   6. Luther L. Powers - b. Nov. 1867   d. __________; married Olivia _______ c1891

In 1880 Sylvester Powers is age 51 and listed as a widower.  Living with him are three of his children and a woman named Olevia Deans, age 47, who was born in Virginia and who was plagued with "dropsy" when the census was taken.  On September 8, 1883 Sylvester married Olevia in Moyock.  Her marriage license states her parents are Richard & Sarah F. Halstead so it is assumed that she was previously married to a Deans.  No known children came from this marriage and it is assumed that Olevia probably died before 1886.

On June 1, 1886 Sylvester C. Powers married Mary Jane "Mattie" (Thomas) Lowe.  Mary Jane Thomas was born Oct. 10, 1854 in Elizabeth City, Pasquotank Co., NC to Holloway & Milly Thomas.  She had been previously married in 1874 to Charles T. Lowe who was born c1854.  They had Aletha V. Lowe (born c1875), Rex H. Lowe (born c1876) and Dennis C. Lowe (born Nov. 1881).

Sylvester & Mary Jane had the following children:
   1. William Anderson Powers - born June 22, 1888 - died July 16, 1951.  The 1910 Norfolk Va. census shows William as a silk mill warper but he left soon after 1910 to work in New Jersey.  He was married c1916 to Elizabeth ______ who died before 1925. A marriage record from the City of Toronto, Canada shows the following: William Anderson Powers, 30, textile worker, widower, USA, Patterson NJ, s/o Silvester Constantine Powers (b. USA) & Mary Jane Thomas, married Elizabeth Beggs McGaw, 27, Scotland, 140 Howard Park Ave Toronto, d/o William McGaw (b. Scotland) & Jeanie McColm, Witnesses: Alice Mary & Ernest Wilfred Carpenter both of 140 Howard Park Ave Toronto, on May 19, 1925 at High Park Church. William and his family lived in Passaic Co., Paterson City, New Jersey in 1930 and his occupation was still listed as a silk mill warper.

NOTE from Michael Blanchfield received 2/15/2011 states: William Anderson's first wife was Julia Birchenough (Married in 1917, b. 11 November 1879 in England, d. 28 June 1922 in Paterson NJ). Their children were Mary Genevieve (b 28 April 1918 d. 21 October 1976) and Virginia Clare (my mother) b. 10 December 1921, d. 2 April 1993. Julia was almost 10 years older than William Anderson and died less than 7 months after my mother was born. My mother was raised until about age seven by William Anderson's sister, Mary Millicent Powers in Norfolk, Virginia, and then she was sent north to be raised by William Anderson's second wife, Elizabeth Beggs McGaw (b. 21 October 1894 in Scotland, d. 14 June 1990 in Wayne NJ). It was the second marriage for both (married 1925).  William A. and Elizabeth Beggs McGaw had two children, another William Anderson (I do not recall him using Jr.) b 16 February 1926, d. August 1985, and Edith Elizabeth (b. 8 September 1932, d. 31 May 2010).

   2. Mary Millicent Powers - born Nov. 16, 1889 - died Sept. 24, 1973 in Norfolk, Va.  Mary Millicent never married but lived with her half-brother, Dennis C. Lowe, in Norfolk, Va. from 1910-1930.
