MONTOURSVILLE, PA - Harvey M Beck, 59, formerly of the Williams Township area, passed away Friday, Sept. 24, 2004. He was born Sept. 10, 1945 and was the son of the late Furnie McLean and Annie Ruth Beck. He was the Distribution Manager for Schnieder Valley Dairy Products, of Williamsport, Pa.
Funeral services were conducted Tuesday, Sept. 28 by Spitler Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald O. Doan presiding. Interment was in the Montoursville Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Hardie Beck of the home; three sons: Terry M. Beck and wife Rickie of Lockhaven, Pa., Trent R. Beck and wife Tammie of Allenwood, Pa. and Aaron R. Beck and wife Amber of Montoursville, Pa. and two grandchildren: Josh Beck and Airianna Beck.

MARY E CUTHRELL

SALISBURY - Mary Ellington Cuthrell, 85, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004 at her residence. She was the daughter of the late William V. and Mary Taylor Ellington. She was preceded in death by a son Hiram J. Cuthrell Jr.
She was a graduate of Rocky Mount High School and the University of North Carolina, Greensboro. She taught school in Snow Hill, Goldsboro, Whiteville, Salisbury and Wayne Community College.
Cuthrell was a member of the First United Methodist Church; the Mr. and Mrs. Sunday school class; and the North Carolina Association of Educators.
Final rites were held Sunday, Oct. 3 at the Chapel of the First United Methodist Church by the Dr. Thomas L. Griffis.
She is survived by her husband, Hiram J. Cuthrell, whom she married April 13, 1943; son: Dr. William V. Cuthrell of Louisville, Ky.; daughter: Lee C. Spada of North Ridge, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

DEXTER SMITH

EVERGREEN - Dexter Smith, 73, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2004 at Premier Living at Lake Waccamaw. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army.
Final rites will be held Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 1 p.m. at Horace Grove Baptist Church by the Rev. Ronald Williams. Interment will follow in Smith Memorial Garden in Boardman.
He is survived by a brother, Walter Smith of Fairmont.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Monday from noon until 7 p.m. and Tuesday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Tuesday from 12-1 p.m. There will be no viewing after the service. The family will receive friends Monday, Oct. 4 from 6 to 7 p.m. at the Peoples Funeral Chapel.
Friends may visit the family at the home of Jackie Tyler, Myles Court, Boardman.

Veteran, Boy Scout leader, storekeeper, constable
BOLTON - Ernest Sylvester Jacobs, 84, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004 at his home.
He was the son of the late William and Rettie Jacobs and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church. He owned and operated a country store, served on the Columbus County School Board, was a Boy Scout leader of Troop 502, was a constable at Columbus County Courthouse and was on the Advancement Board of Capital Finance Economic Development. He was a veteran having served in the U.S. Army.
Final rites with military honors will be conducted Wednesday, Oct. 6 at 2 p.m. at New Hope Baptist Church, Bolton, by the Reverends Don Carter and Mike Cummings. Interment will be in the Red Hill Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Juanita Freeman Jacobs; a daughter: Joyce Jacobs of Bolton; a son: Eugene Jacobs of Bolton; a brother: Rex Allen Jacobs of Bolton; 11 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two daughters: Judy Jacobs and Barbara Ann Jacobs; a son: Phil Jacobs; a brother: Jolly Jacobs; and a great-grandson: Curtis Blake Freeman.
The family will receive friends Tuesday, Oct. 5 from 5-8:30 p.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines.

WHITEVILLE - Hazel S. Ward, 74, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was born Sept. 22, 1920 in Brunswick County, the daughter of the late Jesse Lou and Katie Florence Andrews Smith. She was a member of Palmyra Baptist Church, a member of the church choir and a Sunday school teacher. She was a homemaker and former assistant manager of Ward-s Salvage Co.
Final rites will be conducted Monday, Oct. 4 at 2 p.m. at Palmyra Baptist Church by the Rev. Oscar Hullender. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Billy Ward; two daughters: Jackie McKeithan and husband Eugene of Nakina and Mary Thompson and husband Doug of Whiteville; a brother: Billy Smith and wife Nancy of Ash; a sister: Sheila Howard of Shallotte; four grandchildren: Jason Faulk and wife Mary Beth, Wyatt Richardson and wife Tina, Anya Bryant and husband Rocky, Deanna Thompson and Ricky McKeithan; three great-grandchildren: Wesley Bryant, Roxanna Bryant and Matthew Richardson.
She was preceded in death by a sister: Hester Babson.

