Cecil Kermit VANDEGRIFT, SR

NEWPORT NEWS - Cecil Kermit VANDEGRIFT, SR., 63, died Sunday, Feb. 11, in Riverside Regional Medical Center.  A native of Currituck County, N.C., Mr. VANDEGRIFT had been a Peninsula resident 13 years. He retired as an electronics specialist with civil service at Langley Air Force Base in 1982 after 30 years.  Mr. VANDEGRIFT was a member of North Riverside Baptist Church; and a life member of Hillcreast Masonic Lodge No. 397, Dalzell, S.C.  Survivors include his wife, Bessie T. VANDEGRIFT; a daughter, Kathy Ann SCARBERRY of Smithfield; two sons, Cecil K. VANDEGRIFT, JR. of Barstow, Calif., and Arthur T. VANDEGRIFT of Newport News; his mother, Ethel VANDEGRIFT of Moyock, N.C.; a sister, Katie MILLER of North Carolina; and nine grandchildren.  A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Weymouth Funeral Home by the Rev. John SOWELL. Burial will be in Peninsula Memorial Park. Masonic rites will be held by Warwick Lodge No. 336. Ethel Culpepper VANDEGRIFT

Mrs. Ethel Culpepper VANDEGRIFT, age 99, of Moyock, N.C., died Saturday, Oct. 2, 1993, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. She was a native of Currituck, N.C., and a member of the Fellowship Baptist Church, Currituck.  She was the daughter of the late Enoch CULPEPPER and Rachel Powers CULPEPPER and the widow of Leonard K. VANDEGRIFT.  Mrs. VANDEGRIFT is survived by a daughter, Katie V. MILLER of Moyock; 13 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.  Graveside services will be conducted in Moyock Memorial Cemetery on Tuesday, Oct. 5, at 2 p.m. by the Rev. Theo Vinson VANN

BARCO - Theo Vinson VANN, 93, a homemaker, died Dec. 12, 1994, in Sentara Nursing Center, Barco.  Mrs. VANN was born in Hertford County, N.C., and was the widow of Tulie B. VANN. She was a member of Meherrin Baptist Church.  Survivors include a daughter, Lorene V. SUTTON of Virginia Beach; grandchildren, Vann SUTTON of Norfolk, Elizabeth BROWNING of Fair View Heights, Ill., Maria DRINKO of Great Falls, Va., Carolyn BRITTON of Virginia Beach and Yvonne TOLL of Hudson, Ohio; and nine great-grandchildren. A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Meherrin Baptist Church by the Rev. Billy SELLERS and the Rev. Jerry HOLCOMB. Burial will be in the church cemetery. GRANDY - Ola Jeanean VanNOSTRAND, 65, died March 30, 1995.  She was a native of Grandy, N.C., and was a former barber in Oceana. She was the widow of Marvin Lee VanNOSTRAND.  Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Judy Ann and James Howard JOHNSON of Newport News; one son and daughter-in-law, James Lee and Kathleen Marie VanNOSTRAND of Virginia Beach; two sisters, Mary OUTLAW of Grandy, N.C., and Bertha THOMPSON of Virginia Beach; four grandchildren, Stephanie Lynn PERRY of Pasadena, Md., Kimberly Jean PERRY of Newport News, Raymond Lee VanNOSTRAND of Virginia Beach, and Steven Joseph VanNOSTRAND of Virginia Beach.  The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday in Holloman-Brown Funeral Home, Lynnhaven Chapel, by the Rev. Richard Noel VanSYOC

KNOTTS ISLAND - Richard Noel VanSYOC, 62, passed away Dec. 17, 2005. He was a native of Milo, Iowa. Mr. VanSYOC was a retired senior chief from the U.S. Navy. He was predeceased by his father, Lyle B. VanSYOC. Richard is survived by his wife, Sondra A. VanSYOC; his mother, Faye Furgison VanSYOC of Milo; four daughters, Michele GARCIA of Pittsville, Mass., Melissa SMITH of Eddyville, Iowa, Kathy CRAFT of Hobbsville, N.C., and Rebecca POWERS of Moyock, N.C.; three sons, Edward Barry POWERS, JR. of Knotts Island, Michael J. VanSYOC of Knotts Island and John R. POWERS of Elizabeth City, N.C.; one sister, Karen ENDRES of Des Moines, Iowa; and one brother, Leonard VanSYOC of Milo. Mr. VanSYOC also is survived by 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Visitation will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at Twiford’s Colonial Chapel, 929 S. Battlefield Blvd., Chesapeake. Robert N. VENSEL

