 John Thomas Hampton Cemetery
Waterlily, NC

Although this cemetery has always been known as the "Hampton Cemetery" on Church's Island, an evaluation shows the oldest tombstone in the cemetery to be that of John Thomas Hampton, son of James H. W. & Elizabeth O'Neal Hampton.  John Thomas died June 29, 1884 and his wife, Nancy, died June 9, 1907. 

Other tombstones of significance were [1] David W. Hampton, brother of John Thomas, died Sept. 15, 1898   [2] Melissa Hampton Smith, daughter of Dempsey W. & a cousin of John Thomas, died June 4, 1885   [3] J. J. [James Josiah], son of Dempsey W. & a cousin of John Thomas, died after the 1900 census   [4] Nancy J., daughter of J. J. & a cousin of John Thomas, died Nov. 9, 1892.  It should be noted that Dempsey W. was the brother of James H. W. and the uncle of John Thomas.

Directions: From US 158  southbound after crossing the Joseph Palmer Knapp Bridge in Coinjock, make the first left onto Waterlily Road [SR1142], and go 4.4 miles.  The cemetery is located on the left side of the road.

W. & Mary Elizabeth Caffee [Second view] - [2008 Memorial] NOTE: The Caffee Cemetery was originally on the southeast corner of property owned by George Wilson and Mary Elizabeth Dowdy in Grandy.  The land, located south of the Poplar Branch Baptist Church, was left to his only living child, Eugene Ballance Caffee.  In 1920 Eugene sold the land to Cleveland Aydlett [Deed Book 58; pages 505 - 507].  During the late 1950's, afraid that the farmers would destroy the cemetery, Eugene had the remains disinterred, including the remains of his maiden aunt [Martha Jane Dowdy], and reinterred in the Hampton Cemetery at Church's Island.  Although the Caffee's were not directly related to the Hampton family, Eugene's first cousin, George V. Simpson, married into the Hampton family.  George V. Simpson, son of William & Wealthy Ann Caffee Simpson, married Mary Alice Smith, daughter of Dempsey & Melissa Hampton Smith and granddaughter of Dempsey W. Hampton.
