JOHNSON
I am hoping that someone may have information on a JOHNSON family in Cumberland County prior to 1889. My grandfather, John Matthew Johnson was born there about 1889. His mother's name was Huldah Ann. I do not know his father's name. Grandfather had 3 sisters-Katie, Lena, and unknown (this child was handicapped in a wheelchair and died in her youth); Alexander was his only known brother. Sometime in the late 1800s or early 1900s this family relocated from Cumberland County to New Havover County in the Wrightsville Beach - Seagate Area. Any information or hints on researching this question would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jack Baugh    Posted December 31, 2000

Looking for information on the following families that may have come from Cumberland Co, NC: OVERBY, SENTER, and CAMPBELL. Merritt OVERBY b. NC married Mary SENTER b. 26 Apr 1837 (I found a marriage of a Meret OVERBY to a Elizabeth A. SENTER dated 11 Mar 1848 Cumberland CO. Is this the same couple? Merritt and Mary had a daughter Margaret E. OVERBY b. 26 Apr 1857 Harnett, CO who married a Neill CAMPBELL. Any help on these three families would be great!

McNEILL / BROWN
I did a search on IGI for my ancestors: Malcom and Mary McNEILL, and the records stated that they are both buried at "Mill Place" S. of Rockfish Creek, 2 miles E of US 301. Mary died in 1826 in The Bridge, Cumberland, NC.
I have not been able to locate either of these places on the map I have of NC. Can you all point me in the right direction? I can find Rt 301, but nothing else.
I am also trying to trace Elizabeth McNeill, (daughter of Malcom and Mary) who married Duncan BROWN ca 1807. She was born ca 1785 and died ca 1855. The first child that I can locate is Daniel Brown, born ca 1817. I'm trying to figure out why there is a 10 year lapse between marriage and first child; most likely they had children between 1807 and 1817 who did not survive. Elizabeth is my ggg grandmother, and I am trying to document the Brown line that is specific to my family.
Any, all information or leads will be most appreciated.
Thanks in advance, to everyone. Barbara Brown Hootman    Posted November 29, 2000

BRUCE
The 1800 census index for Cumberland County lists William Bruce (twice). The William Bruce I am looking for was born in NC about 1789. I don't know his parents at this time. He was married in GA in 1819 and lived in Beford County TN per the 1840 census and Coffee County TN per the 1850 census. In the 1860 TX census for DeWitt County, he is living with his daughter and son-in-law. In 1870 he is still with them at age 81. He is not listed on the 1880 census, so he apparently died between 1870 & 1880. One on his sons is Jeremiah Bruce, who is my ggrandfather?

McGREGOR / CAMPBELL
I am Beulah Hoffman Dannelley, a great granddaughter of Dougald McGREGOR. One of his sisters was Christian McGregor b 5 Dec 1795 in Scotland. She married George CAMPBELL. They had 3 sons in Scotland. This information was given by Dougald McGregor to one of his grandsons. Does anyone have anything that connects the McGregors and Campbells of Cumberland County ?
I would appreciate any clues you can give me. Beulah Dannelley Florence, TX    Posted November 29, 2000

THOMPSON / McDOUGAL
Thomas THOMPSON, born about 1760, served in the American Revolution from Cumberland Co. NC. He and his wife, whose name is unknown, moved to McMinn Co., TN about 1817 where he filed for his pension in 1832. They had a daughter, Flora THOMPSON, and may have had a son, also named Thomas.

Flora THOMPSON married Malcom McDOUGAL about 1815 in Cumberland Co. This family also moved to McMinn Co. TN at or about the same time as her parents did.

Thomas THOMPSON'S wife was living in 1833 but deceased by 1840 when Thomas was listed on the 1840 Census of Greene Co. MO in the household of Flora and Malcom McDOUGAL.

Any information about these families, or any clue to where I might find that information, is appreciated. Thanks, Dana Meara    Posted November 14, 2000

DEAVER
I am trying to locate the cemetary that my grandparents were buried in in Fayetteville. It is a large cemetary, probably a city cemetary. I do know that he died in the 1950's. She died a lot earlier, have no idea. I do not know the date they died. I think is name was "Cicero?" DEAVER and his wife was Mary Deaver from Fayetteville. Do you have information on this? His son, Cecil, was also buried in that cemetary. He died about 10 years ago. Thanks, Betsy    Posted November 11, 2000

Would like to share with people researching these lines. The known children of Lauchlin and Mary Colquhoun were:

McMILLAN / FORD
The McMillan I started researching is:
Neill McMILLAN - b. 1795 Cumberland Co, NC, d. abt 1877, Madison Co, TX. m. 1816, Cumberland Co, NC, by Archibald Little, JP to Sarah Agatha FORD - b. 1798 Cumberland co, NC, d. abt 1884, Madison Co, TX

Agatha filed an application for a pension on Neill's War of 1812 service. It was rejected as she could not get affidavits or other proof that he actually served and they had no record. There was another Neill McMillan (wife: Mary) in Cumberland co. who did receive a pension for serving in the same unit. He signed with an"X" and my Neil signed his name. Agatha (in her 80's) struggled for 4 long years to prove he did serve with the unit. The pension file is 64 pages long - includes 3 deeds (to prove his signature) Quoting her Pension Application: "moved to Georgia in 1819 & to Alabama in 1822 & to Florida in 1827 & back to Alabama in 1832 & to Texas in 1850."

As far as I can tell, Neill & Agatha only got caught by the Census Taker in 1850 in Lauderdale Co, MS. Most of their children had left home - in November 1850, they moved to Leon Co, TX. They had lived in Sumter Co., AL, as documented by deeds. Might have been on the 1830 Walton Co, FL Census - but there were several Neill McMillans there at the time. Otherwise, we have no idea which counties in GA, AL, FL they lived in - they did seem to like living on a county/state line and moved from one to the other. (Sumpter Co, AL to Lauderdale Co, MS and Leon Co, TX to Madison Co, TX) The courthouse in Madison Co, TX, burned twice so there are no wills or death records. Most of their children moved to TX also, some then moved on to other TX counties and one to OK. If these people are in your family, I would like to exchange information. Thanks, Edith Dorow Posted November 3, 2000

BETHEA / CAMPBELL / MORRISON
I have Archibald MORRISON (b about 1803 ??) of Cumberland County, NC, m Jerusha BETHEA in Cumberland County and migrated to AL and MS. He and Jerusha both died in Tishomingo County, MS. Family records indicate that his parents were John Morrison and Catherine CAMPBELL Morrison, both b in United Kingdom. They are said to have come to US on a ship named "Queen Isabella " but did not meet until later in NC. I have descendants of Archie and Jerusha. If these people are in your family, I would like to exchange information. Thanks, Bickie Raspilair Guntersville, AL   Posted November 3, 2000