GRANDY
Robert N. VENSEL, 74, died Friday, Nov. 27 at the Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Parkersburg, West Virginia and was a member of Nemesis Shrine Group in Parkersburg, the Coinjock American Legion Hut #388, and attended Mt. Zion United Methodist Church. He was retired from the U.S. Marines, having served in WWII. He also served in the U.S. Army and the W. Va. National Guards. He was the son of the late Oscar Raymond and Ova Belle Dawson VENSEL and the husband of Virginia Burkett VENSEL of the residence. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters: Shelia McLEAN of Tucson, Arizona and Jennifer GRIFFITH of Flagler Beach, Fla.; three sons: Robert N. VENSEL, JR. of Parkersburg, Kenneth VENSEL and Raymond VENSEL, both of Jacksonville, Fla.; one brother, Kenneth VENSEL of Parkersburg; 12 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be Monday, Nov. 30 at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg. Burial will be in Sunset Memory Garden in Parkersburg. A memorial service will be Wednesday, Dec. 28, 2005, at noon at Mount Zion United Methodist Church in Grandy, N.C. A funeral service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Leavitt Funeral Home in Parkersburg, W.Va.  Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Earlie Whitfield VERNON

Earlie Whitfield VERNON, age 89, of 464 Guinea Rd., Moyock, NC died Thursday, October 23, 2014 at his residence. He was born in Galax, VA to the late Earl and Ida Choate VERNON and was the husband of Irene Parker VERNON of the residence. Mr. VERNON served his country in the U. S. Navy for twenty one years. After his retirement from the Navy, he joined the Virginia Beach Police Department in 1965, was promoted to Master Police Officer in l978 and retired in 1979 after fourteen years of exemplary service. He was a member of the Police Association of Virginia for forty-nine years. He was a member of the Old Country Baptist Church, Salisbury, NC.  In addition to his wife of sixty-eight years, he is survived by four daughters, Kay BUTLER of Mt. Airy, NC, Carrol SEMONES and husband Larry of Gates, NC, Brenda COSTANTINO and husband Jim of Salisbury, NC and Danette VERNON of Moyock, NC; two sons Tony VERNON and wife Sandra, and Ace VERNON and wife Kim all of Moyock, NC; ten grandchildren; eighteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.  A funeral service will be held Monday, October 27, 2014 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel officiated by Rev. Frank THIGPEN. Burial with military honors provided by Clarence Jackson VFW Post #6060 will follow in Moyock Cemetery. A visitation will be held Sunday, October 26, 2014, at Twiford Funeral Home from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. Twiford Funeral Home, Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Irene Georgia Parker VERNON

Irene Georgia Parker VERNON, 89 of 464 Guinea Road, Moyock, NC died Thursday, May 31, 2018 at her residence. She was born June 20, 1928 in Mount Airy, NC to the late Edward Blaine PARKER and Georgia Pruitt PARKER and was the widow of Earlie Whitfield VERNON. She was a homemaker and a member of Fellowship Baptist Church.  She is survived by four daughters, Kay BUTLER of Mount Airy, NC, Carroll SEMONES (Larry) of Moyock, NC, Brenda COSTANTINO (Jim) of Salisbury, NC, and Danny VERNON of Moyock, NC; one son, Tony VERNON (Lilly Faye) of Moyock, NC; eight grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren. She was predeceased by a son, Ace VERNON.  A funeral service will be held Monday, June 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. at Twiford Memorial Chapel with the Pastor Eric EARHART officiating. Burial will follow in Moyock Cemetery. The family will receive friends Sunday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. at the funeral home and at other times at the residence. Winnie Ferebee VERNON

