Generation No. 1

1. THOMAS2 COLLINS (JAMES1) was born 1718 in Probably Perquimans Co., NC, and died Aft. 28 July 1778 in Cumberland Co., NC. He married ANNARITTA MINGE 25 January 1742 in Chowan Co., NC, daughter of JOSEPH MINGE and RACHEL WARD. She was born Abt. 1725.

         i. JOSEPH3 COLLINS.
2.      ii. FRANCES COLLINS, b. Abt. 1755, Cumberland Co., NC; d. Pendleton District, SC.
         iii. JAMES COLLINS, b. Abt. 1758; m. TEMPERANCE VINSON.

2. FRANCES3 COLLINS (THOMAS2, JAMES1) was born Abt. 1755 in Cumberland Co., NC, and died in Pendleton District, SC. She married RANDOLPH HUNNICUTT1,2,3 03 March 1767 in Cumberland Co., NC, son of JOHN HUNNICUTT and JEMIMA ROWELL. He was born 14 January 1747 in Surry Co., VA4, and died Bet. 1833 - 1834 in Pendleton District, SC.

Notes for RANDOLPH HUNNICUTT:

Randolph Hunnicutt's birth is recorded in his father's Family Bible as 14 January 1747. At that time his father is thought to have still be residing in Surry Co.,VA.

Randolph purchased land in Cumberland Co., NC, in 1773 and made his residence there. In 1779 he was appointed Overseer of Road Repairs for Cumberland County. This civil service during the American Revolution may be used by his descendants for membership in DAR, SAR and CAR. It was first established by J. V. Michael Motes as a supplemental lineage in the National Society Sons of the American Revolution [NSSAR #91863] in November 1999.

On 27 March 1792, he was granted 371 acres of land in Abbeville District, SC, located on Beaver Dam Creek. This was followed by an additional grant of 371 acres in Pendleton District, SC, 5 November 1792. Both of these grants were surveyed in 1801 by James Milwee. On 22 March 1766, he received a grant of 762 acres on 26 Mile Creek of the Savannah River, Ninety Six District, SC. He also left behind papers showing that he owned land in Jackson Co., NC.

He is shown as a resident of Pendleton Co., SC, in the first Federal Census of 1790 and continues to appears in the census returns of 1800, 1810 and 1820 in Pendleton. In the 1830 census, he is listed as a resident of Anderson Co., SC, where he died during the winter of 1833-1834.

In the 1850 Census of Anderson Co., SC, she is the widowed head of household.

       iii. WILLIAM HUNNICUTT7,8, b. 1779, Probably Cumberland Co., NC; d. 1853, Near Seneca, SC; m. ELIZABETH YOUNG, 1802; b. Abt. 1786; d. Abt. 1850.

Notes for WILLIAM HUNNICUTT:
Conflicting birth dates of 1779 and 1784 have been found, as well as conflicting death dates of 1853 and 1862. He and his wife were first buried in the Hunnicutt Cemetery near New Hope Baptist Church, six miles north of Seneca, SC. Their remains were later moved to Stamp Creek Baptist Church. Little is known of him other than he lived and farmed in the area where he was first buried.

       iv. SARAH HUNNICUTT8, b. 19 March 1779, Cumberland Co., NC; d. 07 April 1869; m. WILLIAM ENTREKIN9.

William Entrekin served as a Revolutionary War soldier. Both he and his wife are buried at Hopewell Baptist Church, near Seneca, SC.

Notes for JAMES HUNNICUTT:
James Hunnicutt was a school teacher and first taught in Banks Co., GA, before moving to Rabun County.

On 6 June 1819, James Hunnicutt addressed a letter to his father, "Mr. Randolph Hunnicutt, South Carolina, Pendleton Dist." and began the letter, "Dear Father." [Reference: Unpublished manuscript, "A Genealogical Sketch of the Hunnicutt Family in America" by Leila Hunnicutt de Jarnette, copies presented in notebook form to her grandchildren, 1935, pages not numbered. Letter from John R. de Jarnette to Michael Motes, 10 June 1960, discusses his grandmother's work and includes copies of the manuscript. The letter from James Hunnicutt was not copied other than as given in these notes.]

He is first mentioned in Rabun Co., GA, records in 1838. when he bought lots number 23 and 24 in the town of Clayton on November 30, 1838. This land was purchased from George Lutes. On 9 February 1839, he bought Lot No. 27 in the town of Clayton from the Justice of the Inferior Court. On 21 October 1852, he bought 250 acres of land in the Second Land District and "distinguished by the number 49." The last tract of land he bought consisted of 50 acres in the Second Land District and "distinguished by the number 50." This transaction was dated 12 January 1854. These lots, numbers 49 and 50, were the property of his son, William McEwen Hunnicutt, as recorded in the 1869 Rabun County Tax Digest.

He died as a result of a rattlesnake bite. He and his wife Catherine are buried in Clayton, Rabun Co., GA.

Notes for JEHOIDA HUNNICUTT:

Like his brother, James Hunnicutt, Jehoida was also a school teacher. He is listed in the 1850 Census of Union Co., GA, age 50 with wife Nancy, age 45, and children Amanda, age 23, Warren, age 18, Madison, age 15, William, age 11, Albert, age 7, Robert, age 3 and Floyd, age 1, all of whom were born in North Carolina.

In a letter dated 31 August 1955, Mrs. Kate Hunnicutt Deavors (granddaughter of Jehodia Hunnicutt's brother James) written to J. D. Hunnicutt, one of the first to extensively research this family, she states that Jehoida lived near Lavonia in Hart Co., GA, and was the father of Towers Hunnicutt who married Frances Ash and that they were the parents of the noted Methodist minister, the Reverend Warren Towers Hunnicutt.
