Currituck County Photographs

 Mrs. C.B. Barnard

This was the caption on the back of the photograph.  Looks like "Mrs. C.B. Barnard's picture.  Daughter Aunt Maud  Bar____ and Sarah O'neal".  Does anyone have a clue who this is?  If so, please let me know.

Although not proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it seems that the mystery of "Mrs. C.B. Barnard" may have been solved!  See explanation below.

Elizabeth "Bettie" (Gregory) Gregory Barnard aka Mrs. C.B. Barnard

Zion Gregory

Update from Judy Merrell Brickhouse on 9/13/2005 --This woman I believe is Elizabeth Gregory (b: Aug. 20, 1850 d: Jan. 20, 1921), wife of Zion Gregory and Caleb Barnard..  Elizabeth was the daughter of Luke Gregory (born c. 1826 Camden Co.) and Cordelia Jones (born c. 1832 Camden Co.).  She could possibly be Mrs. C.B. Barnard [shown in the photo at the top of this page].  After Elizabeth's husband, Zion Gregory, passed away she married Caleb BarnardCaleb & Elizabeth Barnard are listed In the 1900 census of Currituck Co. (Crawford Twp.) Caleb was age 49 and Elizabeth was 50.  This census states they have been married 17 years which would put their marriage date around 1883.  This also states that Elizabeth had 9 children born to her but only 6 are now living--4 of those are in the home--Claude Barnard age 14, Cordelia Barnard age 12, Lular Barnard age 7 and Maud L. Barnard age 6.  In the 1910 Currituck Co. census (Poplar Branch Twp.) in the household of Henry Gregory are his half-sister, Maud Barnard age 16, his half-brother, Claude Barnard age 23, and his widowed mother, Bettie age 59.  These two photographs hung in the living room of my Uncle Henry Gregory's house so it just stands to reason that they would be his parents. Update from Judy Merrell Brickhouse on 9/13/2005 -- I think this is Zion Gregory of Camden, NC who was born about 1849 and died before 1880.  He was the son of John R. Gregory (b: 1802 d: 1851)  and Margaret Torksey (b: Aug. 1, 1813 and died Feb. 13, 1886) both of Camden, NC.  He was the first husband of Elizabeth "Bettie" Gregory who later married Caleb Barnard.
