Sylvester Contantine Powers, son of Moses Ballance Powers &
Julia Ann Culpepper, was born c1829 and died before 1900. He was first
married to Susan Bundy (parents unk.) c1852. Susan was born
June 19, 1835 & died between 1867-1870. Sylvester and Susan had the
following known children: 1. John Powers - b. c1853 d. ______ 2. Gideon McDonal Powers - b. c1856 d. May 31, 1936; married Annie L. Powers in Currituck Co. on Oct. 15, 1879 3. Noah Washington Powers - b. Oct. 19, 1858 d. _________; married 1st: Ann E. (Powers) Berry; 2nd Olive A. Miller 4. Daniel Powers - b. c1859 d. _________; married Sammie Williams in Norfolk, Va. on Aug. 24, 1881 5. Rachel Susan Powers - b. Sept. 15, 1863 d. July 2, 1934 [tombstone]; married: Enoch Dalton Culpepper in Currituck Co. on Jan. 30, 1882.
6. Luther L. Powers - b. Nov. 1867 d. __________; married Olivia _______ c1891 In 1880 Sylvester Powers is age 51 and listed as a widower. Living with him are three of his children and a woman named Olevia Deans, age 47, who was born in Virginia and who was plagued with "dropsy" when the census was taken. On September 8, 1883 Sylvester married Olevia in Moyock. Her marriage license states her parents as Richard & Sarah F. Halstead so it is assumed that she was previously married to a Deans. No known children came from this marriage and it is assumed that Olevia probably died before 1886. Mary Jane Thomas was born Oct. 10, 1854 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC to Holloway & Milly Thomas. Mary Jane had been previously married to Charles T. Lowe who was born c1854. They had Aletha V. Lowe (born c1875), Rex H. Lowe (born c1876) and Dennis C. Lowe (born Nov. 1881). On June 1, 1886 Sylvester C. Powers married Mary Jane
(Thomas) Lowe.

in Currituck Co. on Jan. 15, 1889. This union produced 6 children, of which only 5 are
known -- one died before the 1900 census was taken.
