Dennis D. Dudley

Dennis D. Dudley, son of Thomas & Elizabeth "Betsy" Dudley, was born in Gibbs Woods, Currituck Co. on Nov. 3, 1830 and died on Mar. 31, 1894.  He was first married to Eliza Lambert, d/o Hillary & Margaret Lambert, in Norfolk, Co., Va. on Nov. 23, 1854.  In 1860 they lived in the Elizabeth River Parish of Norfolk Co., Va. and in 1870-1880 they were in the Tanners Creek Precinct of Norfolk Co.  They had 4 known children:
   1) William Thomas Dudley - b. c1855 Virginia  d: by 1870
 
  2) Charles R. Dudley - b. c1857 Virginia  d. by 1870
   3) Margaret A. "Maggie" Dudley - b. Oct. 1862 Virginia; d. Feb. 2, 1945; married Wilson Milton Whitehurst on May 31, 1881 Norfolk, Va.  Wilson was born in Apr. 1862 and died Dec. 25, 1936.  Both are buried in Elmwood Cemetery in Norfolk, Va.
   4) Elizabeth Dudley - b. c1865 Virginia  d. married or dead by 1900

Dennis was married 2nd to Sarah Jane Boyd, d/o **Thomas Boyd, in Norfolk Co., Va. on Oct. 22, 1874.  Sarah was born in 1850 and died before 1900.  They had two known children:
   1) Dennis D. Dudley, Jr. - b. Aug. 14, 1875  d. Feb. 26, 1909 of tuberculosis.  Dennis lived with his sister, Maggie, and her husband, Wilson M. Whitehurst, when the 1900 census was taken.  He was single at that time.
   2) Samuel Jackson Dudley - b. Nov. 17, 1883  d. Aug. 30, 1949; married 1st Mattie Holland; 2nd Lydia L. Smith; 3rd Lillie Anne (Capps) Dozier, widow of George W. Dozier

[**NOTE: The Norfolk, Va. marriage license between Dennis Dudley & Sarah Jane Boyd lists her father as Thomas Boyd and mother as unknown.  Jack Dudley, the submitter of these photographs, says that Sarah Jane's parents were actually John Boyd & Fanny Simmons who had Sarah Jane in 1850, Thomas S. Boyd in 1851 and Joseph Boyd in 1854.]

Samuel Jackson Dudley, son of Dennis D. Dudley and his second wife, Sarah, was born in 1883 & died in 1949.  He was 1st married to Mattie Holland on Mar. 20, 1907. This marriage ended in divorce in 1910.  He was married 2nd to Lydia L. Smith, d/o Ezekiel T. & Sarah Anne Smith, on May 10, 1913. Lydia was born Nov. 7, 1895 and died Aug. 29, 1933.  Samuel & Lydia had several children, some that died at birth, the last one taking Lydia's life in 1933.  The two known children are: 
   1) Margaret Lee Dudley - b. Sept. 27, 1916 Princess Anne Co., Va.  d. June 1971 Petersburg, Va.  She married Paul Vinton Hollingsworth on Jan. 6, 1936 in Norfolk, Va.
   2) Junius Jackson Dudley, Sr. - b. Nov. 12, 1923  d. June 9, 1988; married 1st Elma Lee Humphrey; married 2nd Laura Frances Murden on June 17, 1962 in Princess Anne Co., Va.

Samuel Jackson Dudley was married for the 3rd time to Lillie Ann (Capps) Dozier on Oct. 24, 1934.  Lillie was the widow of George W. Dozier.  She was born to Addison & Jaca A. Stone Capps on Sept. 11, 1878 and died June 15, 1962.

Junius Jackson Dudley, Sr. married Elma Lee Humphrey, d/o Royal Corbett & Nellie Mae (Pittman) Humphrey, in Elizabeth City, NC on Jan. 25, 1947.  Elma Lee was born Mar. 20, 1931 and died July 8, 2000.  An obituary appeared in June 1988 in The Virginian-Pilot for Junius Jackson Dudley, Sr. which stated:
CHESAPEAKE - Junius "Jack" Dudley, Sr., 64, of 324 Bartell St., a retired mechanic died June 9, 1988 in Norfolk.  Mr. Dudley, a native of Princess Anne County, retired from the City of Norfolk after 26 years.  Survivors include his wife, Laura F. Dudley; a daughter, Doris Hamilton of Chesapeake; two sons, Samuel Jackson Dudley of Chesapeake and Junius Jackson Dudley, Jr. of Wyandotte, Michigan; a sister, Goldie Hart of Long Beach, Calif.; a brother, Lee Dozier of Norfolk.  Eight grandchildren and one great-grandchild.  A funeral will be conducted at 1pm. Saturday in Hollomon-Brown & Snellings Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, Burial will be in Charity Cemetery in Virginia Beach.  Friends may join the family from 7pm to 9pm today in the funeral home.  [see his tombstone here]

Nellie Mae Pittman was born in New Bern, NC on Sept. 12, 1907 Jacksonville, NC and died Feb. 26, 1981 at Knotts Island, Currituck Co., NC.  Royal Corbett Humphrey was born in Jacksonville, NC on July 14, 1903 and died Feb. 8, 1975 in Chesapeake, Va..  Nellie and Royal married on Oct. 2, 1926 in Jacksonville, NC.  They had 9 children.
