Alline Halstead HAAKE, 61, died May 27, 1992. Mrs. HAAKE was born in Currituck County, N.C. She was a member of Bethel United Methodist Church. Survivors include a daughter, Teri Lynn BAUHS of Bakersfield, Calif.; a son, Steven H. HAAKE of Pittsburgh; her father, Marvin W. HALSTEAD of Virginia Beach; a sister, Jean WHITE of Annandale, Va.; and two grandchildren. The funeral will be conducted at 10 a.m. Monday in Bethel United Methodist Church by the Rev. John SHAPPELL. Elinor Bray HACKNEY, 82, a retired secretary, died Jan. 18, 1992, in a hospital. Mrs. HACKNEY was born in Currituck County and retired from Sovran Bank's trust department. She was the widow of Everett Pennington HACKNEY. Survivors include a sister, Elizabeth ``Libby'' CARTER of Coinjock. A memorial graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday in Hampton Cemetery, Waterlily, N.C., by the Rev. George POLLOCK. CURRITUCK - Mary Dowdy HACKWORTH, 88, passed away May 10, 2016, in Youngsville, NC. Born in South Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late William and Mary DOWDY. She was a retired Administrative Secretary from Norfolk Public Schools. Left to cherish her memory: her husband, George Wesley HACKWORTH; daughter, Darlene MIDGETTE of Suffolk; son, Randall HACKWORTH of Youngsville, NC; grandchildren, Michael ELMORE of Suffolk and Jessica COX and her husband Sean of Clayton, NC; and a great grandson, Daniel ELMORE of Suffolk. Constance Marie "Connie" HALL, 43, of 215 James Way, Jarvisburg, NC, died Friday, June 24, 2011 at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in the Philippines, she was the daughter of John Ronald HALL and wife Rhonda YOSINSKI of Hamilton, VA and Peggy Carol Baum TILLETT of Grandy, NC. She was a self-employed caregiver and housekeeper. In addition to her parents, Ms. HALL is survived by her son, John Benjamin HALL and wife Kelly of Manteo, NC and their son, Erik; sisters, Caryn Jean HARRIS of Grandy, NC and Jamie Lynn HUGGINS and husband Tod of Gloucester, VA; nephew, Michael HARRIS; her nieces, Brooke HARRIS and Alexis HUGGINS; and her significant other, Richard SPRUILL. She was preceded in death by her step-father, Robert A. TILLETT. Funeral services will be conducted Tuesday, June 28, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. at Jarvisburg Church of Christ with the Rev. MOYOCK - Frances Poyner HALL, 82, of the 445 Caratoke Highway, died Sunday, March 31 at her residence. She was born in Currituck County, daughter of the late Jett Wilson and Amanda Reese POYNER. She was the widow of John Edgar HALL. She was a member of Moyock United Methodist Church, and an active volunteer in her church and the Moyock community. Mrs. HALL is survived by a daughter, Lois Hall COLLINS and husband Charles of Forest Park, Ga.; a son, James Wilson HALL and wife Becky of Moyock; two sisters: Elizabeth Poyner SANDERLIN of Shawboro, and Margaret Poyner PAINTER of Moyock; five grandchildren: Michael HALL and wife Katherine, Holly HALL, Lei COLLINS, Amanda COLLINS, and Joy COLLINS. Mrs. HALL was preceded in death by a sister and a brother, Alice Poyner STEPHENS and Walter Martin POYNER, SR. MOYOCK - Frank R. HALL, 86, of Creek Drive, passed away Tuesday, Nov. 12, 2002, in his home. A native of North Carolina, Mr. HALL was the retired owner and operator of Tidewater Automotive Service Center. He is survived by seven grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, a sister and a daughter-in-law. A graveside service was conducted Saturday at 10 a.m. in Rosewood Memorial Park in Virginia Beach. VIRGINIA BEACH - The Rev. Jeremiah M. HALL, 88, of the 700 block of Fern Court, died Sept. 27, 2002. A resident of Moyock, N.C., he was the widower of Isabell O. HALL and retired after 21 years from the Naval Air Station. Mr. HALL was a member of New Hope Baptist Church, Virginia Beach. The Rev. HALL pastored five churches, three in Virginia: Pleasant Valley Baptist Church Chesapeake, Little Piney Grove Baptist Church (Creeds) Virginia Beach and Weeping Mary Baptist Church Chesapeake, which was rebuilt under his pastorate in 1966; and two churches in North Carolina, Zion Tabernacle Church in Corapeake and Galatia Baptist Church in Hertford. Survivors include a daughter, Delores CLARK of Norfolk; two grandsons; one granddaughter; five great-grandsons; two god-daughters, Ernestine RIDDICK of Chesapeake and Gayle WHIDBEE of Moyock, N.C.; and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held Monday at noon in New Hope Baptist Church Virginia Beach by the Rev. E. Ray COX. Burial will be in Roosevelt Memorial Park, Chesapeake. BURNS ARE FATAL TO OSCAR L. HALL - Oscar Lucian HALL, 87, died Saturday night at 9:10 o'clock in the Albemarle Hospital after receiving burns Thursday morning at the E.R. Johnson store in Currituck. He was a native of Elizabeth City but had been a resident of Currituck for the past 50 years. He was the son of the late Lucian James and Sarah Melvin HALL and the husband of Mrs. Anna Leola HALL. He was a retired postmaster of Currituck, having served in that capacity for over 35 years. At the time of his death he was employed by the E.R. Johnson store. He was a member of the Pilmoor Methodist Church of Currituck. Besides his wide he is survived by one sister, Mrs. Lena Hall STEPHENS of Elizabethtown. Funeral services will be conducted Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock in the Pilmore Methodist Church by the Rev. R. Dennis RICKS, pastor. Burial will follow in the Bagley Memorial Cemetery. CHESAPEAKE - Rosalie HALL, 98, passed away Monday, September 30, 2013. Born in Currituck, NC, she was the daughter of the late William N. and Dixie Forbes HAMPTON. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Neily M. HALL; a sister, Thelma H. MUNDEN and two brothers, Alton and Harvey HAMPTON. Rosalie is survived by her a sister, Grace Hampton AGENT and many nieces and nephews. The family is deeply grateful for the care and support of the Allzwell Assisted Living staff and her special friend and nurse, Sylvia. MOYOCK, N.C., July 11 - Mrs. Sallie Smith HALL, 73, widow of James Western HALL, died at the home of her son, Edgar HALL, at Moyock, N.C. last night at 9:30 o'clock after an illness of six years. A native of Perquimans County, she had made her home here for nine years. She was a member of the Moyock Methodist Church and a daughter of the late James and Mrs. Mary Spivey SMITH. Surviving are one daughter, Mrs. J.C. JENNINGS of Norfolk; five sons, James HALL of Norfolk, Jarvis HALL of South Norfolk, Guy HALL of Richmond, L.T. HALL, SR. of Florida, and Edgar HALL of Moyock; two brothers, Charlie SMITH and Arcie SMITH, both of Elizabeth City; 13 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted tomorrow at 3 p.m. at the Graham Funeral Home, South Norfolk. Burial will be in Memorial Cemetery, Moyock. NORFOLK - Eva Melson Hampshire HALSEY, 97, was called home on Saturday, June 15, 2002. She was a resident of Norfolk and had formerly resided in the 4500 block of Larkin St. Born in Currituck County, N.C., Eva was a homemaker and completely devoted to her family. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, family and friends, and was affectionately called Granny or Nanny by many. VIRGINIA BEACH - Noted wildlife conservationist Robert O. HALSTEAD died Monday, Oct. 25, 2010, at his home in Virginia Beach. HALSTEAD was born in Munden, Va., in 1921. He grew up hunting, trapping, boating, and fishing on Back Bay and Currituck Sound. HALSTEAD served in the U.S. Navy, 1945-1946, and from 1947 to 1948, was a Virginia state game warden. In 1949, he began a distinguished law enforcement career with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. For more than 30 years, HALSTEAD was involved in virtually every aspect of wildlife management and conservation law. He was a strong advocate of federal and state programs to promote gun and boat safety, acquire critical wildlife habitat, and expand public opportunities for hunting and fishing. HALSTEAD frequently educated government officials and members of Congress about these issues during hunting and fishing trips. In 1970, HALSTEAD was awarded one of American Motors Conservationist of the Year Awards for developing and implementing programs teaching young people about wildlife. Halstead loved to hunt ducks and geese, with shotgun and camera. He said he had been born at just the right time to help enforce the Migratory Bird Treaty Act of 1918, which outlawed market hunting and laid the foundation for U.S. waterfowl sport shooting. As Federal Agent-in-Charge for North Carolina, he developed special expertise in waterfowl management. His responsibilities included bird banding and population surveys, and advising Washington on policy development, as well as law enforcement. Halstead specialized in undercover investigations to break up illegal commercial hunting for ducks up and down the Atlantic Flyway. In the 1970s, as a special undercover agent, operating nationally out of a fake business in Delaware, he deployed similar techniques to enforce the Endangered Species Act. He was well-known among his peers for actions against the illegal trade in eagle feathers and sea