CRUSOE ISLAND - Garland Monroe Long, 88, died Sunday, Oct. 3, 2004.
He was born Oct. 22, 1915 in Columbus County, the son of the late Richard and Della Suggs Long. He was a retired minister, having served as pastor of many churches in the area including Camp Branch Baptist Church of Bolton, Magnolia Baptist Church of Crusoe Island, Longwood Baptist Church of Longwood, Mt. Zion Baptist Church of Tabor City, Zion Baptist Church of Shallotte, Bethany Baptist Church of Loris, S.C. and Pleasant Union Baptist Church in Horry County, S.C. He was a member of Magnolia Baptist Church. He was preceded in death by his wife, the late Bessie McKeithan Long.
Final rites will be conducted Tuesday, Oct. 5 at 2 p.m. at Magnolia Baptist Church by the Reverends Olease Boyd and Dock Rayburn. Interment will be in Camp Branch Baptist Church Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his daughter, Carleen Clewis of Whiteville; a granddaughter: Wanda Gayle Formyduval of Whiteville; and two great-grandchildren: Marlon Shane Formyduval and Natalie Formyduval Goins, both of Whiteville.

LUMBERTON - Cora Lutie Walters Bass, 88, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center, Lumberton.
Final rites were conducted Monday, Oct. 4 at Floyd Memorial Chapel by the Rev. Raymond Ellis. Floyd Mortuary of Lumberton handled the arrangements.
She is survived by a son: Jimmy Bass of Sanford; five daughters: Geraldine B. Altman of Cross, S.C., Grace B. Britt of Lumberton, Becky B. Fain of Waynesville, Dilys B. Stowell of Norfolk, Va. and Jane B. Holt of Florence, S.C.; a brother: English Walters of Lumberton; three sisters: Mary W. Ivey of Lumberton, Mildred W. Branch of Evergreen and Sadie W. Nance of Elizabethtown; 10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

WHITEVILLE - Archie Toon Jr., 59, died Friday, Oct. 1, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. at Cherry Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Rev. James Smith. Interment will be in the Cherry Grove Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife, Alice W. Toon; four daughters: Michelle T. McAllister of Tabor City, Kimberly Ann Toon and Cetrina Toon, both of Whiteville and Angeline Dickers of New York; three sons: Deautry Toon and Andre Toon, both of Whiteville and Clinton Smith of Chadbourn; and two sisters: Arbedella Richardson and Dorothy Shipman, both of Whiteville.
Viewing will be at the funeral home Thursday from noon until 7 p.m. and Friday from 9-11 a.m. Viewing will be at the church Friday following the service.

RIEGELWOOD - Lonie Graham, 86, died Saturday, Oct. 2, 2004 at Elizabethtown Nursing Center.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. from Tabernacle Holiness Church with Bishop Odell Fulton eulogizing. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Smith Funeral Home of Whiteville is handling the arrangements.
She is survived by five children: Erma Graham and O-Neal Graham, both of Riegelwood, Robert Graham of Asheboro, Shirley Vaughan of Fayetteville and Julius Graham of Woodbridge, Va.; four sisters: Ruby Sidberry, Rutha Roberson and Linda Daniels, all of Riegelwood and Juanita Pender of Wallace; and two brothers: James Graham of Council and Cleveland Graham of Riegelwood.
The body may viewed one hour prior to the service at the church.

WHITEVILLE - Mattie G. Spaulding, 87, died Monday, Oct. 4, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital. She was a school cafeteria manager and a seamstress.
Final rites will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Sandy Plain Missionary Baptist Church in Clarkton by the Rev. Thurman Chestnutt. Burial will be in the Mitchell Field Cemetery in Clarkton.
Survivors include a sister: Remonia George-Clarke of East Elmhurst, N.Y.; two brothers: Emmett George of Palm Desert, Calif., and Rodney George of Lumberton.

