Currituck County Photographs

Alexander Vincent & Mary (Ballance) Jarvis
Alexander Vincent Jarvis was born July 17, 1839 in Currituck County.  He married Mary Ballance in Currituck Co. on October 13, 1867.  Mary was born c.1845 and died Nov. 4, 1932.  He fought for the Confederacy during the Civil War and enlisted on August 1, 1861 in Co. B, 8th Infantry Regiment of North Carolina.  Alexander was the son of John Jarvis but his mother's name is unknown since she appears to have died before 1850.  From letters written by Alexander to his brother, John M. Jarvis  and other family members, they indicate that his mother's family were White's.  Alexander had 12 known siblings of which only 6 have been identified.  Those 6 are:
1. John M. Jarvis born Nov 1, 1819 [see his 1873 Livingston Co., Missouri will here]
2. Dorcas Jarvis born 1823 in Currituck, NC; married Andrew Walker in  1845
3. Nancy Jarvis born 1824; married John T. Hampton
4. Foster Jarvis born 1831
5. Sarah Jarvis born 1834
6. Joseph Jarvis 1837

The old letters indicate that there might have been a brother named Silas Jarvis and there was also an indication that one of Alexander's sisters married a Griggs since there is mention of a nephew named Joseph Griggs.  There were two Griggs children living with them in 1880.

Alexander Vincent Jarvis and Mary had no children.  They were living in the Seaboard District of Princess Anne Co., Virginia in 1880 & 1900 but have not been found in any records after that time.  Alexander V. Jarvis died April 17, 1912.  He and Mary are both buried in the Hampton Cemetery in Waterlily, N.C.  If anyone has any more information on this family please let me know so I can update this page.