turtle jewelry, and for a landmark case against illegal trophy hunting for desert bighorn sheep. After retirement, HALSTEAD was revealed nationally as the "Undercover Wildlife Agent," based on James PHILLIPS' 1981 book by that title, about his major investigations in Alaska, California, Louisiana, and other states. For most of the past three decades, HALSTEAD was resident manager of The Flyway on Knots Island, N.C., a private hunting lodge owned by his longtime friends, former Congressman Ogden R. ("Brownie") REID, and his wife Mary Louise REID of New York. He was active in the Back Bay Restoration Foundation, an organization dedicated to improving water quality and wetlands. He was president of the North Carolina Salt Water Sport Fishing Association in the 1960s, and a member of Ducks Unlimited. He was a member of the Masonic Orr Lodge 104 of Washington, N.C., for half a century. HALSTEAD was a kind and generous man, beloved by family members and many special friends. He once said he learned the art of hospitality from his mother and the art of politics from his father. His door was always open to neighbors, hunting and fishing enthusiasts, conservationists, local community leaders, and elected officials. He was "Uncle Robert" to 20 nieces and nephews. He loved, and was loved by, his many dogs, including Brownie, Peppie, Rip, Bessie, and Mike, but especially Mim, a black lab he owned for 20 years. He was preceded in death by his mother, Malinda West HALSTEAD; his father, Roland O. HALSTEAD; his siblings, Mildred H. JOHNSON, W. Ray HALSTEAD, Hattie HALSTEAD, Helen H. CHESSMAN, Otto V. HALSTEAD, Rowland O. (Sonny) HALSTEAD, Mary H. LINDSEY, and Betty Mae HALSTEAD. He is survived by his sisters, Rosa H. GRIMSTEAD, and Florence H. WEIDMAN; his children, Barbara (Walter) HUMPHRIES, Suzanne (John) HOFFMAN, and Robert J. (Margaret) HALSTEAD; by six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren; and by Gus, his last dog. MOYOCK - Roland Otto "Dusty" HALSTEAD III, 52, of 107 Shark Street, Moyock, passed away unexpectedly on Sunday, June 6, 2010. Born in Norfolk, Va., he was the son of the late Roland Otto HALSTEAD, JR. and the late Nancy Waterfield HALSTEAD. He was a superintendent for Precon Construction Company, Chesapeake, Va. Mr. HALSTEAD was an avid outdoorsman and a great lover of life. He was a loving husband, father and friend to many and will be greatly missed. Survivors include his loving wife of 24 years, Patty Twiford HALSTEAD; his daughter, Keri Leigh HALSTEAD and fiancé, Marty WILLIAMS, JR., of Moyock; his sister, Cindy WHITEHEAD and husband, Glen, of Beaufort; brothers, Mark HALSTEAD and wife, Ashlyn, of Harkers Island and Matthew HALSTEAD of Beaufort; a step-mother, Jane HALSTEAD; step-brothers, Steve and Brian HALSTEAD, both of Charlotte; his faithful K-9 companion, Roxy; and his "granddog", Diesel. A memorial service will be conducted at 1 p.m., Friday, June 11, 2010 at the Great Bridge Chapel of Oman Funeral Home and Crematory, 653 Cedar Road, Chesapeake. MOYOCK - Denver Lee HAMILTON, 90, died August 12, 2012. Mr. HAMILTON was born in Esserville, VA to the late Leonard and Emma Provence HAMILTON. He was a veteran, having served in the U.S. Navy and later retired from Perry Buick. Mr. HAMILTON enjoyed bird watching and was an avid reader. He loved being around and caring for others, especially his grandchildren. He was the most honest, kind and sweet individual you would ever meet. Mr. HAMILTON was predeceased by his wife, Opal K. HAMILTON, children, Jimmy, Danny, Larry and Dennis HAMILTON and Mona CARL. Left to cherish his memory are his loving children, Saundra K. SCAFF and husband Walter of Moyock and Mark D. HAMILTON and wife Cynthia Myers HAMILTON of Barco; 24 grandchildren, 43 great grandchildren, and 1 great-great grandson.

Born in Jarvisburg, NC, she was the daughter of Sidney WRIGHT, SR. of Jarvisburg and the late Inez Morrisette WRIGHT. Besides her father, Mrs. HAMILTON is survived by her husband, Patrick HAMILTON of Kill Devil Hills, NC; a brother, Sidney WRIGHT, JR. and wife, Kim of Colington, NC; a son, Mark GIBBS and fiancé, Angela CASPER of Kill Devil Hills, NC; two daughters, Jacklyn H. SPENCER and husband, James SPENCER, JR. of Columbia, NC, and Sabrina HAMLITON of Creswell, NC; one very special granddaughter, Kayla SPENCER of Columbia, NC; and three very special friends, Pam JACK, Janie McCLEES and Paula SPEAR. BARCO - Opal Kathleen Bentley HAMILTON, 79, died Feb. 19, 2003 at Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. HAMILTON was born in Esserville, Va., to the late Martin and Martha Cordelia Shook BENTLEY. She was a homemaker who loved country music and was a past president of the Virginia Country Music Association of Chesapeake. Mrs. HAMILTON was predeceased by three sons, Jimmy, Danny and Dennis HAMILTON. Survivors include her husband of 63 years, Denver Lee HAMILTON of Barco; two daughters, Mona CARL of Duluth, Minn. and Saundra SCAFF of Moyock, N.C.; two sons, Larry HAMILTON of Moyock and Mark HAMILTON of Barco; two sisters, Cordelia WELLS and June HAMILTON both of Chesapeake; one brother, Martin BENTLEY of Chesapeake; 26 grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. CHESAPEAKE - Eleanor HAMLIN, 84, of Chatman Etheridge Road, Moyock, passed away Saturday, Dec. 11, 2010. Born in Norfolk, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Ella LAND. She was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, Raymond A. HAMLIN, SR. Eleanor will be remembered for her devotion to her family. She is survived by four children, Steve HAMLIN of Chesapeake, Frances Jane REYNOLDS of Spring Grove, Pa., Gary Lee HAMLIN of Currituck County, North Carolina, and Raymond A. HAMLIN, JR. of Moyock; six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Born in Currituck County, NC, she was the daughter of the late Robert and Margaret Virginia “Jenny” Rodgers WATERFIELD and was the wife of the late Floyd Chester “Bobby” HAMPTON, SR. Mrs. HAMPTON attended Poplar Branch Baptist Church. She is survived by a son, Joseph Lee ROBERTSON,, SR. and wife Margaret of Barco, NC; two step-sons, Fred HAMPTON and wife Shawn of Morehead City, NC and Floyd C. “Butch” HAMPTON, JR. and wife Kim of Elizabeth City, NC; a step-daughter, Linda WETHERINGTON and husband Bob of Chesapeake, VA; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and her husband, Mrs. HAMPTON was preceded in death by a daughter, Edith Gail BANKS; and a step-son, Robert Joseph “Joe” HAMPTON. AYDLETT - Clarence “Bucks” Henry HAMPTON, age 87, of 391 Narrows Shore Road, Aydlett, NC, died Thursday, February 14, 2008 on his sixty-sixth wedding anniversary at Norfolk Sentara Hospital. He was born in Currituck County to the late Henry Porter HAMPTON and Pearl Virginia O’Neal HAMPTON and was the widower of Christine Jones HAMPTON. He had retired from the Norfolk Naval Shipyard after thirty-six years. He was a US Navy Veteran of WWII, and a member of Grandy Assembly of God Church. CHESAPEAKE - Elizabeth Baum HANBURY, 88, died Nov. 4, 2008. She was the widow of Lawrence Jefferson HANBURY, SR. and the daughter of Renan Carlyle and Emma Patterson BAUM. She was a graduate of Florida Southern College and received her master's degree from The College of William and Mary. Mrs. HANBURY served the Chesapeake public schools, first as a teacher of English at Great Bridge High School, later as supervisor of English instruction, and the last 12 years of her career were spent as assistant principal for instruction at Indian River High School. Upon formation of the City of Chesapeake in 1963, she became the first president of the Chesapeake Education Association. In the late 1960s, she was president of District T of the Virginia Education Association. Upon her retirement in 1980, Mrs. HANBURY became interested in historical and genealogical research. She was the author of "Currituck Legacy: The Baum Family of North Carolina," which she described as a blend of northeastern North Carolina history and the history of the Outer Banks BAUM family. She also wrote "Getting to Pine Island," a work of historical fiction based on the Baum family diaries. In 1998, she revised and guided the republication of Elizabeth Baum WINGO's 1965 edition of "The Battle of Great Bridge" for the Norfolk County Historical Society. Mrs. HANBURY was a past president of the historical society and was the first regent of the Chesapeake chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was a member of the Board of Trustees of the Great Bridge Battlefield and Waterways History Foundation. At Centerville Baptist Church, she taught Sunday school and served as a deacon. She is survived by two daughters, Laura HODGES and Marianne OKAL and sons-in-law, James HODGES and Charles OKAL; one son, Lawrence Jefferson HANBURY, JR. and his wife Debbie; granddaughters, Elizabeth ROBSON, Susannah HOGGE, Rebecca DODELIN and Emily DeFIESTA; grandsons, Ben SHANABERGER and Jakob HANBURY; and four great-grandchildren. Callie Charlton HARDWICKE, 83, of Currituck, N.C., died at home Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001. She was born in Moyock, N.C., Sept. 8, 1917, daughter of the late Thomas and Lucy Old CHARLTON