Winnie Ferebee VERNON, 45, of 102 Algonquin Trail, Shawboro, NC, died Tuesday, January 20, 2015 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Winnie was born May 8, 1969, and was the daughter of James H., Jr. and Diane Humphries FEREBEE of Shawboro. A Registered Nurse, she was formerly employed with Community Home Care & Hospice in Elizabeth City, and was a member of Providence Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, James Edward VERNON, II; her daughter, Sydney Maran VERNON; her son, James Edward VERNON, III; her paternal grandmother, Ann G. FEREBEE; her sister, Crystal FEREBEE; and her brothers, James H. FEREBEE, III, Joel H. FEREBEE, and Eric G. FEREBEE. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 2:00 p.m. in Providence Baptist Church by the Rev. Charles STEVENS. Friends may join the family in the fellowship hall of the church immediately following the service. MOYOCK - Diane Cummings VIA, 57, of Trevor Way, died Sept. 29, 2005, at her residence. She was a native of Bronx, N.Y., and the daughter of Maryanne Bachman CUMMINGS and the late William Rody CUMMINGS. She was preceded in death by her husband, Everett Eugene VIA. She was employed with the Military Sealift Command as a purser. Survivors include her mother, Maryanne Bachman CUMMINGS of Virginia Beach; a daughter, Stacy MEAD and husband Kenneth of Moyock; a son, William ROGERS and wife Tara of Knoxville, Tenn.; two sisters, Laurie NAPPI and Alice CUMMINGS, both of Virginia Beach; a brother, John CUMMINGS of King George, Va.; and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday at the Navy Chapel Naval Station Norfolk with U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Randall RUSSELL, chaplain, officiating.  Twiford’s Funeral Home, 405 E. - Callie Louise Crawford Bowden VICK, 72, died at Chesapeake General Hospital on Saturday, December 7. Born in Pitt County on September 20, 1930, she was the daughter of the late George W. and Lena Harris CRAWFORD. The Crawford family moved to Norfolk, Va. in 1943 where she graduated from Broad Creek Village High School in 1947. She was employed by the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Company from 1947-1964. She later moved to Coinjock in 1970 where she operated Vick's Grocery at the foot of the old Intercoastal Waterway Bridge with her late husband, William Edward VICK. She is survived by her three children: sons, C. Douglas BOWDEN, JR. and William Edward VICK, III and daughter, Bonnie Vick SIMONDS and husband Lem; 3 grandchildren; two brothers: Cecil W. CRAWFORD and wife Helen of Norfolk and Louis R. CRAWFORD and wife Billie of Chesterfield, Va.; her sister, Elizabeth C. FORBES of Greenville; her sister-in-law, Katie CRAWFORD of Colonial Heights, Va.; and many nieces and nephews. There will be a memorial service at the Coinjock Baptist Church at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 14 with the Rev. Charles H. WELLONS officiating. Jack Kneal VINCENT, 84, died April 2 at his residence. He was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. and was retired from the Navy after 23 years of service. He was a member of Moyock United Methodist Church. He is survived by three daughters: Peggy JONES and Brenda COX of Virginia Beach and Pamela WHITEHURST of Moyock; 6 grandchildren and a great-grandson. A graveside service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday in Moyock Memorial Cemetery with the Rev. John WOODARD officiating. Twiford Colonial Chapel in Chesapeake is handling arrangements. NAGS HEAD - Carlene Smith VIRDEN, 82, formerly of Coinjock, NC, died Tuesday, January 30, 2007 in Nags Head. Born in Lavonia, GA, she was the daughter of the late Carl and Colma SMITH and was the widow of Walter Milton VIRDEN. She was a homemaker and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.   Mrs. VIRDEN is survived by a son, Jerry "Gus" VIRDEN of Bellevue, NE; a daughter-in-law, Anchali VIRDEN of Bellevue, NE; three granddaughters and six great grandchildren.  A graveside memorial service will be conducted on Monday, February 5, 2007 at 11:00 AM at the Snowden Cemetery in Maple, NC by the Rev. James Martin VOLIVA, SR.

MOYOCK - James Martin "Jimmy" VOLIVA, SR., 68, of East Ridge Road in Moyock, died Friday, Dec. 31, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. He was a native of Camden County, son of Elizabeth Sawyer VOLIVA of Elizabeth City and the late Clyde S. VOLIVA, and was the husband of Dorothy P. "Dot" VOLIVA of the residence. Mr. VOLIVA served in the US Air Force. He was retired from Ford Motor Company and was past president of Local 919. He was also retired from the UAW International as Representative, Region No. 8, and was a former County Commissioner and a member of Shawboro Ruritans. He was a member of Providence Baptist Church where he was a former Sunday school superintendent and deacon. He also coached county league baseball. Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by two sons, Tony VOLIVA and his wife Donna of Currituck and Mike VOLIVA and his wife Lena of Sligo; a sister, Linda MAYO and her husband Gilbert of Raleigh; a brother, Larry VOLIVA and his wife Bonnie of Eugene, Ore.; five grandchildren, Martin, Marybeth, Evan, Sarah and Adam VOLIVA. He was predeceased by a son, Jim M. VOLIVA, JR.; five brothers; and two sisters. A funeral will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in Twiford's Memorial Chapel, 405 E. Church St., Elizabeth City, with the Rev.
