Timothy Bowden - 1891

13 Jul 1891 - Complaint for Dower.  Caroline BOWDEN, plaintiff, against Wilson COOPER & wife and others, defendants.  Plaintiff states that Timothy BOWDEN lately domiciled in Currituck County died on or about [blank] leaving her as his widow and the following heirs at law: Lydia COOPER, Caroline FLORA, Ann M. ETHERIDGE, John BOWDEN, Saml. BOWDEN, Ivey BOWDEN, Maggie BOWDEN, Nancy BOWDEN, the children of John BOWDEN, decd, & of Patsy DOZIER, decd, whose names are unknown to the plaintiff, Eliza WATERFIELD, Timothy BOWDEN, Mary BEASLEY, Eliza GRIMSTEAD, Wm. T. BOWDEN, Joakim BOWDEN, and Emma HARRIS; that at the time of his death, Timothy BOWDEN was seized & possessed of the following lands on Knotts Island--the home tract bound on the east by Fresh Pond Bay, south by the land of Ferdinand BONNEY, west & north by the lands of Caleb ETHERIDGE, containing 9 acres.  Also one swamp tract bound on the north by Ferdinand BONNEY, east by the Goose Pond, South by Walter CAPPS and west by the Great Marsh, containing [blank] acres; that PollY BOWDEN left many years ago and has not been heard from in over 10 years and is supposed to be dead & without heirs, she having never married; that the heirs of John BOWDEN, decd, and of Patsy DOZIER, decd, are all of age living out of the state and have conveyed their entire interest in the said Timothy BOWDEN estate to E.D. BOWDEN; that Timothy BOWDEN, Mary BEASLEY, Eliza WATERFIELD, Eliza GRIMSTEAD, Wm. T. BOWDEN, Emma HARRIS and Joakim BOWDEN have also conveyed their interest to E.D. BOWDEN so that E.D. BOWDEN now owns 9 shares or 9/17 of said estate and Lydia COOPER, Caroline FLORA, Ann ETHERIDGE, John BOWDEN, Saml. BOWDEN, Ivy BOWDEN, Maggie BOWDEN & Nancy BOWDEN each own 1/17 of said estate; that Maggie & Nancy BOWDEN are infants without guardian; that plaintiff is entitled to dower in the said lands; that 1/3 (in value) of said lands, including the residence, should be allotted and set apart to her for the term of her natural life and that a guardian ad litem should be appointed to defend said infants in this matter.  /s/ PITTMAN & SHAW, for Plaintiff

14 Aug 1891 - Summons for Relief.  Caroline BOWDEN against G.W. WILLIAMS, guardian ad litem of Nancy & Maggie BOWDEN.  Sheriff to summon G.W. WILLIAMS to appear in Court 20 days after being served & answer the complaint.  /s/ H.B. ANSELL, Clerk Superior Court

5 Sept 1891 - Appointment of Commissioners to set off Dower to Caroline BOWDEN, widow of Timothy BOWDEN.  /s/ H.B. ANSELL

not dated - Report of Commissioners Allotting Dower.  Commissioners met on the premises of the late Timothy BOWDEN on September 19, 1891 and proceeded to allot to his widow, Caroline BOWDEN, 1/3 in value of the lands belonging to her deceased husband including the buildings.  Commencing at the water's edge at the lane in Ferdinand BONNEY's line, westerly down the lane 152 yards, thence a northerly course across the field 110 yards to the Zachariah WATERFIELD tract, thence east with said tract 152 yards to the water & Bay, thence southerly along the Bay 1221/2 yards to the first station, containing 31/2 acres.  This is the dower in the cleared land.  We also allot petitioner a privilege in the woodland in the swamp for firewood, rail timber and for other uses.  /a/ Albert J. 13 Mar 1899 - Application of Guardian.  Enoch GARRENTON states that Nancy GARRENTON (nee BOWDEN) is an orphan without guardian and that her estate is worth about $25.33 and that he is her husband and is entitled to Letters of Guardianship on her estate.  /s/ Enoch GARRENTON (his Guardian's oath followed)
