MOYOCK - Martin Jarvis spent much of his life working Currituck County land that has been owned by his family since the 1800s and remained a part of the Currituck bank that was founded by his grandfather in 1920.  On Wednesday, at about 6:30 p.m., Jarvis, 59, was killed when his single-engine aircraft crashed into a remote farm field not far from his Moyock home and the same land he farmed.  Thursday morning, the Aviat A-1 aircraft still sat nose down and tail up several hundred yards from the nearest farm path and about a half-mile from Cooper Garrett Road in Moyock. The Currituck County Sheriff's Office awaited the arrival of FAA officials to begin an investigation into what happened.  Jarvis operated one of the county's largest farms with his wife, Cynthia, and two sons, according to cooperative extension agent Tommy Grandy. The land is recognized by the state's Century Farm Family program because it's been in the family so long, he said.  "We will miss him in the agriculture community," Grandy said.  Among other things Jarvis was known for, he practiced no-till farming to conserve soil and water and left vegetative buffers on the edges of the fields, creating prime wildlife habitat.  "Martin was a really good and innovative farmer," said friend Harvey Roberts. "He was a pioneer in preserving agricultural land and wildlife."  In the 1990s and early 2000s, when housing developments took up much of the farmland along N.C. 168 around Moyock, concern for the disappearing rural lifestyle brought about farm preservation efforts. Jarvis served with Roberts on a citizens group that advised Currituck officials on saving farmland.  Jarvis typically used an unpaved airstrip on his property, Roberts said. He was flying alone Wednesday.  Jarvis' grandfather, W.W. Jarvis, founded the Bank of Currituck in 1920. TowneBank bought out the Bank of Currituck and its six North Carolina branches last year. Martin Jarvis served as a member of the board of directors, said Stanley Griggs, chairman of the board for TowneBank of Currituck.  "Martin was a very knowledgeable businessman and very articulate," Griggs said. "Our sympathy goes out to his family. It is a tragic event."   (The Virginian-Pilot – Friday, October 7, 2011)

MOYOCK - The wings of a small private airplane "went vertical" just before it crashed, killing the pilot earlier this month, according to a preliminary report by the National Transportation Safety Board.  Martin Jarvis, 59, a well-known Currituck farmer and banker, died Oct. 5 at about 6:30 p.m. when his Aviat Husky A-1 crashed into a field not far from his Moyock home.  Just a few seconds before he crashed, witnesses saw the aircraft above the tree line when the wings "went vertical" and the nose turned toward the ground, according to the report.  The left wing tip struck the ground and the aircraft tumbled before sliding to a stop in a field not far from Cooper Garrett Road in Moyock. Jarvis, who had a private airstrip on his property, was often seen and heard flying in the area where he farmed.  The engine sounded normal, according to the witnesses.  After the crash, the engine and flight controls appeared to be in good order and the tanks had fuel, the report said.  Jarvis and his family operated one of the largest farms in Currituck County. His grandfather founded the Bank of Currituck, bought by TowneBank last year.  A final report with a probable cause of the accident will be released later.  (The Virginian-Pilot – Thursday, October 27, 2011)