and was the widow of O'Ryan Stalvey HARDWICKE of Charleston, S.C. She was a member of the Pilmoor Memorial United Methodist Church in Currituck. Mrs. HARDWICKE graduated from Moyock High School in 1937 and received her BS in home economics from East Carolina College. She earned a master's degree from Columbia University in New York City, where she was the recipient of the Fund for Adult Education Fellowship and the Helen Judy-Bond Fellowship. She also studied at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y. Mrs. HARDWICKE was a leader in the field of home economics in North Carolina, South Carolina and Virginia. Her career of some 30 years included appointments as a teacher of home economics in Currituck, Cabarrus and Pitt Counties. She served as a home economics agent in both Pasquotank and Johnston Counties. She was later home economics agent for the Western District of North Carolina. Mrs. HARDWICKE then supervised the home economics agents in western North Carolina under the auspices of North Carolina State University in Raleigh. During her career, Mrs. HARDWICKE held a number of positions in professional associations including president of the North Carolina Home Economics Association, 1963 to 1964. Upon retirement in 1975, she returned to Currituck. Community service played a major role in Mrs. HARDWICKE life. She was a member of the Moyock Women's Club and the Currituck Historical Society. A great advocate of protecting the Outer Bank, she worked to restore Whalehead at Corolla. She also lobbied to limit vehicular traffic along the beach. Mrs. HARDWICKE was a member of the Moyock Baptist Church. After retirement she became a member of Pilmoor Memorial United Methodist Church. Her two daughters survive, Amy HARDWICKE of Currituck and Chicago, Ill., and Ryanee Hardwicke WHITECHURST and husband John W. WHITECHURST, JR. of Currituck. Graveside services will be private. On the evening of July 31, 2016, Tommy Baxter HARRINGTON, SR., 72, passed away surrounded by his family and friends, after a battle with pancreatic cancer. A memorial service will be held on Saturday at 4 PM in the Wilkerson Funeral Chapel. A small graveside service will be announced at a later date. Tommy was born in the small town of Shawboro located in Currituck County, North Carolina on June 30, 1944. He was the only child of Ephraim Tommie and Ethel Roberts HARRINGTON. Tommy is known for three loves in his life: computers, croquet, and his family. In the 1990’s, Tommy started his own computer training and programming company, CompuHELP, after leaving a long career in the banking and savings and loan business. He had the pleasure of working with many companies and individuals over the years. He gave computer lectures both nationally and internationally. Some have commented that Tommy’s love for the Excel program was “infectious”. In 2004, Tommy found his second love of professional croquet. He grew up watching his father and relatives play backyard croquet. In 2012, he played in the World Croquet Championships in Adelaide, Australia. Tommy was a member of the Meadow Mallets Croquet Club where he developed close and long-lasting friendships. He was ranked in both American and International rules. Tommy treasured his friendships and learned from his upbringing that you should treat friends like family. Tommy valued, most of all, his family. He was a loving father who would drop anything to spend time with his family. He was always the boastful father on the accomplishments of his children. They would often need no introduction upon meeting his friends and colleagues because of his preceding stories on them. Tommy lived by the motto that “Life is too important to be taken seriously” and hopefully he has influenced others to do the same. Tommy was preceded in death by his wife, Angela HARRINGTON. Tommy is survived by his daughters, Adrienne HARRINGTON and Daphne H. KNICELY and husband, Kevin; son, Tommy HARRINGTON, JR.; and grandchild, Crystal HOLDEFER. He was a retired bridge maintenance supervisor with the North Carolina Dept. of Transportation and served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Mr. HARRIS was a member of Jarvisburg Church of Christ. Besides his wife, he is survived by a son, William Arthur HARRIS of Durham, N.C.; a brother, Cecil HARRIS and wife Juanita of Chesapeake; a brother-in-law, Clarence BARBER of Chesapeake; a grandchild; and several nieces and nephews. Walter Etheridge HARRISON, 94, of 722 Winslow Street, Hertford, died Wednesday morning, March 16, 2011, in his home. Born in Spot, he was the son of the late William Spencer and Janie Etheridge HARRISON. He retired as a deputy with the Perquimans County Sheriff's Department and as Perquimans County Tax Collector. HARRISON was a former route salesman for Famous Foods of Virginia. He was a member of Hertford Baptist Church, Perquimans Masonic Lodge #106, New Bern Sudan Shrine Temple, the Bear Swamp Hunt Club and a charter member of Perquimans County Volunteer Rescue Squad. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Detterman HARRISON; two daughters, Barbara H. NIXON and husband, Ed, of Hertford and Paula H. McALLISTER and husband, John, of Warner Robbins, Ga.; five grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by sisters, Olive BERYLE and Sarah HAINES. He was born November 21, 1927, in Canton, Ohio, son of the late William and Dorothy Pearson HARRY. Mr. HARRY was a licensed Mariner, starting his career as an Apprentice Seaman in 1945, and retiring from the sea as a licensed Captain in 1981. BARCO - Floyd Reynolds HASSELL of Grandy died Sunday, Jan. 2, at Sentara Nursing Home in Barco. He was 76. Born in Washington, N.C., he was a son of the late Oscar and Mittie Ann Hassell HASSELL. He was retired from the NCDOT, was a member of the Grandy Assembly of God and served in the U.S. Navy and U.S. Army during World War II and in Korea. Surviving are his wife, Annie Dees HASSELL; four daughters: Shirley Marie CRANK of Harbinger, Helen Ann DIECK of Poplar Branch, Maude Eva WOODCOCK of Macon, Ga., and Diane Faye HALL of Wilmington; a son, Floyd James HASSELL of Grandy; a step-son, Jerry JACOBS, JR. of Fairmont; a brother, Herbert W. HASSELL of Ardore, Okla.; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a son, Willie Oscar HASSELL; a brother, Clyde HASSELL; and a sister, Maria BARNES. Charles HATFIELD, 68, of Myrtle Drive, a retired machinist, died Aug. 14, 1992, in a Greenville hospital. Mr. HATFIELD was born in Kentucky. He retired from Norfolk Naval Air Station and was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church and Currituck Ruritan Club. He served in the Coast Guard. Survivors include his wife, Annie Gibbs HATFIELD; and a daughter, Evelyn A. HATFIELD of Moyock. The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday in Rehoboth Baptist Church by the Rev. Frank THIGPEN. CURRITUCK - Retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. SC Floyd Albert HAWKINS died July 23, 2002. A native of Lake City, Minn., he was the son of the late Albert L. HAWKINS and Laura E. HAWKINS and brother of the late Vernon W. HAWKINS of Spokane, Wash. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, N. Hazel Saunders HAWKINS; a daughter, Judy WILKINSON and husband Gilbert of Chesapeake; a son, John HAWKINS and wife Janey; and five grandchildren, Heather, Lindsey, Tyler, Emily and Kelsey of Chesapeake; and a brother, Harold L. HAWKINS of Paradise, California. He retired with 30 years of service in the U.S. Navy and served during World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and in Cuba during the Bay of Pigs. His last assignment was as the officer-in-charge of the six Navy commissary stores in the Hampton Roads area. He was also employed by Smith Corona Marchant as National Military Sales Representative for the Division of Durkee Foods in Cleveland, Ohio. He helped to reorganize the Hampton Roads chapter of the American Logistics Association and served as president for several years. He was a member of Pilmoor United Methodist Church of Currituck. A funeral will be held Friday at 3 p.m. in the Twiford Funeral Home chapel, Elizabeth City. The family will receive friends after the service. Mary Leottie Wright HAYDEN, 94, died on May 25, 2014, in a hospital in Nassawadox following a brief illness. Born at Sligo in Currituck, NC on August 28, 1919, Mary moved to Norfolk, VA, in 1940 with her late husband of 38 years, retired Norfolk Firefighter Harry Robert HAYDEN. Mary was an active member of Miles Memorial United Methodist Church and of Girl Scouts of Colonial Coast for much of her life. She is survived by her daughter, Roberta H. SHERMAN of Franktown; and by her two granddaughters, Laura S. RUDMIN and husband Michael of Portsmouth, VA and Leesa A. SHERMAN-HOCHMUTH and husband James of Norfolk, VA; four great grandkids; and a host of nieces, nephews, and devoted friends. WANCHESE - Elton Terrance "Ted" HAYES, JR., 45, died Thursday, September 8 at his residence. Mr. HAYES, born in Currituck County, was a commercial fisherman and a Protestant. He was the son of Elton Terrance "Ted" HAYES SR. of Wanchese and Marion Gaimel DANIELS of Manteo. Besides his parents, Mr. HAYES is survived by a daughter, Jamie D. HAYES of Wanchese; two sons: Elton Terrance "Trey" HAYES, III of Wanchese and Storm Terrance HAYES of Richmond, Va.; one sister, Jeri H. "Fuzzy" HOLLIS of Wanchese; and two brothers: Harley D. James Iridell ``J.I.'' HAYMAN, 87, died at Albemarle Hospital on Sunday, March 31, 1996. Born in Pasquotank County, N.C., he was founder and retired owner/operator of J.I. Hayman & Son Building Supply Co., and a member and former deacon of Coinjock Baptist Church. Mr. HAYMAN was the husband of Angeline Morrisette HAYMAN of Coinjock and the son of the late Louis Lathan and Jennie Bailey HAYMAN, and is predeceased by a son, Jimmy HAYMAN. Besides his wife, he is survived by two daughters, Joan DUNTON of Coinjock and Eugene GENTRY of Gaithersburg, Md.; a son, Kenyon HAYMAN of North Wilkesboro, N.C.