Currituck County Photographs

Peter Gregory Gallop & Caroline W. (Daniels) Gallop
21 Sept 1843 - 24 Dec 1921 ~~~ 20 Oct 1848 - 22 April 1918

Peter Gregory Gallop, oldest son of Benjamin G. Gallop and Director (Gregory) Gallop, was born in 1843 in Harbinger, Currituck Co., NC.  Caroline W. Daniels, daughter of Charles Skinner Daniels and Elizabeth "Betsy" Basnight, was born in Wanchese, NC (now Dare Co.) in 1848.  Peter was the census taker for the 1870 Dare Co. census.  According to the 1900 & 1910 Dare Co., NC census Peter and Caroline were married circa 1864.  Peter's occupation was a lighthouse keeper.  He was assistant keeper at Roanoke Island Marshes Lighthouse from  1873-74 and was keeper from 1874-78.  He was keeper for the Bodie Island Light (years unknown to me) but was transferred to the Bouy Depot in Washington, NC in 1906.  Peter and Caroline were blessed with 9 children: Isadora, Beatrice, Colinda Alice, Eliza Gertrude, Martha, Lillie, Marvin Leslie, Ezekiel Roscoe, and Carrie.  Peter and Caroline are both buried in the Cudworth Cemetery in Wanchese.  If you have any further information on this family please send me an e-mail so I can add it here.

NOTE: This photograph was taken in Elizabeth City, NC by Jno. F. Engle.  Mr. Engle (born c. 1835 in New Jersey) was living in Fernandina, Florida in 1870.  He was listed as a photographer and his wife, Belle, was listed as an "artist--coloring photographs".  By 1880 John F. Engle was living in Raleigh, NC and was listed as a photographer.  In 1900 Belle Engle, age 57, is living in Elizabeth City and running a boarding house.  The census says she's married but her husband is not in the household.  From all indications, I would say that the above photograph was taken between 1890-1900.
