John Doxey - 1886
[This was a very lengthy estate and not all items are abstracted here.  See his will here.]

24 Nov 1884 - Renouncement of Right to Administer.  Sarah J. DOXY states that she is not able to administer on the estate of the late John DOXY and wants John F. GRAY to administer.  /s/ Sarah [x] DOXY

24 Nov 1884 - Administrator's Oath.  John F. GRAY swears that John DOXEY is dead and that he will administer on his estate according to law.  /s/ J.F. GRAY

24 Nov 1884 - Probate of Will.  A paper writing purporting to be the last will and testament of John DOXEY, deceased, is exhibited before me, the undersigned Judge of Probate for Currituck County, by John F. GRAY & C.M. BRAYR.E.L. SIMMONS, one of the subscribing witnesses, states that A.O. DEY, the other attesting witness, has removed from this state and is now a resident of the state of Virginia.  Wm. H. BRAY and J.M. WOODHOUSE attest to DEY's signature.  /s/ H.B. ANSELL Clerk Superior Court

4 Jan 1886 - Petition to Sell Real Estate for Division.  J.F. GRAY & wife, et.als.  The undersigned Special Commissioner appointed on Nov. 10, 1885 to make sale of the tract of land in the petition and described as the tract of land in Currituck County, Crawford Township on which John DOXEY resided at the time of his death, containing 210 acres and adjoining the lands of Isaac BRIGHT, A.O. EDSON and others, respectfully reports that after advertisement, he proceeded on Monday, Jan. 4, 1886 at 121/2 o'clock at the Court House door of said county, to sell the tract of land at public auction at which time J.J. BAXTER made the last and highest bid of $900.  The attendance of said sale was large and the price obtained for the property was deemed a fair one.  The purchaser complied with the terms of sale by paying down $300 in cash and giving his notes for the remaining $600 payable on one, two and three years after date with interest.  Title is retained to secure the payments of the future installments.  /s/ L.D. 7 June 1886 - Notice to File Exception to Report.  J.F. GRAY and wife Matilda, Chas. M. BELL and wife Lydia B., Grandy DOXEY, David SAWYER and wife Emily, Pirus GEORGE and wife Mary vs. Enoch W. DOWDY and wife Florence, and James MATHIAS.  You will take notice that the report of Commissioners appointed to sell the lands named in the above action, has this day been filed in my office, whereupon you are hereby notified to file exceptions if you so elect within the time limited by law.  /s/ H.B. 28 Jan 1889 - J.F. GRAY and wife vs. E.W. DOXEY and wife and others.  The undersigned Special Commissioner appointed to sell the lands in the petition and who sold the land and made report which was confirmed begs leave to make this supplemental report, to wit:
    That since the sale he discovered what he did not know before that John DOXEY, whose land was sold under order of Court as the land of one dying intestate, but he did not, in fact, die intestate, but died testate leaving a last will and testament which was duly admitted to probate and record is in the Clerk's Office of the Court.  He further shows that the property of the testator passes by his will to the same persons who are his next of kin except as to a certain small portion thereof.  He further shows that the funds from the sale shall, for the most part, remain in his hands because the distributees have not called for any part of it.  Under these circumstances, the undersigned places himself in the hands of the Court and asks instructions as to what he shall do, as he does not feel authorized to proceed further.  He therefore prays the Court to make such order in the premises as to right and justice shall appertain.  /s/ L.D. 4 Mar 1889 - J.F. GRAY and wife vs. E.W. DOXEY and wife and others.  This cause came on this day to be heard and upon the petition or report of L.D. STARKE filed on Jan. 28, 1889, and it appearing that John DOXEY left a will which is duly of record, and that the said will devises the land sold by L.D. STARKE under a former order of this Court.  The Court orders L.D. STARKE to distribute the funds now in his hands, after payment of the expenses of sale, to the several parties who under the will are entitled to the same.  /s/ H.B. ANSELL, CSC

7 Sept 1889 Norfolk, Va. - Received of L.D. STARKE, Special Commissioner, $41.40 in full of share and interest in the proceeds of the sale of the land of John DOXEY, dec'd.  /s/ Grandy B. DOXEY

12 Sept 1889 - Received of L.D. STARKE, Special Commissioner, $20.70 in full of the balance of the share and interest in the proceeds of the sale of the land of John DOXEY, dec'd.  /s/ D.W. SAWYER, Amanda E. SAWYER

26 Sept 1889 Norfolk, Va. - Received of L.D. STARKE, Special Commissioner, $82.25 in full of share and interest in the proceeds of the sale of the land of John DOXEY, dec'd.  /s/ Pyrous A. GEORGE, Mary A. GEORGE

[NOTE: In one of the records it states that John Doxey died "on or about the 10th day of November 1884".]
