Bessie Maud Sherrod was born Feb. 25, 1901 in Tipton Co., TN and died Dec. 15, 1999 at the age of 98 in Currituck, North Carolina.  Bessie was the daughter of William Alexander Sherrod (1861 - 1956 Covington, Tipton Co., TN) and Ada Goodloe (1863 Florence, Alabama - 1945).  Bessie graduated from George Peabody College in Nashville, TN.  She had advanced courses at Columbia University which qualified her to be a principal.  She grew up in Memphis, and Maud Newberry, Supt. of Currituck Co. Schools recruited Bess to come to Currituck.  Bessie was a school teacher at W.T. Griggs School (see her 3rd & 4th class here) but she also taught the Young People's Class beginning in 1930 at Pilmoor United Methodist Church and later taught the Women's Bible Class.  Bessie married Charles Wilson Dunton in Currituck Co. on June 26, 1937 (see marriage certificate).  Bessie, her husband Charlie, and their unnamed infant daughter are all buried in New Hollywood Cemetery in Elizabeth City, NC.
