Currituck County Photographs

Greaves couple?

The only thing on the back of this photograph was the word "Greaves".  Sybil Tiedemann believes this couple to be John Wescott Greaves and his wife, Nancy (Gallop) Greaves who were married in Currituck County on April 27, 1871.  The marriage license indicated that John Wescott Greaves was the son of John and Bethany Greaves.  Nancy Gallop was the oldest child of Benjamin G. Gallop and Director Gregory and was almost blind from birth but was quite an accomplished knitter.   Nancy was born July 25, 1836 in Currituck County and died in Ransomville, NC on Feb. 26, 1904.  John Wescott Greaves and Nancy Gallop had one child, a daughter named Mary who was born Aug. 12, 1874 in Currituck Co. and died in Beaufort Co. on May 21, 1951.  Mary married Benjamin P. Wilkins--see their photo here.
Bethana Grieves, age 55, was listed in the 1850 census and John, age 21, was still in the household with her.  In 1870 John Greaves, age 42, is a farm laborer in the home of Jonathan Parker.  These two census records would put John W. Greaves' birth year at circa 1828.  By 1880 Nancy (Gallop) Greaves, age 44, is listed as a widow in Poplar Branch Twp. of Currituck Co. and is living next door to her brother, Levi M. Gallop, and her widowed mother, Director (Gregory) Gallop.  This would put John W. Greaves' death date between 1874-1880.
If any of you can positively identify this couple please let me know so I can update this page.
