On this 29th day of August 1832 personally appeared in open Court before Caleb Etheridge, John B. Jones, William Bray, and Benjamin T. Simmons,  and  Justices of the Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions, now sitting Hosea Ball a resident of Currituck County and the State of North Carolina, aged seventy five years who being first sworn according to Law doth on his oath make the following declaration in order to obtain the benefit of the Act of Congress passed June 7th 1832.
He saith that he volunteered and joined Captain Nathan Poyners company in November 1775 and marched to the Great Bridge in Virginia and joined the army, then under the command of General Woodford and was under his command at the time of Fordyces defeat and after that engagement returned to Currituck, N.C. & was discharged & now has his discharge dated 12th December 1775.  He further says that on the 31st day of August 1776 he enlisted a private soldier in Captain John Jarvis company in said County of Currituck and was stationed on the Currituck Banks for one year and four months and was discharged on the 28th of January 1778 by the Captain of the Company, and yet has his discharge ready to produce when and where directed.
The company was raised and stationed on the Banks pursuant to an Act of the General Assembly of the State of N. Carolina for guarding the Coast of the state.
He further states that about the last of December 1779 he was drafted in said County as Ensign in Captain Thomas Poyner's to go to Charleston as far as Kingston North Carolina where I was ordered back to Currituck to bring on the delinquents and hasten the late draft on to head quarters.  After performing this service I marched out with my command under Colonel Samuel Jarves and the men under

my command were placed in Comr. Alexandria Whitehalls Company and I was made Quarter Master in Col. Jarves' Regiment and marched to Pede River in North Carolina where we heard of Gates Defeat, which prevented our going on to join him.  We then marched up the County and Joined the Army under command of General Jethro Sumner and remained in or near Salisbury & Charlotte in North Carolina untill the time of our draft expired & was then discharged on the Yadkin in Rowan County in the last of October 1780 & returned home for the service he has his commission as Ensign and can prove it by Lieutenant Jarves.  He further states that he was drafted under the State authorities on the 10th May 1781 and marched in Captain William Goodmans Company to South Carolina and joined the Army under Command of General Green at the place where the Town of Columbia now stands and was in the battle at the Eutaw Springs where Captain Goodman was killed.  I was then placed under Command of Captain Benjamin Bailey untill the time of Service expired and was discharged & has lost his discharge and has no documentary evidence but can prove that he was drafted & left the County with the Company & returned when the Company discharged.  This I can prove by Colonel Thomas Poyner.
He hereby relinquished all claims whatever to a pension or annuity except the present and declares his name is not on Pension Roll of the Agency of any State.
Sworn & subscribed the day and Year Aforesaid.
