MRS. REBECCA HAYMAN – We have several times heard this good lady spoken of as the oldest person in North Carolina. She lives in Currituck County near Kittyhawk by the sea side. We applied lately to her son, Daniel HAYMAN, for facts and proofs as to her age. In a letter just received from Capt. HAYMAN he says: "I think my mother is 120 years old. She has a great-grandchild who is 19 years old. Her oldest son is 80 years old. She is in good health, does her washing, cans, and lately has walked 5 miles in a day. Her mind is sound and she is always in place at the table. She is a little bent from age." [Kay's note: Rebecca is listed as age 66 in 1850 and age 91 in 1870. The 1880 Mortality Census for Dare Co. states her age as 115 but the 1880 Mortality Census for Currituck Co. states her age as 100 which is probably close to correct. Rebecca died in Nov. or Dec. of 1879 depending on which Mortality Census you use.]

About 7 o'clock today when everything was quiet and the sun was just setting there seemed to be 2 men, a woman and 4 children and an old poor horse seeking shelter for the night. They forded a swamp 4 miles and made their way to Church's Island, a distance of 40 miles where they were overtaken by Mr. OVERTON, the husband and father. SPRUILL was accompanying them back and was undoubtedly the most horrid looking specimen of humanity that has passed through here in many a day. Mrs. Ann KIGHT, an aged lady of this township, after a lingering illness of several weeks, died at her residence on the 9th inst. She was the widow of Dempsy KIGHT who was one of the bravest and most patriotic sons of Currituck. In the summer of '63 the Federal Steamer Maple Leaf sailed from Fort Monroe with 160 prisoners on board bound for Fort Warren. All of these prisoners held a commission in the Confederate Army. When outside Cape Henry they rebelled and overpowered the guards and took charge of the steamer. They ran down the beach about 35 miles then ran her on shore at or near Wash Woods. There were a few who were too sick to be landed so they could not destroy the vessel but they bound the Captain under oath to take care of their sick comrades and not to report the affair for 3 days. When flood tide made he backed the steamer off and proceeded to Fort Monroe where he reported the affair. The Confederate officers were safely transported across Currituck Sound and secreted in the swamps of Currituck before sunrise the next morning. These officers found many friends in Currituck, among whom was Dempsy KIGHT. He was engaged in carrying provisions to them while they lay concealed in the swamp which he had to do in a boat and at night time. On one of these missions he was captured by the Federals who were scouring the country in search of escaped prisoners. At the time of his capture he had one of the officer's overcoats in the boat which caused the Federals to believe he knew their hiding place. He positively refused to tell anything. The Federals began torturing him by suspending him in the air with a rope around his neck until he was almost dead. The torture was repeated and after recovering the third time he leaped into the canal. They dragged him out of the water with grappling hooks and they asked why he had jumped overboard. His answer was that he believed they intended to torture him to death and he would rather drown than betray his countrymen. The Federals released him and he went home to his wife. In his remaining years, which were but few, he never was heard to speak of his capture.

Mr. Thomas FORBES of Poplar Branch, Currituck County, froze to death.

Jerome OUTLAW arrested and taken back to Currituck County.

Trades Wife  For Fishing Nets - They Thought Fair Exchange - No Robbery
Several days ago, Deputy Sheriff Raper arrested Jerome Outlaw and his wife here on a warrant from Currituck county, charging them with unlawful cohabitation and alleging that they had never been married.  The couple were taken back to Currituck county and the trail took place yesterday.  They were both found guilty but the circumstances surrounding the case were so peculiar that they were released.
It seems that the woman was the wife of Outlaws brother and the brother for some reason had become somewhat tired of the bonds of wedlock and after some negotiations with Jerome and for a consideration of two fish nets, transferred to him his wife, two children and all love and affection that might have existed.  The transfere was made in good faith by them in the light of any other trade that might have been made and nothing was thought of it.  Mr. Outlaw and supposition, Mrs. Outlaw moved the place of their habitation to this city but the good sheriff of Currituck had become apprised of the facts in the transaction and thought it was a little irregular according to the legal light he had and accordingly had the couple brought up for trail.  It is said by those who witnessed the trail that it was decidedly the most amusing of any that has ever been held in the county.  The couple were not aware that they had committed any wrong and thought that the consideration was sufficient.  The other brother had wrapped his fish nets about him and departed for unknown parts and in view of the small children that were dependent upon some one for support the couple were released but if they wished to live together they will have to go through the marriage ceremony.  [Article submitted by Shirley Gray Outlaw]