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was a member of the Coinjock Baptist Church and the Coinjock Ruritans Club. Mrs. Lillian Bell HENRIES, age 89, a resident of Washington, N.C., died Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville, N.C. A graveside service will be held at 2:00 Saturday at Pamlico Memorial Gardens in Washington, N.C. Mrs. HENRIES was born on November 13, 1913 in Shawboro, N.C. She married Leo Thomas HENRIES in 1931 who preceded her in death on November 30, 1960. Mrs. HENRIES was a retired waitress and had worked in several restaurants over the years. She had spent most of her life in the Beaufort County area. She had also lived in the Spring Creek community in Aurora for several years. Mrs. HENRIES is survived by one granddaughter, Delores POTTER of Washington; two grandsons: James POTTER of Pinetown and Robert POTTER of Chocowinity. Mr. HERD was a veteran having served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and the Korean War. He was the son of the late George P. and Adaline Kilpatrick HERD and the widower of Marie Audrey Trost HERD. She was born on May 3, 1914 to the late John Raleigh WRIGHT, SR. and the late Elma Gregory WRIGHT. Mrs. HERNANDEZ was the widow of the late Thomas Jefferson HERNANDEZ. She was a retired civil service employee having retired from Naval Air Station, Norfolk, VA. Mrs. HERNANDEZ was a member of the Freemason Baptist Church, Norfolk, VA.; an active member for many years of the Edgewater Garden Club, Kings Daughters Auxiliary and was a music lover who enjoyed entertaining her family and friends with her organ music. She and her husband enjoyed many years of membership at The Norfolk Yacht and Country Club. She is survived by one sister, Grace Wright GRIGGS of Point Harbor, NC. Although, Mrs. HERNANDEZ was never blessed with children of her own, she was a big part in the lives of her four nieces, Jane BRINKLEY, Peggy WRIGHT, JoAnn JAUNICH, and Donna DONOVAN and three nephews, Jerry WRIGHT, Tommy WRIGHT and Eddie GRIGGS. Also, surviving are several great nieces and great nephews. She was preceded in death by two brothers, John R. WRIGHT, JR. and Mark WRIGHT, and a nephew, John Raleigh WRIGHT, III. She will be dearly missed by her friends and caregivers, Janie WHITLOW and Sandra DAVIS. Earl HEWITT, 80, died June 29, 1991, in his home. Mr. HEWITT was born in Moyock and retired from Norfolk Naval Shipyard. He attended Grace Methodist Church and was a member and twice president of the Cosmopolitan Club. He was a member of the Founders Club for Norfolk Diabetes Center and a member of Pipefitters Local Union 272. He was the widower of Evelyn Sawyer HEWITT. Survivors include a daughter, Lois A.H. He was an excellent painter and a member and deacon at Rehoboth Baptist Church. Besides his wife he is survived by a daughter, Stacy WARD (Shannon) of Hertford, NC; a son, Neil Allen HICKS; two sisters; and a brother. CHARLOTTE - Mrs. Lou Ann Griffin HICKS, formerly of Charlotte, NC passed away October 7, at Davis Health and Wellness of Cambridge Village at Wilmington, NC. Mrs. HICKS grew up in Shawboro, NC establishing many lifetime friendships. She was captain of the Moyock High School basketball team and senior Class President. She attended the Governors Inaugural Ball, was elected Maid of Honor to the May Court and belonged to Sigma Phi Alpha while earning her Bachelor's in education at Meredith College in Raleigh NC. She taught in the Raleigh area until meeting the love of her life Charles Ray HICKS, JR. and moving to Charlotte, NC. A devoted wife and mother of two, she traveled extensively with her family, was an avid music enthusiast, loved meeting people and developed a great talent for recalling names. Her optimistic adventurous spirit was contagious. Her family is so grateful for the love, strength, and optimism she bestowed. The family would like to thank the loving staff of Davis Health and Wellness for their exceptional care and the volunteers who shared their time and talents, especially having the private music concerts in her room. A native of Norfolk, VA, she was the daughter of the late Travis Benjamin SPEARS, SR. and Barbara Webster ROZIER and husband Neil ROZIER of Chesapeake, VA. She was the widow of Leslie “Les” Eugene HICKS. She was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, and had lived in Moyock for thirty-seven years. She had worked at C. A. Howard and Associates as a receptionist. Besides her mother and step-father she is survived by a daughter, Stacy Hicks WARD and husband Shannon of Hertford, NC; a son Neil Allen HICKS, three sisters, Michelle WEBSTER of Virginia Beach, VA, Angela PADDON of Mouton, AL, and Cindy HEMMELL of Fairview Heights, IL; and two brothers, Eric SPEARS of Hertford, NC and Neil Lee ROZIER of Chesapeake, VA. VIRGINIA BEACH - Clara H. HILL, formerly of Covel St., Norfolk, and Middlewood Drive, Virginia Beach, passed peacefully into eternal rest on Aug. 14, 2004. She was a native of Currituck, N.C., born to the late Rufus and Eva Williams JOHNSON. She was also married to Alfred HILL. She was a faithful, dedicated member of New Hope COGIC for 39 years. She was at one time a co-owner of a beauty salon and she continued in her profession for many years and was well loved by her customers. She leaves to cherish her memory two grandsons, William A. MOYOCK - H. Everett HILL, 57, died June 13, 2004. Born in Hampton, Va. in 1947, he was a longtime resident of the Outer Banks of North Carolina. After graduating from high school in Hampton, he served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. Everett was senior sales manager at Barrier Island Resort in North Carolina. A lifelong musician, he spent many years in area bands, Bill Deal and The Rhondels, Fat Ammons Band, Express and others. Preceded in death by his father, Herman H. HILL, he is survived by his daughter, Lauren B. HILL; his longtime companion, Robin HOCUTT and her daughter, Nikki HOCUTT; his mother, Gertrude R. HILL; two brothers, Michael HILL, MD and David HILL; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in R. Hayden Smith Funeral Home chapel, Hampton with the Rev. John H. KNIBB, JR. and the Rev. M. Darren ANDERSON officiating. Katie Sue DOZIER-HILL, 69, of 7245 Caratoke Highway, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2018, at Sentara Albemarle Medical Center in Elizabeth City, NC. Katie was born in Elizabeth City on January 12, 1948 and was the daughter of the late Lawrence and Agnes DOZIER. Katie was a retired teacher from Currituck County Schools. She loved to play the organ and piano for church. She was a member of Mt. Zion Methodist Church. In addition to her parents, Katie was preceded in death by her brother, Charles H. DOZIER. Surviving are her children, Jennifer of Mooresville, NC and John and his wife Tammy of Barco, NC; sisters, Beth of Kitty Hawk, NC, Fey of Clearwater, FL, and Marlee DOZIER of Jarvisburg, NC; and four grandchildren, Jarrett, Jonathan, Trevor and Nolan. Other surviving family members are her brother-in-law Mike MIKLES of Clearwater, FL, brother-in-law Jim KENNY of Kitty Hawk, NC and nieces and nephews Darci, Liam, Heather, Jeff, Kenny and Mike. Katie has requested to not have a funeral service; however, the family will be receiving friends at her residence on Friday, January 12, 2018 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Katie was passionate about Currituck and the Outer Banks and she especially loved the wild horses in Corolla. Joyce Doyal HINES went home to be with her Lord on January 1, 2022. She was born on March 14, 1936, in Currituck County, NC to the late Benjamin Franklin and Francis Sawyer DOYAL. The youngest of eight children she was predeceased by her 7 siblings, Catherine D. JOHNSTON, Frank DOYAL, JR., Adair D. OXX, Laura Louise D. SPEIGHT, Sammie Carroll DOYAL, William “Billy” H. DOYAL, and Larry M. DOYAL. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Determined and independent, she was an avid master bridge player, world traveler, and gardener who also enjoyed thrift store shopping. Her kindness and generosity touched the many lives of her family and church family. She was a member of Powell’s Point Christian Church where she served local and distant communities through their women’s ministry. Although our hearts are heavy, we now celebrate her life and rejoice that she is now free from the cares of this world. Her hardy spirit inspires us to look forward with hope and peace. She was born in Onodaga County, NY; daughter of the late Luke and Nellie Furlong SESSLER and was the widow of Tod HINEY. She was a registered nurse, a member of St. Katherine’s of Drexel in Maple, NC, a graduate of St. Joseph’s Hospital Nursing School, and was 2nd LT in the U. S. Army during World War II. Mrs. HINEY is survived by three daughters, Mary Linda SHERRILL of North Glen, CO, Helen Marie SASSER of Portsmouth, VA and Catherine HINEY of Manns Harbor, NC; three sons, Tod Kenneth HINEY of Virginia, Timothy Luke HINEY of Maple, NC and Richard Paul HINEY of Prarieville, LA; a brother, Donald SESSLER of New York, NC; twenty two grandchildren, and nineteen great grandchildren. Cheryl HINSON, 53, of Moyock, NC went home to be with the lord, Tuesday, September 30, 2014. Cheryl was born on March 28, 1961 in Lexington, NC; she was the daughter of Betty ROSS and was predeceased in death by her sister, Sherri SMITH and her step-father, Ed ROSS. In 2007, she became a member of Northwest Baptist Church in Chesapeake, VA and was baptized by Rev. Michael C. SMITH that same day. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, friend to many and mother to all animals. She will be remembered and missed by the many people she touched along the way. Survivors include her loving husband, Tom HINSON; loving son, Greg & Melissa SHELLEY; grandchildren, Tiffany and Chrissy SHELLEY of Moyock, NC; and brothers, Russell & Tammy SMITH of Maryland and Chris & Wendy SMITH of Texas. A Celebration of her life will be held on Saturday October 4, 2014 at 7:00 PM at Northwest Baptist Church officiated by Rev. Michael C. SMITH. CURRITUCK - Agnes Melisa "Lisa" Williams HITE, 51, of 110 Currituck Sound Drive, died at her residence Saturday, Dec. 16, 2006. She was born in Portsmouth and was the daughter of Agnes Marie FULCHER of Frisco, N.C. Her father, Isaac James WILLIAMS, SR. and step-mother Theresa WILLIAMS, also reside in Frisco. She worked in maintenance at Sea Side Rental and had been a technical sergeant in the Air National Guard and was a member of Order of the Eastern Star Hatteras Island Chapter No. 303. Besides her parents, Mrs. HITE is survived by two sons, Ronald Lee McVEY, III and wife Jaclyn of California and James Ray McVEY and wife Jennifer of Georgia; one daughter, Cami Nicole GRAY of Frisco; one sister, Lori Ann EANES and husband James of Chesapeake; and one brother, Christopher Hayes WILLIAMS of Currituck. She was predeceased by one brother, Edward Patrick WILLIAMS. Other survivors include four grandchildren, Taylor, Ariana, Jillian and Jackson and a nephew, Matthew. Andy later moved to Oceana, W.Va., where he married his sweetheart of 49 years, Phyllis Jean "PJ" JOHNSTON. Andy and PJ made a life together in Oceana, then Norfolk, and finally in Bell's Island, N.C. He is survived by his wife, PJ; three daughters, Christy PARKER and husband Kevin, Teresa JOHNSON and Libby HINER; a son, Bill HINER; five grandchildren, Aaron, Daniel, Bryce, Megan and Katie. She was co-owner and operator of Hodges Service Station and Hodges Trailer Court. She worked at Lernes Shop in Raleigh and was a member of Powells Point Baptist Church. Ralph Henry HOLDER, II, 65 of 106 Camellia Drive, Moyock, NC died Wednesday, October 28, 2009, in the Chesapeake General Hospital. He was born on December 11, 1943 in Clarksville, TN to the late Ralph Henry HOLDER, SR. and Betty Johnson HOLDER. Mr. HOLDER retired from the US Navy as a Senior Chief after 26 years of service, having served in the submarine service. He was a member of the American Legion Post 288, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disable American Veterans and Fleet Reserves. He is survived by his wife of 39 years, Connie Rhine HOLDER of the home; a daughter, Jeanette (Jan) HOLDER of Moyock, NC; a son, Ralph Henry HOLDER, III, and wife, Lisa, of Flat, TX. Martha (Marty) Ward Woodhouse Blee HOLLAND departed this world in the presence of her family and friends to continue her life with Christ on 7/31/10. She was born February 15, 1956, the third daughter of Ben Ward BLEE, Capt., USN, Ret. and Martha Sumner WOODHOUSE. She grew up around the world, from Virginia to Singapore before settling in North Carolina , where she graduated from Jacksonville SHS and later received her Bachelor’s degree from East Carolina University and her Master’s degree from UNC-Chapel Hill. She began her career working with UNC Public Television, which remained one of her proudest achievements. While subsequently working in the agriculture department at North Carolina State University , she married G. Thomas HOLLAND, M.D. and together had two wonderful daughters, Amanda Jane Harmon HOLLAND, currently a sophomore at East Carolina University and Martha Elizabeth (Emmy) HOLLAND, a senior at South Brunswick SHS. Throughout her life her infectious smile, melodious singing voice, and easy-going manner earned her friendships which have lasted a lifetime. She always sought to improve the conditions of the world around her, whether teaching English to Japanese physicians, participating in political campaigns, or working with the FDA on improving ovarian cancer treatments for women. She was preceded in death by her mother Martha and her step-mother Elizabeth Woodhouse BLEE. She is survived by her husband Tom and their children Amanda and Emmy, two sisters Elizabeth (Betsy) BLEE of Tarrytown, N.Y. and Jane CREEL (husband Tom) of Fuquay-Varina, N.C., two sisters-in-law Sue RAYNOR (husband Jerry) of Hampstead, N.C. and Beverly HOLLAND of Wilmington, N.C., brother-in-law Robert HOLLAND of Jacksonville, N.C., three nephews, four nieces, six grand nieces and nephews, and an extended family which extends from Virginia , Delaware and New York to Ohio , Oklahoma and California . He was a US Army veteran of WWII and a member of Powells Point Baptist Church. He was the first president of the Olive branch Little League Baseball. He was the husband of Julia Campen HOLLAND of the residence and the son of the late Junius Walker and Iola Lewis HOLLAND. Beside his wife, he is survived by a son, Nathaniel "Jack" Walter HOLLAND, JR. of Richmond, Va.; four sisters: Blanche WEST of Smithfield, Va., Iola SAUNDERS and Garnell CHAPMAN, both of Chuckatuck, Va. and Junie V. SHAWBORO - Willard Cletis "Ace" HOLLAND, 77, of Shawboro, NC, died at his residence on Saturday, January 8, 2005 due to complication from Parkinson’s Disease. Mr. HOLLAND was born October 19, 1927, in Franklin, NC, son of the late Radford and Sarah McCoy HOLLAND, the “baby” of fourteen children, all now deceased. He was a veteran of WWII, and the Korean and Vietnam conflicts. After retiring from the U.S. Navy as a Senior Chief Radioman, Ace was a car salesman for seventeen years at Phillips Lincoln-Mercury. Ace is survived by wife Bonnie Boyd HOLLAND, daughter Lorraine (Jerry) EASTER, grandchildren J.W. (Carol) and Patty (Rickey) and former wife Patricia, all of Chesapeake, VA. Also many nieces, nephews and cousins in the Franklin, NC area. A memorial service will be conducted Tuesday, January 11, 2005 at 11:00 AM at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel, with the Rev. NORFOLK - Virgie HOLLIDAY died Oct. 24, 2003, in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. Born in Moyock, N.C., she was a retired elevator operator. Survivors include her husband, Willis M. HOLLIDAY of Norfolk; cousins, Belva RIVERS, Bessie JARVIS, Rita SNOWDEN, Frank Kenneth TILLETT and Sherman TILLETT, all of Norfolk, Mary HODGES of Portsmouth; and a host of other relatives and friends. A funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Carlos A. Howard Funeral Home, Norfolk Chapel, by Bishop Anthony Earl MOSES. Burial will be in Watson's Cemetery. PORTSMOUTH - Ruth H. HOLLOMAN, 92, went home to be with our Lord April 13, 2005. Born March 12, 1913, in Moyock, N.C., she was a member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church. She was a loving and giving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She is survived by her husband of more than 66 years, Marion HOLLOMAN; two sons, V. B. "Toby" HOLLOMAN and wife Dolly of Chesapeake and Henry F. HOLLOMAN and wife Sandy of Portsmouth; a special brother-in-law, Clarence W. EVANS and wife Margaret of Portsmouth; special sister-in-law, Lucille P. HARRELL of Chesapeake; three grandchildren, Vann B. HOLLOMAN and wife Amy of Portsmouth, Cary H. William “Bill” F. HOLLOWELL, JR. 66, of 171 Coinjock Canal Road, Coinjock, NC died Saturday, February 19, 2012, in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Chowan County, NC on November 6, 1945 to the late William F. HOLLOWELL, SR. and the late Mary Evans HOLLOWELL. He was a member of the Jarvisburg Church of Christ. Mr. HOLLOWELL was a retired carpenter and also a former service representative for Clayton Mobile Homes. Mr. HOLLOWELL is survived by his wife, Linda Austin HOLLOWELL of the home; three daughters, Amy HOLLOWELL and Charity KUEBLER both of Virginia and Connie CHASE of Coinjock, NC; two sons, Clifton P. HENRY and wife, Amanda, of Hertford, NC and Erick HENRY and wife, Susan, of