LOUTZENHEISER HEINRICH
I am doing genealogical work on the family of Heinrich Loutzenheiser. I have an entry by his son in a bible which states: "1792, April 17th, we arrived at our place at the Iack." I have reason to believe that this is somewhere in Cumberland, County. My question is: What is the "Iack"? Is it the name of a river (or abbreviation of a name of a river)? Or what? ??? Can you help? I'm grateful for your response. Please contact Robert G. Nohavec  Posted Feb. 27th, 2000

DIAL
I am researching my Dial lineage and came upon some family-written history stating that there is a town in Cumberland County, NC by the name of DIAL. My Dials went on to Laurens, SC....my line goes back to 1600s. When they came to America, they landed at a place in Virginia called "Dial's Landing" (I'm trying to find that place, too!) then went to Pennsylvania and Delaware, finally to SC from NC. My g-grandparents are Issac Hamilton Dial and Mary Dawson Lard Dial (of Walton County, GA). I also have names, places, and dobs and death dates for further back. I would appreciate it if any of you can tell me where "Dial" is or where it used to be. Thanks! Please contact Martha Clayton Clement  Posted Feb. 22nd, 2000

Searching for anyone that may have info or interest in the family of Stephen PHILLIPS and Flora McALESTER Phillips. He was an apparent lawyer. His name appears on many Cumberland County court records of the era. His wife was the daughter of John and Anne McAlester, of the original Argyll Colony (1739), in the Cape Fear River area.
Children of Stephen and Flora were:
1- Angus Phillips (married Jennet McKethen)
2-Alexander Phillips
3-John Phillips
4-Mary Phillips (married William Bassett)
5-Catherine (married William Gibson)
I'm descended from the Mary Phillips Bassett line, and would love to know more of the others. Both daughters stayed in Cumberland Co., as did Angus, I believe. What of Alexander and John?? Anyone know?

EDWARDS / BRUTON / SMITH
I saw the list of Civil War amputees from Cumberland Co. and recognized my great-great grandfather's name. Edward J. EDWARDS lost an arm at the battle of Chancellorsville, May 1963. He recuperated at Chimborazo hospital in Richmond VA for several months, and was ultimately discharged and returned home to the Fayetteville area. He became a Baptist Minister, and died in 1906. His daughter, Julia Edwards, married Thomas BRUTON in Turkey Creek, Cumberland, CO in the 1880's.

My great great-grandfather, Edward Edwards, was a volunteer serving "for the war" in the 3rd North Carolina Infantry. If anyone has any information about him, other than I have provided, or the Bruton family, Daniel SMITH family, etc., I would love to hear from you. Thank you! I have Edwards war records from the national archives, but little other family info.

My father was Daniel Malloy Smith, Jr., and he was born in Sanford, NC on July 28, 1922 to Daniel M. Smith Sr. and Mary Alma Bruton Smith. My father has been dead for 23 years, and although he was a historian, the family history has not been well documented, at least to my knowledge. POWELL / COLLIER / NIXON
Hello Cumberland "cousins" I am back here again looking for links to the parents of my Father's two Grandfathers. Barney Henry POWELL, died 1924 in Duval Cty Fla, was listed on his death certificate as "born January 1851, Cumberland County NC". I also don't know when Barney Powell went to Florida but he married Sarah Annie Laurie Prescott there in April 1877.[She was born Clay County Fl. in 1856.] Their only surviving son Elmer Powell [b. in Duval Florida, 1882] married a girl who was also b. in NC B. August 1889..supposedly Cumberland Co NC, Louisa "LULA" COLLIER was the only daughter of Joseph Wolf Collier, who married her mother, Narcissa NIXON in Cumberland County Nov. 1887. Narcy was born there in 1861 but I have no lead on Joseph's Family, except that one of his grandaughters is convinced that he was part Indian, and also that he went back to NC to die and is BURIED THERE-- that would have been after 1918/19 when my father was still living with him in Florida. Is there any way to find birth or death information for the county back that far? or is anyone out there researching COLLIER or POWELL? The census and cemetery lists I have seen didn't offer clues. Will be grateful for any help or suggestions. Thanks, Steph Powell Cecil    Posted February 07, 2000