Final rites will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Second United Presbyterian Church in Elizabethtown. Burial will be in the Bladen Memorial Gardens.

Former employee of N.C. Dept. of Agri. and Consumer Service, farmer, and carpenter
KELLY - Donald Jackson Kelly, 79, died Wednesday, Oct. 6, 2004 at his residence.
He was born Sept. 2, 1925 in Bladen County and was the son of the late Waitus Avant Kelly and Alice Odessa Squires Kelly.
He was a Bladen County farmer, carpenter and worked with the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture and Consumer Services in the Witchweed Eradication Program for many years. He served on the Kelly Volunteer Fire Department Board of Trustees and was very supportive of the Kelly Rescue squad. He was a member of Centerville Baptist Church where he had served as Sunday school teacher and deacon.
Funeral services will be Friday at 11 a.m. at Centerville Baptist Church with the Revs. Teddy Lawson and Jack Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Garden of Memories Cemetery, Kelly.
Survivors include his wife of 56 years: Geneva Barnhill Kelly of the home; three daughters: Pamela Kelly Garrell of Delco, Donnette Kelly Mitchell of Kelly and Cherry Kelly Simmons of Wilmington; brother: Haywood Kelly of Kelly; three grandchildren and one step-great-grandson.

WILMINGTON - Rachel C. Fulcher, 80, formerly of Raleigh, went to be with the Lord on Tuesday, Oct. 5, 2004.
She was born on Sept. 18, 1924 in Columbus County, the daughter of the late Byron and Blanche Martin. She was preceded in death by her husband, Billy T. Fulcher; a brother, Van Buren Martin and a sister, Margaret Martin Gibson.
She was a retired personal officer for the N.C. Department of Justice under the authority of Attorneys General Robert Morgan, Rufus Edmisten and Lacy Thornburg. She was a current member of the Winter Park Baptist Church in Wilmington and a past member of the Bay Leaf Baptist Church in Raleigh.
Funeral services will be conduced at 11 a.m. Friday in the Bay Leaf Baptist Church Chapel, 12200 Bayleaf Church Rd., Raleigh by Dr. Ronald Rowe.
Graveside services will be conducted at 4 p.m. Friday at the Brown-Martin Family Cemetery, 3701 Princess Anne Rd., Chadbourn by the Rev. Michael Tutterow.

A native of Columbus County, she was born May 27, 1920, the daughter of the late Jasper Harrelson and Willie J. Ward Butler. She was a member of the Church of Christ in Whiteville. She was formerly employed with Dawsey-s Rest Home for more than 18 years.
She is survived by her daughter: Pat Mitchell of Lake Waccamaw; a sister: Retha Worley of Palatka, Fla.; a grandson: Scott Mitchell of Richmond, Va. and two great-grandsons: Patrick Mitchell and Ryan Farrell-Ellis.
Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 9 at Peacock-s Columbus Memorial Park by the Revs. Phillip Norwood and Neil Floyd.
Prior to her services her family will receive friends from 10-11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home.

Funeral services were held Sunday, Oct. 10 at Beaverdam Original Freewill Baptist Church, conducted by the Revs. William Jackie Godwin and James Howard Nobles. Burial followed in the Hinson Cemetery, Clarendon.
He is survived by three sons: Rev. William Jackie Godwin and Charles Perry Godwin, both of Clarendon; and Jerry L. Godwin of Valparaiso, Ind.; four sisters: Mortie McPherson, Eva Walker and Mattie McPherson, all of Chadbourn; and Myrtie Sellers of Whiteville; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He is survived by one son: Gary R. Munce of New Bern, three daughters: Regina Holmes of Loris, S.C.; Janet M. Moore of Denver and Paula M. Rogers of Whiteville; one sister: Emily Bryant of Florida; 11 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