Aydlett, NC. Also, surviving are three sisters, Nell DALE of Chowan Beach, NC, Ann HUNTER of Hertford, NC and Jeanette HOLLOWELL of Virginia; one brother, Robert Lee HOLLOWELL of Hertford, NC; and 15 grandchildren. BARCO - Jeri Lee HOLM, 56, of 104 Travis Court, Barco, died at his residence on Tuesday, Jan. 4, 2011. He has gone home and is celebrating with the Lord. He will be greatly missed by all. Born in Washington, D.C., he was the son of Craige Granniss HOLM and Willa Wolf HOLM of Needmore, Pa, and the husband of Cynthia Ann Klose HOLM of the residence. He was a radio disc jockey and a member of New Life Christian Fellowship of Currituck. Besides his parents and wife, he is survived by a daughter, Krista Faith HOLM; a son, Marshall Craig HOLM; a sister, Wendy Holm AKERS; and a brother, Joe HOLM. Mattie M. HOLT, 86, former owner and operator of the Southern Beauty Schools and worked for Southern Beauty Supply, died January 29, 1994, in a Virginia Beach hospital. Willie Garnel HOLT, SR., 82, of 110 Launch Landing Road, Moyock, NC died Monday, November 12, 2018 at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He was born November 19, 1935 in GA to the late Asa Nathaniel HOLT and Mary Willie Taylor HOLT and was the husband of Gloria Jean Langley HOLT of the residence. He was the owner and operator of W. G. Holt Septic and a Baptist. In addition to his wife he is survived by a daughter, Darlene Holt LEMONS (Bradley) of Moyock, NC; a son, Willie G. HOLT, JR. (Mary Ann) of Jefferson, IN; six grandchildren, Bradley Jr., John Jr., Megan, Wyatt, Erica, and Jacob; and two great grandchildren, Jase and Khloe. He was predeceased by a daughter, Beverly Jean JESCH; and two brothers, Emory Jackson HOLT and Earl Nathaniel HOLT. Lelia E. HOLTON

CHESAPEAKE - Lelia E. HOLTON, 87, of the 1300 block of Bells Mill Road, was called by God and ushered by angels into heaven Friday, Nov. 19, 2010. Lelia was born in Moyock, N.C., and resided in Chesapeake since 1953. A mother to five children, she was active in the Cub Scouts, Boy Scouts and was assistant Brownie leader. She was Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star, Great Bridge Chapter No. 155 from 1974 to 1975. Lelia loved to crochet and made dozens of baby blankets for her grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchild, as well as other expectant mothers. If she saw an expectant mother in her church, she would make a baby blanket to wrap the baby for the trip home from the hospital. Lelia and her husband were members of the Holiday Ramblers Recreational Vehicle Club and in their motor home have traveled in 49 states, Alaska, Acapulco, Mexico, Eastern and Western Canada. As snow birds for more than 36 years, they spent six months in Virginia and six months in Florida, Arizona, or Texas. For recreation, Lelia and O.T. were square dancers, having danced in many of the states they traveled, as far north as Anchorage, Alaska, and as far south on a cruise ship in the Caribbean Sea. Lelia was a faithful member of Great Bridge Baptist Church and made her Sunday morning attendance priority one. She knew Jesus as her Savior. Even when she fought illness, her faith was strong and unwavering in God's mercy and love. Lelia is survived by her loving husband of 69 ½ years, O. T. HOLTON, JR.; five children, O. T. HOLTON, III and wife Dora, Harvey F. HOLTON and wife Brenda, Darlene BAIN and husband Jim and twins, Martin W. HOLTON and wife Tammy and Marie L. PEPE and husband Daniel; 11 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. The love Lelia had in her heart for her family will never die, it will multiply and will live in the hearts and minds of her children, their spouses, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren for many generations to come. She will be missed, but never forgotten. May God grant unto her the heavenly blessings of the spiritual world. With His love and mercy, comfort and strengthen those who suffer in her passing. Mrs. HOOPER was a member of Riverside United Methodist Church and had worked at Supak Textile Company. She is survived by two daughters, Imogene H. WINSTON-SALEM - Hazel Mayes HOOPER, 86, died at Oak Summit Nursing Center in Winston-Salem on Monday, November 24. A longtime resident of Elizabeth City, she moved to Winston-Salem following the death of her husband four years ago. Mrs. HOOPER was born December 27, 1916 in Norfolk County, Va. She was partner in her husband's wholesale business in Elizabeth City. She was a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church in Elizabeth City where she served in numerous capacities including primary Sunday School superintendent, Baptist Women's president and as a member of the bell choir for over 20 years. She was awarded the N.C. Federation of Women's Club Albert C. Berry Cup for Best Narrative Poem in 1947. She spent a lot of time at the family home on the Outer Banks. Preceding her in death was her husband of 59 years, J.A. "Mickey" HOOPER. Survivors include three daughters: Nancy Hooper GWYN and husband Paul of Winston-Salem, Jane Hooper SPRAGUE and husband David of Blacksburg, Va., and Alice Hooper Moore COLLINS of Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.; five grandchildren: Ted MOORE and wife Julie of Jacksonville, Fla., Tom MOORE of Kill Devil Hills, David GWYN and wife Lisa of Raleigh, Kelly Gwyn DIAMOND and husband Jeff of Bethesda, Md., and Marya Gwyn UPCHURCH and husband Charles of Charlotte; and seven great-grandchildren. Julian Aydlett HOOPER

Julian Aydlett HOOPER, a longtime resident and local merchant, died Tuesday night, Sept. 7, 1999, at his home in the 1800 block of Rivershore Road. He was 83 years old and had had Parkinson's disease for many years. Mr. HOOPER was born in Currituck, N.C., to the late Franklin and Nancy Baum HOOPER. He moved with his family to Elizabeth City when he was a young child. After receiving a business degree from Louisburg College, which he attended on a baseball scholarship, Mr. HOOPER played professional baseball during the Depression years. As a catcher, he acquired the name ``Mickey'' which stuck with him for the rest of his life. He was a lifelong local merchant, having opened an office supply business in the Virginia Dare Hotel Arcade in 1937. He later diversified the business, becoming a distributor of fishing tackle and other sporting goods, as well as wholesale paper products. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Marine Corps. Mr. HOOPER was a Mason and a member of Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church. Also, he was an avid salt water fisherman, and a member of the Albemarle Anglers' Club. Other interests included major league baseball, of which he was a loyal Atlanta Braves fan, and oil painting, which he took up after his retirement. Survivors include his wife of 59 years, Hazel Mayes HOOPER; three daughters, Nancy GWYN of Winston-Salem, N.C., Jane SPRAGUE of Blacksburg, Va., and Alice COLLINS of Duck, N.C.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and his dog, Podge. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday in Blackwell Memorial Baptist Church by the Rev. Dr. Bob CRISP. Burial will be in Westlawn Memorial Park Cemetery. Immediately following the service, the family will return to the residence to receive friends. Michael Darrow HORN

Michael Darrow HORN 66, of Currituck, NC passed away on December 24, 2023. He was born on December 9, 1957, in El Monte, California in Los Angeles County. Michael is survived by his sister, Suzanne HORN and a slew of cousins, relatives, and life-long friends in Currituck, NC. Michael was preceded in death by his Mother, Virginia J. HORN and his father, Richard K. HORN. Michael graduated from Knapp High School in 1976. He then attended COA in Elizabeth City, NC where he completed accredited coursework. From there, Michael took a maintenance position with the Town of Nags Head. After a few years, Michael moved on to a better job with the Department of Commerce N.O.A.A. in 1982. Once hired with N.O.A.A., Michael became and engineering technician. In that role, he travelled along the coast from Maine to Texas and the Great Lakes, attending survey markers and tide stations. Michael retired July 13, 2013. He read avidly and was a history expert. The rest of his days were spent at home with family and friends. Suzanne has honored Michael’s preference for cremation. Michael Darrow HORN completed his Earthly mission naturally December 24, 2023 at his Moyock home. Michael was 66 years old. He was a long-time federal employee with NOAA. Mike was also an avid reader, a history expert, and Civil War re-enactor for many years. Mike’s surviving relatives include his loving, patient and devoted sister E. Suzanne HORN also of the Moyock home and several cousins and close friends. Suzanne is honoring her brother’s directives for cremation. Richard Kelly HORN

