The Last Will and Testament of Mathias ETHERIDGE dec’d was exhibited in open court at November Term 1846 and the execution of the same proved by the oath of Wilson CORPREW one of the subscribing witnesses thereto in due form of law ordered recorded.

   In the name of God Amen, I Mathias ETHERIDGE of the County of Currituck and State of North Carolina being weak and feeble in body of sound mind and memory do think it necessary to dispose of all such worldly goods which God hath pleased to endow me with (to wit)

   1 I loan to my beloved wife Amey the plantation whereon I now reside during her natural life with the priviledge of cutting and procuring as much fire wood and rail timber from off my lands in the light swamp as will be necessary for the consumption of the land whereon I live, I also give to her and her heirs forever the following negroes man Lewis woman Lydia girl Ritter and the notes I hold against Henry FOREMAN.

   2 I give and bequeath unto my Daughter Harriet FOREMAN the following property one tract of land lying and being in N.C. which I purchased from Petolemy WILSON also negro women Eliza, Hannah, Matilda, girl Victory & boy Henry one mare and colt. The above named property I give and bequeath to her and her heirs forever.

   3 I give and bequeath unto my Son Henry SHAW the plantation whereon I now live after the death of my wife one half of the tract of land I own in the light swamp and in making the division I wish the line to be run through an easterly and westerly course I also give to him the following negroes (to wit) negro girl Salina, George, Duke, & Catherine the above property I give to him and his heirs forever.

   4 I give to my Son Jerome the tract of land called the CULPEPPER & one half of the Light Swamp land I also give and bequeath unto him the following negroes (to wit) negro man Owen, negro woman Patsey & Mary to him and his heirs forever.

   5 The balance of my bonds notes and open accounts not devised I leave to be divided between my children by my last wife and to be kept upon interest by my executrix during her widowhood and after her intermarriage to be divided between them.

   6 After all my just debts are paid which is to be paid out of my chattle property the remains of my estate I loan to my wife during her widowhood and on her intermarriage all the above named property to be sold and equally divided between my two Sons Henry SHAW and Jerome to them and their heirs forever. And Lastly I nominate & appoint my beloved wife Amy my whole and sole executrix to this my last will and Testament hereby revoking all other former will or wills heretofore made by me.  As witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal this 14th day of October in the year of our Lord 1846