TABOR CITY - William -Bill- Wilson, 73, died Saturday, Oct. 9, 2004 at his residence. He was the son of the late Nathan McQueen Wilson Sr. and Mittie Richardson.
Final rites were conducted Monday, Oct. 11 at the Inman Funeral Home Chapel by the Revs. Roger Small and Wilbur Fipps. Burial followed in the Forest Lawn Cemetery.
He is survived by his wife: Jackie H. Wilson of Tabor City; two daughters: Sherri Gore and Donna Coskrey, both of Florence, S.C.; one sister: Margaret W. Rollins of Durham; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Veteran, minister, farmer and co-owner of Walker Mobile Homes
CHADBOURN - Graham Walker, 94, died Saturday at Columbus County Hospital, Whiteville. He was the son of the late Henry and Ella Lee Penny Walker and predeceased by his first wife, Evelyn Fipps Walker.
Walker was a Pentecostal Holiness minister, and a farmer where he was known throughout the southeast as the -Strawberry King.- He was very successful for many years as one of Columbus County-s largest strawberry farmers, having been one of the first from North Carolina to experiment with the plastic method used by Florida growers.
He also was founder and co-owner of Walker Mobile Homes in Chadbourn, having earned the nick name of the -original mobile home man.- He retired in 1979 at which time his son Harold assumed responsibilities. He was a veteran serving in the Army.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12 at Chadbourn Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Revs. Jim Skinner, Jimmy Hodge and Jim Forehand officiating. Interment will follow in the Fipps Cemetery, Chadbourn.
Surviving family include his wife: Foy Mae Jordan Walker of the home; daughters: Rachel W. Thomas of Safety Harbor, Fla. and Pat W. Wade of Surfside Beach, S.C.; son: Harold D. She was the daughter of the late Charles Monroe Carroll and Katie Register Carroll and the widow of Joy Wendell Formyduval. She was a life long member of Shiloh United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by four sisters: Clara Alene Carroll, Theola Watts, Myrtle Osborne and Mamie Griffin; three brothers: Charles Kary Carroll, Richard Carroll and James Ervin Carroll; and one grandson: Jonathan Carroll Houser.

GASTONIA - Norwood Bennett "Ches" Chestnutt Jr, 76, died Sunday, Oct. 10, 2004 at Gaston Memorial Hospital.
A native of Whiteville, he was the son of the late Col. Norwood B. Chestnutt Sr. and Mabel Chinnis Chestnutt. He attended the Citadel, UNC-Chapel Hill and graduated from Duke University class of 1948. After graduation, he was employed as an inspector with the N.C. Dept. of Agriculture and for several years, played semi-pro baseball in the Eastern N.C. leagues. He then worked as a loan officer with First Citizens Bank in Dunn and was transferred to Gastonia where he became vice-president of loan administration. There he met his wife of 41 years, Faith Chavis Chestnutt, who died in Dec. 2003. Ches began working with his father-in-law as vice-president of Chavis Textiles in Gastonia. He later became a stockbroker with the Goodbody and Co. Charlotte office, then opened C&B Machine Co. in Ft. Mill and Auctioneer-s Inc. in Gastonia where he was the owner/operator until his retirement. He was a long time member of First United Methodist Church, Gastonia, and the Gaston Country Club.
Final rites will be conducted Friday, Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. in the Founders Chapel of McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia by the Rev. John Stanley. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the funeral home. McLean Funeral Directors of Gastonia is in charge of the arrangements.

LUMBERTON - John Claussen Rogers Jr., formerly of Fair Bluff, died Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004.
He was the son of the late Pauline and Claussen Rogers of Fair Bluff. He began his banking career in 1947 with the Farmers and Merchants Bank of Fair Bluff and through mergers, retired from the First Union National Bank 33 years later in 1980. He became town clerk of Fair Bluff in 1981 and retired from that position in 1996. He then became assistant town clerk for six years.
He loved baseball and played several years on the old Border Belt League. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict and was a member of the American Legion Unit 204. He was a member of Ten Mile Baptist Church and former member of Fair Bluff Baptist Church.
Final rites will be conducted Monday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. at Ten Mile Baptist Church of Lumberton. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Meares Funeral Home of Fair Bluff is handling the arrangements.

Born in the Cedar Grove Community of Columbus County on Oct. 19, 1927, he was the son of the late Nassa A and Lura J Powers Blackwell. He served in the U.S. Navy for 27 years and worked with Furman University for 20 years. He also worked during tax season for H&R Block as a tax preparer. He was a member of the Retired Officers Association (retired chief warrant officer) and the American Legion, Post #3.

