son I.C. MANN one hundred dollars.

Item 6.  I also order that none of my negroes be sold but valued & drawn for and equally divided among all my children.

Item 7.  I also order that all my lands and property of every kind be sold and after paying my debts to be equally divided among all my heirs.

Item 8th  I also hereby appoint & ordain that my beloved sons F.A. MEEKINS, I.C. MEEKINS & Ephraim MEEKINS be my executors.

In witness whereof, I Esther MEEKINS hath hereunto set my hand and affixed my seal this 12th day of March Eighteen hundred & Sixty one.

    The last will and testament of Esther MEEKINS decd. was exhibited in open court by Francis A. MEEKINS and Ephraim M. MEEKINS two of the executors therein named and propounded for probate and the execution thereof by the said testatrix was duly proved by the oaths and examination of Abraham TWINE & James B. TWINE the subscribing witnesses thereto.  It is adjudged and considered by the Court that the said paper writing and every part thereof is and doth contain the last will and testament of the said Esther MEEKINS and it is further ordered that the same be recorded and filed.
    Isaac C. MEEKINS one of the executors therein named renounces & refuses to qualify as such.  And at the same time the said Francis A. MEEKINS & Ephraim M. MEEKINS appears and qualified by taking the oath prescribed by law.  It is ordered that letters testamentary issue.

    You are hereby notified that at August Term 1861 of Currituck County Court we shall offer for probate in solemn form the paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Esther MEEKINS, when & where you may be present to see proceedings and resist the same if you deem it proper.

    You are hereby notifide that at August Term 1861 of Currituck County Court we shall offer for probate in solemn form paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Esther MEEKINS, when and where you may be present to see proceedings and resist the same if you deem it proper.
To Christopher E. HOOPER & wife Mary E. HOOPER

    You are hereby notifide that at August Term 1861 of Currituck County Court we shall offer for probate in solemn form paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of Esther MEEKINS, when and where you may be present to see proceedings and resist the same if you deem it proper to.
