Currituck County, NC Wills & Estates
Some Early Administrators' Bonds

From N. C. Office of Archives and History
Secretary of State Series XIX Record Keeping: Probate
Administrators' Bonds 1685-1779

Note: This group consists of twenty boxes of records filed alphabetically by last name of decedent, and includes records from various precincts and counties which existed in North Carolina between 1685 and 1779. Included in the abstracts below are administrators' bonds for those decedents whose folders are labeled "Currituck County." The dates of these bonds range from 1713-1759.
There are also quite a few folders in this group labeled "unknown county." Where I am reasonably certain that a decedent whose county or precinct was not stated did live in Currituck, I have included the abstract here with the note "no county given." There are very likely others from Currituck whom I did not include because I didn't feel knowledgeable enough about them to make the call. By the same token, I could be mistaken about some that I did include, so please use the "no county" entries with caution.
A number of these estates were administered by women. In some cases it is explicitly stated that the administratrix was the widow of the decedent. In these cases, I have made a note to this effect.
These are original records which contain original signatures and as such can be very helpful when trying to distinguish between two individuals of the same name. Many people signed with marks. I have represented signature marks with a generic "(x)" because I am unable here to reproduce many of the unique marks used at the time.