LONGWOOD - Herbert Cortez "H C" Ward Sr., 80, died Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 at his home.
He was born in Brunswick County, the son of the late George and Alpha Bennett Ward. He was a farmer, rural mail carrier, Recorders Court Judge, Brunswick County Commissioner, past deacon of Friendship Baptist Church.

TABOR CITY - Alfa Aline Fowler, 82, of Baltimore, Md., died Sunday, Oct. 18, 2004 in Loris Community Hospital.
She was born in Horry County, S.C., the daughter of the late Luther and Dolly Ann Fowler Watts. She was the widow of McDavid Fowler.

HERBERT MERTZ JR

NORTH PALM BEACH, Fla. - Herbert Mertz Jr., 89, passed away Saturday, Sept. 16, 2004.
He was born in Chicago, Ill. Jan. 2, 1915.
At age 10, he contracted infantile paralysis, causing his family to move to New York City for his treatment. He overcame this weakness to become a champion tennis player. He was a member of the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity at the University of Chicago, graduating in 1937. He worked for Jones and Laughlin Steel Corporation for several years. After Pearl Harbor, he volunteered for the U.S. Army, but received a medical discharge. He then went to work for the War Production Board in Washington, D.C. He established the business, Structure Components, which he ran from 1958 to 1985, providing steel and aluminum for bridges and filtration plants in the Washington, D.C. area.
He had strong feelings on government policy, which caused him to run several times for national and local office. Music and dancing were his passions, which he enjoyed for many years at the Breakers, the Colony and the Brazilian Court hotels in Florida. His wife, Rachel, was his lifelong dancing partner.
A memorial service will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at McKenzie Mortuary.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, the former Rachel Schulken; two children: Marguerite Baker and Herbert Mertz III; and three grandchilddren: Johanna Baker, Roseanne Baker and Ian Mertz.

WHITEVILLE - Carl Andrew "Sonny" Herring, 55, died Tuesday, Oct. 19, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was born April 30, 1949 in Columbus County, the son of Carl and Edna Dew Herring. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and was formerly employed with the N.C. Department of Corrections and Columbus County Animal Control.
Final rites with military honors will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at 2 p.m. at Peacock-s Chapel In The Pines by the Rev. D.J. Cartrette. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. Peacock Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

GAITHERSBURG, Md - Pearl Hoover Fowler, 90, died in her sleep Friday, Oct. 15, 2004 of complications from Parkinson-s Disease.
She was born Jan. 18, 1914 in Statesville and grew up in Chadbourn. She was a longtime resident of Whiteville until moving to Gaithersburg, Md. to be close to her daughter and grandsons after her retirement in 1970. She was a graduate of Appalachian State Teacher-s College and taught school in Columbus County. She worked for many years and retired from the N.C. Department of Social Services in Columbus County. When her husband, the late Arthur W. Fowler was in the Army during WWII, the couple lived in New York City. She was a member of Whiteville First Baptist Church and was active in social and service groups in Whiteville and Gaithersburg. She loved to play the piano and enjoyed playing bridge with her many friends in Gaithersburg. She traveled extensively after retirement including trips to Canada, England, Scotland and eastern Europe and particularly enjoyed fall excursions to see the colorful autumn foliage.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at 1 p.m. at Whiteville First Baptist Church by the Rev. Kendell Cameron Jr. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur Werner Fowler May 10, 1977, her only child: Susan Gray Fowler Moyer May 6, 1999 and her parents: Cowan Gray Hoover and Adelaide Susan Hoover of Chadbourn.

WHITEVILLE - Dora S. Kramer, 90, passed away Monday, Oct. 18, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
She was born in High Point Sept. 20, 1914, the daughter of the late Celia and Max Samet. She was preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Isadore Kramer and her son Larry, who died in 1962.
Mrs. Kramer moved to Whiteville as a bride and always considered it to he her home. Even after she moved to Florida in 1972, she would spend the summer in Cherry Grove Beach, S.C. She had lived with her sister-in-law and brother-in-law Doris and Hyman Kramer for the last four years.
She managed Kramer-s Ladies Shop for many years. She had varied interests over the years which included cooking, entertaining and working with many civic organizations. She especially had a passion for baking.
A graveside service was held Tuesday, Oct. 19 at High Point Hebrew Cemetery.
She is survived by her brother, Moses Samet and wife Elsie of Woodstock, Va.; brother and sister-in-laws: Doris and Hyman Kramer of Whiteville, Sylvia Leder, Jeanette Turner, Mollie Leiken of South Florida, Ethel Kramer of Wrightsville Beach and Vivian Kramer of Wallace; many nieces and nephews including Michael and Terri Kramer and Gary and Robin Kramer, all of Whiteville and Celia and Steve Chase of Charleston, S.C.