MOYOCK - Mr. Richard Kelly HORN, 95, departed this shore for the next in Barco, NC February 9, 2020. Born into a military family in the Portland Oregon area, he was the son of the late Captain Richard HORN and the late Doris HORN. The family travelled extensively raising Richard and his siblings in several states including Washington, Illinois, and Utah. Besides his parents, Richard is preceded in death by his wife, Virginia, and his two siblings. Eventually, Richard followed in his father’s footsteps and enlisted- joining the Navy and serving honorably in WWII. Following his military career, Richard was hired by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a nuclear electrician- a position he eventually retired from. Richard is survived by his daughter, Suzanne HORN and his son, Mike HORN- both of Currituck, NC; and his sister, Barbara BACON of Bellingham, WA as well as other extended family members. A viewing will be held at Gallop Memorial Chapel in Barco, NC Thursday, February 13, 2020 from 6 pm to 8 pm. Barbara Yeip HORNBROOK, age 66, of Jarvisburg, NC died on Monday, September 5, 2022 at her home. Born in Miami, FL on December 5, 1955 to the late Arthur YEIP and Margery Dahlhausen YEIP, she was the beloved wife of James “Jim” HORNBROOK. Barbara loved horses, spent years as a trainer and was well known in the Currituck horse community. She was a Real Estate Investor, co-founder of the Albemarle Antique Power Association, and served as secretary for that organization for the first seven years. In addition to her husband, Jim she is survived by two sisters, Elaine YEIP and Marcia YEIP; and a brother, John YEIP and his wife, Jennifer. Mary Ann Scott HORRELL, 74, died July 4, 2000, in Albemarle Hospital. Mrs. Horrell was born on Jan. 8, 1926, in Gallenton County, Ill., to William Ford SCOTT and Mary Edith Ramsey SCOTT. She was married to Thomas H. CLAWSON from 1947 to 1965 and later married Ray Douglas HORRELL. They moved to Elizabeth City in 1970. Mr. HORRELL died in 1999. She was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mrs. HORRELL was active in the artistic community as a visual artist. She was a charter member of the Studio Gallery and displayed her works in local competitions and galleries. She was an active artisan with Watermark since 1982 creating many unique craft items in various media. Mrs. HORRELL is survived by a daughter, Cathy Ann PARTNER and husband, William, of Salt Lake City, Utah; a son, Michael Scott CLAWSON and wife, Dorothy, of Anchorage, Alaska; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. Norita Baker HORTON, age 94, of Camden, NC died Monday, February 7, 2022 at her residence. She was born in Currituck County, NC to the late Daniel G. BAKER and Ella SAWYER. POINT HARBOR – Mrs. Nettie Beasley HOSKINS, 85, of Point Harbor, died Oct. 2 in the Albemarle Hospital in Elizabeth City. She was a native of Virginia and was the daughter of the late Jack and Martha Eubanks BEASLEY. She was a homemaker and a member of the Powells Point Baptist Church. Surviving are her husband, Hazel HOSKINS of the home; three daughters: Elizabeth HARRIS and Gladys NEEDHAM, both of Powells Point, and Kathleen LORENZ of Grandy; one son, Herbert Lee WATERFIELD of Elizabeth City; one half-sister: Pearl MARMADUKE of Woodford, Va.; one half-brother, Dick BEASLEY of Philadelphia, Pa.; 11 grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild. Harry Winston HOUCHINS, 92, died Monday, March 8, 1993, in Sentara Nursing Center, Barco. Mr. HOUCHINS was born in Richmond, Va., and was retired from C&P Telephone Co. after 45 years. He was a member of Salem Baptist Church in Crozier, Va., a life member of the C&P Telephone Pioneers and a member of Joppa Masonic Lodge (NU)40. He was the widower of Mabel Boatwright HOUCHINS. Survivors include two daughters, Wray H. GRUMIAUX of Kitty Hawk and Judy H. WIGHTMAN of Placentia, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. AYDLETT- Alice Fay HOURMOUZIS, age 69, left her temporary residence here on Earth to reside at her permanent home in Heaven on August 12, 2021. Alice was preceded in death by her brother, Glenn HOPKINS and her parents, Eugene and Fay HOPKINS. Alice was the wonderful sister of three brothers, Jerry HOPKINS (Robin) of Barco, NC, Roy HOPKINS (Linda) of Harbinger, NC, and Eddie HOPKINS of Florida and she was very happily married to Sam HOURMOUZIS, her husband of 29 years, of the Aydlett residence. Also surviving are her nieces and nephews, April, Kayle, Aaron, and John. Alice was a compassionate lover of cats all her life, especially the one she left behind, “Caroline”. She had many friends from all over and never made an enemy. Her life is a wonderful example of a dedicated wife, daughter, sister, and most of all “Christian”. Flora Lawson HOUSKA, native of Currituck County and longtime resident of Tidewater, passed away Jan. 12, 2008. She was the daughter of Capt. Robert C. LAWSON and Mary Combs LAWSON. Mrs. HOUSKA was preceded in death by her husband, retired U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Joseph R. HOUSKA; her daughter, Katherine A. HOUSKA; and her brother, Elbert C. LAWSON. She is survived by her son, Joseph Lawson HOUSKA and wife Judy; five grandchildren, Betsy and Howard TAYLOR, Holly and Damon WYLER, Amanda and Dr. Fredrick RICHBURG, Toni and Sean LEAR and Larry and Trish ELDRIDGE; eight great-grandchildren; and a nephew, Roger C. and Joanne LAWSON. A graduate of Maury High School, Mrs. HOUSKA studied art under renowned sculptor Polia in Richmond. She was an accomplished portrait artist and at one time was an artist for the U.S. Army at Fort Belvior, Va. She was a member of Powell’s Point Christian Church. MOYOCK - Nolan Ray HUFFMAN, 72, of Moyock, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2004 in Albemarle Hospital. He was born in Oklahoma, the son of the late Mary and Wilburn HUFFMAN. Mr. HUFFMAN was a retired MGY sergeant for the U.S. marines, which he served in both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his retirement, he enjoyed spending time with his horses and other animals. CAMDEN, NC - Lillie Sanderlin HUGHES, age 92, of Camden, NC, died Friday, October 21, 2005, at her residence. She was a native of Currituck, NC, daughter of the late John Wesley SANDERLIN and Roxie Pierce SANDERLIN, and was wife of the late Clyde C. HUGHES. She was a former member of Perkins United Methodist Church, and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church. She is survived by one daughter, Jo Ann TRUEBLOOD of Camden, NC; two grandchildren, Todd TRUEBLOOD of Camden, NC, and Joey TIRAK of Charlotte, NC. Mrs. HUGHES was the thirteenth child of nineteen children. She was predeceased by ten sisters and eight brothers. A funeral service will be held Sunday, October 23, 2005, at 1:00 PM in Twifords Memorial Chapel, 405 East Church Street, Elizabeth City, NC, with the Rev. David COMBS officiating. Burial will follow in the West Lawn Memorial Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6:30 PM to 8:00 PM. At other times the family will be at the residence. Willis A. HUGHES

On Aug. 4, 2003 at the age of 93, Willis A. HUGHES went to be with the Lord and his beloved wife Lettie. Dad was born in Currituck, N.C. on Feb. 20, 1910 to Charles HUGHES and Joann Croonenberghs HUGHES who immigrated to America from Hasselt, Belgium; he was one of their 10 children. Dad retired from Virginia Beach city schools after 38 years as supervisor of transportation having started his career as a school bus driver and bus mechanic. He was one of the oldest members of London Bridge Baptist Church and a member of the John Stone Bible Class and at one time served on the Board of Trustees. Dad was a charter member of the London Bridge Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Antiques Club and the Echoes Choir. He was an avid fisherman and in his younger days, raced boats and piloted his own plane well into his seventies. He leaves behind two daughters, Joann, wife of Howard SAVAGE of Mason Neck, Va. and Bernadette, wife of Al HARRIS of Virginia Beach. He also leaves behind five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Visitation will be at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Neck Chapel, Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Dad's funeral will be held at London Bridge Baptist Church at 1 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Clarence Lee HUMPHREY, JR., 85, died Sept. 24, 1991, in a Currituck nursing home. Mr. HUMPHREY was born in Waterloo, Ala. He had retired from the Navy after 30 years and from civil service. He was a member of Rehoboth Baptist Church, Fleet Reserve and the Retired Officers Association. Survivors include his wife, Gladys Morse HUMPHREY; a daughter, Ida Mae H. Bettie West Charlton HUMPHREYS, 91, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, Dec. 13, 2015 in Nassawadox, Va. She was devoted to her family and loved each one with all of her heart. Born in Moyock, NC, she was the daughter of the late Richard O. and Mabel Hatcher WEST. She was preceded in death by her husbands, Harry W. CHARLTON and George B. HUMPHREYS; 3 brothers, Benjamin H. WEST, Dennis E. WEST, and R. Robert WEST; a sister, Barbara Ann WEST; and her grandson, Thomas W. LEIGH, JR. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Bettie C. LEIGH and husband, Thomas; a granddaughter, Amy D. PREWITT; 3 great grandchildren, Austin and Madison LEIGH, and Spencer DEAVER; and 2 great great grandchildren, Owen and Hunter LEIGH. Barbara Halstead HUMPHRIES

