BETSY BRADSHER JONES
COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - My beloved mother, Betsy Bradsher Jones, died in Colorado Springs, Colo. on Sept. 6, 2002 after a long illness. She was the daughter of Margaret Pierce Jones and the granddaughter of Vance and Matilda Pierce. Mom was born in Raleigh and lived in North Carolina for 10 years, even attending Hallsboro schools for a time, before moving to Norfolk, Va. Growing up, she and her younger sisters spent every summer in Hallsboro with their grandparents and with their aunts and uncles and cousins. The Hallsboro friends Mom made became her friends for life. I cherish the many memories of shared time with Mom and especially her many happy memories of Lake Waccamaw, Hallsboro and Whiteville. For the last 45 years, Mom made Colorado her home, where she was a legal secretary, a mountain justice of the peace, a teacher and a realtor. Her interests included music, art and travel. She was herself an accomplished artist and singer, and in her travels she loved any new experience. Mom was widowed in 1975 after 17 years of marriage to Paul Ray Jones, a native Coloradan. My Mom had a life-time commitment to stay in touch with her friends and relatives through her hundreds of annual Christmas and birthday cards, and her frequent phone calls. For this, she is well remembered. But mostly, she was a loving and devoted Mother. My Mom is survived by her two sisters: Ann Bradsher Pierce and her children: Raymond Owens and Anna Owens; and Marie Bradsher Cowan and her children: Michael Cowan, David Cowan, and Jennifer Cowan Heuser. The family will honor Mom-s wishes for her ashes to be buried in the Pierce Family Cemetery, adjacent to her grandparents. A memorial service will be held at Hallsboro Baptist Church on Saturday, Oct. 12 at 4 p.m. by the Rev. Joseph Russ. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Remembrances may be made to: The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 120 Wall Street, New York, N.Y. 10005-4001, Attn: Memorial gifts in memory of Bettina "Betsy" Katherine Jones.