GORDON
I am looking for more information regarding 2 GORDONs listed in the 1790 Cumberland County Census. They are Robert Gordon and William Gordon. I have traced my family roots back to a Robert Gordon (1793-1854). While I have quite a bit of information regarding my Robert Gordon, I do not know where in NC he came from. Furthermore, I know that Robert moved to Mc Minnville, Warren County, Tennessee. All I know about his father is that his name was William and that's it. Finally, I do know the names of Robert's wife (Sarah R.) and his children:

William Gordon (1810-1896)
Patsy Gordon
Isaac Gordon (1815-1859)
Sally Gordon
James Madison Gordon (1828-1892)
David Gordon ( -1910)
Jane Gordon
Benjamin Franklin Gordon (1838- )

I would like to get through this impasse if anyone out there might be able to shed light on whether the gentlemen are the GORDONs that I am seeking. Please write if any of this might look familar to you. T.A. Gordon    Posted February 07, 2000

DUDLEY / KING
Is anyone researching the DUDLEY family of Cumberland County, NC? I am interested in a Dudley woman who might have married a KING. Actually, if a marriage took place between a Dudley and a King it would have to be probably in the 1780's or so. I am going on a wild goose chase, so to speak. I research King's and there is a Guilford/Gilford Dudley King that migrated to Lauderdale Co., AL. from NC by 1830. This Gilford was born about 1789 in NC, but I don't know which county. However he did marry Zilpha Jones in Wake Co., NC. in 1813 and there is a Gilford King household in the 1820 Cumberland Co., NC. census who I believe to be him. Going by his name, Gilford Dudley King, I am assuming that maybe his mother was a Dudley and married a King, thus his name. Most of this is pure speculation on my part, although I have seen a source that stated that a Miss Dudley married a King and they named their son, Gilford Dudley King.

Do you know of a Dudley that married a King by 1789? It is possible this Gilford had brothers named: David and Jesse. Also, this Gilford had children named Drury Minton, Quinton, Hinton, Elizabeth, Margaret, and Elizabeth.

I will have to say that I am not sure if this Gilford Dudley King is connected to me or not, but I am working on his family in the hope to make a connection.

If you know anything, even the smallest little bit of info about this, I would love to hear from you. Judy    Posted January 28, 2000

McLEOD / PAXTON / CONDOR / MATTHEWS
I'm trying to find out something about our McLEOD side of the family and I hope someone can help me. According to my mom's cousins, our first McLeod in this country was Daniel and he probably came up the Cape Fear River to Cross Creek. We are the family of Margaret Ann McLeod who married William Sanford PAXTON in either Union or Mecklenburg county. She had two sisters one married to a CONDOR and the other to a MATTHEWS. One of the Condor granddaughters married a Kerr and recently passed away in Pineville, NC. My mother was the granddaughter of Margaret Ann. When her father, John McLeod Paxton, was a young man in the early 1900's, he went to Texas to find work along with a brother and several McLeod cousins according to my mother. I do not know the names of these cousins. My mother and the cousins I recently spoke to met Dame Flora McLeod when she made her visit to the USA and were so inspired by meeting her that they made themselves skirts with the green McLeod plaid. The cousins still have their skirts.

I believe our John Paxton who died just before the Civil War died in Union County and is buried at the Round Top Cemetery although I've been told that the head stone was flint and has disappeared. There are cousins through his wife's second husband, Charlie Riggins, that saw the tombstone before it vanished. His father's name was listed in the census as M S Paxton.

Does anyone know anything about this line? Thanks. Please contact: Nancy    Posted January 15, 2000

SHEPPARD
Seeking anyone researching the family of Andrew SHEPPARD, who came from Scotland to Cumberland Co., NC in 1758, served in the NC Line, and then moved to GA. in the 1790's and into Butler Co., AL. abt. 1818.

My ancestor, Andrew SHEPPARD's Rev. War Pension App. states that he came to Cumberland Co., NC in 1758, at the age of 1, from Cumberlandshire Scotland. However, from several maps that I looked at, Cumberlandshire was actually in England. In reading a history of Cumberlandshire, it did say that many Scots went there for work after the defeat of the Jacobites. Does anyone know if Cumberlandshire was ever a part of Scotland or why Andrew might have put that on his application ? Thanks for any info.
