Photo submitted by Ben Bateman who wrote: "My great-grandmother, Melissa Hampton [Smith] attended the chapel and worked for Pierce Hampton at the Hampton Lodge before she married my great-grandfather, Dempsey Smith." Jessie Markert Rivers, whose mother owned the property where the chapel once stood, wrote in July 2009: "The original school house and chapel supposedly stood near the marsh road. They were moved together to the high ground near Hampton Cemetery. The chapel is gone but the school house still stands behind Zorada Snowden’s home. Ms. Bernie S. Hampton was recorded as the Waterlily public school teacher in 1904 (NC Yearbook published by N&O [News & Observer]). |
