Willoughby Owens Home

Located off U.S. Highway 158 near Powells Point.

     This house was the home of the grandparents of Alma Owens Roberts.  Her grandfather, Willoughby Owens (1841 - 26 Nov 1913) married Susan Jane O'Neal (21 Feb 1832 - 18 Oct 1907).  She was married previously to William Payne.  Their son, Nathan O'Neal Owens (30 Jan 1866 - 5 Apr 1933) married Bessie May Walker (1881 - 1945) and they had Alma Mae Owens who married George Frank Roberts, and a son, Samuel "Sambo" Owens. Another son, Samuel Jackson Owens (1863 - 1916) and his wife, Betty Payne O'Neal (widow Perry) lived in the
house.  The house was occupied by black families until the 1960's and was demolished in the mid-1970's.  It stood south of Olds Hill on Case Landing Road.
     Susan Jane O'Neal was the daughter of Nathan O'Neal (1776 - 1852) and his second wife, Frances Payne.  Her siblings were:  Mary L. O'Neal (b. 1834), William Howard O'Neal (b. 1836) married Sarah Woodhouse (1859 - 1899); John Richard O'Neal (b. 1840); Christopher O'Neal (1842 - 1854); Eberley O'Neal (b. 1843); Bethany O'Neal (1848 - 1923) married Charles Hobbs; and Nathan Frances O'Neal (1852 - 1919) married Norris Baum Owens (1843 - 1920).
     Susan Jane O'Neal (Payne) Owens (21 Feb 1832 - 18 Oct 1907) was half-aunt of Luraner O'Neal (17 Dec 1828 - 18 Sep 1882), who married first Nathan Etheridge and second William Davenport Chadwick.  Luraner was the daughter of Christopher O'Neal (3 Mar 1800 - before 1853) and his wife, Elvira Midgett O'Neal.  Christopher O'Neal was the son of Nathan O'Neal (10 Jan 1776 - 2 Nov 1852) by his first wife, Bethany Riggs Midgett, who died prior to 1832.  One of the daughters from the first marriage was Elvira Etheridge (3 Nov 1849 - 28 Feb 1933) who married Walter Scott Newbern (29 Oct 1847 - 7 Sep 1918).  Their granddaughter was Margaret Elizabeth Newbern 26 Aug 1908 - 8 Jul 1994) (Mrs. Russell Sage Fowler), who served for many years during the late 1970's and early 1980's as president of the Currituck County Historical Society.  Margaret Fowler and Alma Roberts were lifelong friends as well as being distant cousins.
     Through her first marriage to William Payne, Susan Jane O'Neal (Payne) Owens was the mother of:  Mary Morgan Payne (4 Apr 1850 - 13 Nov 1915) who married first Josiah Owens and second Dr. Henry Gaskins Land, widower of Sarah Jane Poyner Land; and William Ann Payne (27 Mar 1853 - 8 Nov 1927) who married John C. Gallop.