VIRGINIA BEACH - Barbara Halstead HUMPHRIES, 70, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family on Monday April 16, 2012. Barbara was born October 30, 1941 to the late Robert Otto HALSTEAD and Louise White LAND. She was raised in Princess Anne County and lived in Virginia Beach most of her life and was a graduate of Princess Anne High School. Barbara was married to Walter Lee HUMPHRIES her husband of more than 50 years. Barbara went to work in 1968 with VEPCO (Dominion Power) where she held many different positions over the years, the last being in the Regional Operations Center. She retired in 2000 after more than 30 years of service as she began her long courageous battle with breast cancer. After her retirement Barbara and Walter built a home at Knotts Island, NC where they resided upon her death. Barbara was Past Worthy Matron of Virginia Beach Chapter #75 OES, past board member of Back Bay Restoration Foundation and a member of Ducks Unlimited. Along with her husband Walter, she is survived by their daughters, Sharon H. CLARK and her companion Bob WALKER of Virginia Beach and Beth HUMPHRIES-JACOBS and her husband Tim of Mapleton, IL. Grandchildren, Jason and Matthew WARD of Virginia Beach, Amanda PALMORE of Minonk, IL, Justin MARTIN of Knotts Island, NC, Nicholas and Jenna WOERNER of Magnolia, IL and 2 great-grandchildren Arilynn and Avram. She is also survived by her siblings Bobby HALSTEAD of Madison, WI, Suzanne HOFFMANN of Kennett Square, PA, Susan CRUZ of Virginia Beach and Nancy WILLIAMSON of Annapolis, MD, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother Sidney H. WILLIAMSON. The family would like to thank Dr. STEINBERG, the staff at Virginia Oncology Associates and Albemarle Hospice for the care that has been provided during Barbara's courageous fight against cancer. MOYOCK – Garland Francis HUMPHRIES, 83, died March 3 at his residence. He was a native of Woodville, Perquimans County, the son of the late James and Margaret HUMPHRIES and was the husband of Winnie West HUMPHRIES of the home. He was a member and deacon of Moyock Baptist Church and had retired from the Bank of Currituck Board of Directors. He and his brother were owners and operators of Humphries Brothers Lumber Company. He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Diana FEREBEE of Shawboro; 5 grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Graveside services were held Friday in Moyock Cemetery by the Rev. Vic Ramsey. Marie Elizabeth HUMPHRIES, 95, passed away peacefully on March 28, 2004. She was born in Currituck County, N.C., May 8, 1908, to the late Phillip Jefferson and Mary Sudie Cotter HUMPHRIES. Miss HUMPHRIES was a longtime resident of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach. She retired from Ingrams Pharmacy more than 20 years ago, where she had worked for many years. Marie leaves behind many nieces and nephews. Miss HUMPHRIES was preceded in death by her four brothers, Charlie (Jack) HUMPHRIES, John HUMPHRIES and Richard (Dick) HUMPHRIES, Walter S. ELIZABETH CITY - Odessa HUMPHRIES, 96, died on Tuesday, October 14 in Guardian Care Nursing Home. She was the daughter of the late Will and Sudie ETHERIDGE and was the widow of Richard HUMPHRIES. She worked in many local homes as a nurturing and loving nanny. She was a member of the New Providence Missionary Baptist Church in Shawboro. She is survived by a cousin, Sarah SIMONS of Moyock; two grandsons: Vaughn WALSTON of Moyock and Kenneth WALSTON of Shiloh; one great-grandson, Betrand WALSTON of Moyock; and many relatives and friends. Funeral services will be held on Sunday, Oct. 19 at 2 p.m. in New Providence Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. John FELTON. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. KNOTTS ISLAND - Walter Sampson HUMPHRIES, 92, of Knotts Island and formerly of Bonney Road in Virginia Beach, passed away peacefully Jan. 22, 2004, at home surrounded by his family, Born in Currituck County, N.C., May 20, 1911, to the late Phillip J. and M. Sudie Cotter HUMPHRIES, he was the widower of Minnie Lee Alexander HUMPHRIES. Walter was a longtime resident of Princess Anne County and Virginia Beach. He retired from the City of Virginia Beach in 1966 from the Department of Streets and Bridges where he served for more than 25 years as superintendent. He continued his career as purchasing agent and yard supervisor at Contractors Paving until 1983 when he permanently retired. Mr. HUMPHRIES leaves behind two sons, Walter Lee HUMPHRIES and his wife Barbara of Knotts Island and Daniel J. HUMPHRIES and his wife Judith of Isle of Wight, Va.; and a sister, Marie E. HUMPHRIES of Virginia Beach. He is also survived by two granddaughters, Sharon H. CLARK of Virginia Beach and Elizabeth (Beth) WOERNER of Magnolia, Ill.; and a grandson, Patrick A. HUMPHRIES of Isle of Wight; eight great- grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. Mr. HUMPHRIES was preceded in death by his three brothers, Charlie (Jack) HUMPHRIES, John HUMPHRIES and Richard (Dick) HUMPHRIES; and a sister, Stenie Humphries STONE. MOYOCK - Winnie West HUMPHRIES, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great- grandmother, of the 200 block of Shingle Landing Road, died Friday, June 17, 2011 in the Currituck House Assisted Living. She was born Sept. 21, 1917, the daughter of the late Anthia and Wallace WEST and was the widow of Garland Francis HUMPHRIES. Mrs. HUMPHRIES was a lifetime member of Moyock Baptist Church and was devoted to her family. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Humphries FEREBEE and husband James H. FEREBEE, JR.; five grandchildren, James H. FEREBEE, III and wife Ellen and their two children Harrison and Garland; Joel Humphries FEREBEE and wife Amy and their three children Grace, Elizabeth and Thomas; Winnie Ann VERNON and husband James Edward VERNON, II and their two children Jimmy and Sydney; Crystal Ferebee TROTMAN and her daughter Krista; and Eric Garland FEREBEE and wife Karen and their four children Lindsey, Joel, Hannah and Shae; and one great-great-grandson, Waylon DARLING. The family would like to thank all the staff at the Currituck House for their devoted care, Community Hospice for their loving care and support and Linda COY for her devotion to Winnie. Cassie Belle Waterfield HUTCHINSON

KNOTTS ISLAND - Cassie Belle HUTCHINSON, 82, died January 4, 2012. Mrs. HUTCHINSON was born in Knotts Island to the late Wendell and Sallie Cason WATERFIELD. She was a member of Knotts Island Baptist Church where she had taught Sunday School for many years and served as the custodian for 30 years. Mrs. HUTCHINSON, or Mrs. Cassie as she was better known, was a past President of the Knotts Island Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, had been active in the PTA, and the Knotts Island Ruritan Club, where she was known as the "Queen of fried peach pies" during the Peach Festival. She enjoyed cooking, canning, crocheting, and most of all caring for others. Mrs. HUTCHINSON had a heart of gold and was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many of her children's and grandchildren's friends. She was predeceased by her husband Royal "Hutch" HUTCHINSON and a son, Johnny HUTCHINSON. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Brenda HAMMAKER of Virginia Beach and Kathy AYDLETT and husband, Vance, of Knotts Island; grandchildren, Mandi CONNER, and husband, Chris, Jason ROACH, and wife, Stephanie, and Sabrina AYDLETT, and fiancé, Jason; great grandchildren, Christopher and Madisan CONNER and Jon-e AYDLETT; her very special companion, her sweet Chihuahua, Prissy; and all those who knew her and were touched by her kindness and love. Royal HUTCHINSON

KNOTTS ISLAND - Royal “Hutch” HUTCHINSON, 86, went to be with his Lord and Savior February 22, 2008. Mr. HUTCHINSON was born in Appling County, GA to the late Jenny Carter and William Franklin HUTCHINSON. He is also predeceased by his son, Johnny HUTCHINSON. Mr. HUTCHINSON was a member of Knotts Island Baptist Church where he became an ordained deacon in 1977. Hutch served his country in the United States Coast Guard where he earned the rank of Chief before retiring. Upon his retirement Hutch began a career as a commercial waterman for some 25 years because of his love for the water. He later became a charter member of the Back Bay Chapter of the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Hutch also was a charter member of the Knotts Island Ruritan Club. He was a founding member of the Knotts Island Fire Department where he was a past Chief. In 1996 Hutch was elected Knotts Island Community Citizen of the Year. Hutch was loved by all who knew him. He knew no stranger and his generosity was known by all who met him. He will be missed. Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 60 years, Cassie Waterfield HUTCHINSON; daughters, Kathy L. AYDLETT and husband Vance, and Brenda H. HAMMAKER; sister, Winnie DOYLE; brothers, Lanis HUTCHINSON, Way HUTCHINSON, and Billy HUTCHINSON; grandchildren, Mandi and Chris CONNER, Jason and Stephanie ROACH, and Sabrina AYDLETT; and great-grandchildren, Christopher and Madisan CONNER.
