1819

[Some dates appear to be going backwards but these dates are exactly what's written in the minutes.  Page 225 starts "Wednesday June 2 1819" that is the same date until . . page 229 which starts "May Term Tuesday 1st day of June 1819 and the bottom of page 230 has Thursday June 3d 1819]

Wednesday, June 1st, 1819

    Ordered that Sally Gregory orphan of James Gregory dec'd be placed & bound as an apprentice to Malachi Forbes & wife Betsey until she arrives to the age of 18 years she being now about 11 years.
    Ordered that Wm. Maddison Walker child Prucella Walker dec'd be placed & bound an apprentice to Henry Evans until be arrives to the age of 21 years he being now about 15 years the 4th day of May 1819.
    The Last Will and Testament of Burrus Mathias dec'd. was exhibited in open court & proved by the oath of John W. Hughs one of the subscribing witnesses at the same time Chloe Mathias Executrix therein named qualified as such.
    Ordered that Anthony Douglas Morgan child of Patsey Morgan be placed & bound as an apprentice to Mary Douglas until he arrives to the age of 21 years he being now about 7 years to learn the coasting business and to give him two years education if he learns Third.
    Ordered that Barnabee Case child of Patsey Case be placed & bound unto Hugh Gaylord until be arrives to the age of 21 years he being now about 18 years of age to learn the trade of a Black Smith &c and entered into bond with Thomas Douglas and Adam Etheridge securities in the sum of £500 not to transport Barnabee Beasley.
    Ordered that Jacob Midgett be appointed constable in the South Banks district for the present year who qualified as such and entered into bond with Peter Bradey and Silas Farrow securities in the sum of £500.
    Ordered that Betts Gordon daughter of Kisiah Gordon be placed & bound unto Henry Evans until she arrives to the age of 21 years she being now about one year old Christmas 1818 to learn a womans employment who entered into bond with Spence H. Gregory & John Grives securities in the sum of £500.
    Ordered that Saunders Bowser son of Polly Bowser be placed & bound as an apprentice to Warren A. Douglas until he arrives to the age of 21 years he being now 13 years to learn the coating business &c who entered into bond with Joseph Harrow and Thos. Douglas securities in the sum of £500 not to transport the said Saunders Bowser.

    Ordered that Edney Bell guardian of the orphans of Branson Bell have until next term to complete their guardian a/c.
    Ordered that Betty Richards child of Jean Richards be placed & bound as an apprentice to Edmond Gray until she arrives to age to learn a womans employment who entered into bond with Thomas Jarvis, Thomas Lindsey securities in the sum of £500.
    Ordered that Wm. B. Etheridge be appointed Guardian to Sally Etheridge orphan of Nathan Etheridge dec’d who entered into bond with Adam Etheridge and Jeremiah Etheridge & securities in the sum of £4000.
   
Ordered that Wm. S. Etheridge have the right of admr. on the Estate of Polly Dough dec’d. who Qualified as such and entered into bond with Jeremiah Etheridge and Thomas Douglas securities in the sum of £1500.

    Ordered that Anthony Simmons be appointed Guardian to Polly S. Corvan in the room & stead of Thomas C. Ferebee the former Guardian who entered into bond with Brickhouse Bell & Thomas C. Ferebee securities in the sum of £500.

    Ordered that the same men reaudit  the a/c of Michael Simmons as adm. of John Stephens dec’d. & report thereof to next term that made the first a/c &c.

    Ordered that Jas. Poyner guardian to his own children have until next term to complete his guardian a/c.

    Ordered that Jones Thomas Baxter audit the a/c of Thomas Baxter as Excr. Of Frances Halstead dec’d. & report.

    Ordered that Dennis Dozier Guardian to Lindseys orphans have until next term to complete his guardian a/c &c report.

    Ordered that Thomas Sanderson, Thos Poyner, Wm. White and Wm. Caffee or any 3 of them audit and settle the a/c & vouchers of Charles Griggs as admr. of Wm. Weskitt dec’d. orphan of Stephen Weskitt dec’d. with said dec’d. Estate & make report thereof to next court.

 Ordered that Gideon Bonney have leave to keep an Ordinary at his now residence who entered into bond with Wm. Capps and Wm. ____.

 Ordered that Wm. Litchfield be appointed Constable for the Knotts Island District who entered into bond with Gideon Bonney and Wm. Capps securities in the sum of £1000.

 Ordered that Charles Griggs adm. of Thomas Griggs dec’d. have until next term to make return of his a/c.

 

May Term - Tuesday 1st day of June 1819

    The court proceed to the Election of a sheriff for the present year where Isaac Baxter appeared as a candidate for the appointment and was then unanimously elected sheriff for the County of Currituck Justices Present to wit.

Justices Present

    Ordered that the Sheriff prepare and cause to be added in a proportional manner public stocks and a whiping post at Currituck Courthouse made of good materials by next court and be exhibited his a/c for the same at the next court.

    Ordered that Samuel Ferebee senr. furnish standard weights & measures for the County of Currituck and that he exhibit his a/c for the same to the next Court.

 

August Term - Thursday, Sept. 2, 1819

    Ordered that Abagail Tillett be allowed the sum of $24. the 1st year, $20. the 2d do $16 do 3rd $12 4th $8 for 5th year $4 the 6th do and $4 the 7th do for the maintenance of Cynthia Green seven years old the 7th day of March last and the same amounts for the maintenance of Bowen Green who was 3 years old December 24th last, both bastard children begotten on her body by Bowen Green decd.

    On petition filed &c on motion it is ordered that Edward Hardy as admin in right of his wife Lydia on the Estate of Thomas Bray dec’d. audit settle & sell on a credit of six months as many of the slaves belonging to the said dec'd. estate as should be sufficient for the payments of the debts now due from the Estate & that this adm.  make report of such sale to next court.