Born Nov. 27, 1918 in Tabor City, he was the husband of the late Virginia Long Soles and the son of the late J.C. and Sudie Soles. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII, a retired merchant and of the Baptist faith.

GREENSBORO - William Roger Soles, 84, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at Well Spring Assisted Living.
He was born Sept. 16, 1920 in Whiteville, the son of the late John William and Margaret
Watts Soles. He graduated as valedictorian from Whiteville High School at the age of 14, the school-s youngest graduate ever. He attended The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill before joining the Army Air Corps at the onset of WWII. After the war, he returned to UNC-CH and earned a BS degree in commerce. He joined Jefferson Standard Life (later Jefferson-Pilot) where he rose in the ranks rapidly, eventually becoming president in 1967. He was active in industry and community affairs and served on the boards of many oganizations.
Final rites will be conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at 11 a.m. at West Market Street United Methodist Church with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery. Hanes-Lineberry Funeral Home of Greensboro is handling the arrangements.

WHITEVILLE - Mildred Lee Pearson Moss, beloved grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away Thursday, Oct. 21, 2004 after a lengthy illness.
She was born in Fairmont Aug. 17, 1908 to the late Dr. W.L. Pearson and Marion Swett Pearson. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Torrey Moss, originally of Spartanburg, S.C. and then Whiteville, and their son: Kenneth R. Moss Sr., who resided in Jackson, Fla. until the time of his death.
Mrs. Moss was an alumna of Greensboro Woman-s College. She was a member of Whiteville United Methodist Church where she attended the ladies Sunday school class. She was a charter member of the Whiteville Garden Club from which she recently received the honor of a lifetime membership. She was also a charter member of the Whiteville Woman-s Club where she held several offices.
Her hobbies included reading, gardening, politics, playing bridge, spending time at the beach with friends and traveling. She was known for her sense of humor, quick wit and love of debating politics.
A celebration of her life will be held Tuesday, Oct. 26 at 3 p.m. at McKenzie Mortuary Chapel by the Reverends David Benson and Anne Natoli. Interment will be in Whiteville Memorial Cemetery. McKenzie Mortuary is handling the arrangements.
The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2-2:45 p.m. prior to the service and at other times at the home of John and Susan Deans, 1311 Spivey Road, Whiteville.

She was born in Columbus County to the late George and Nell Thompson Wayne. For many years, she was a high school guidance counselor and English teacher in Ellerbe and the Charlotte Mecklenburg School District. She was loved and respected by her students and family for her sharp wit, her intellect and her love for travel.

CHADBOURN - Edward Alvie Smith, 83, died Saturday, Oct. 30, 2004 at Columbus County Hospital.
He was born June 18, 1921, the son of the late Braxton and Lillie Ikner Smith of Whiteville. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Catherine Redwine Smith and brothers, Ezra and Ethell Smith and sisters, Margie Smith, Betty Nealy, Ila Mae Tyner, Ruby Pate and Lucille Garrell. He was a proud Army veteran of WWII where he served in the Asiatic Pacific Theater. He was a well-known upholsterer in Whiteville in his earlier years and later in life, lawn mowers became his work and hobby.
Final rites will be conducted Monday, Oct. 25 at 2 p.m. from Worthington Funeral Home by the Reverends Mitchell Smith and Willard McPherson. Interment will be in Chadbourn Memorial Cemetery. Worthington Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

RIEGELWOOD - Charles Truman Butts, 83, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at his residence, surrounded by his family.
He was born in Alabama, the son of the late Joseph and Tishie Jane Butts. He was affiliated with Federal Paper Company for many years until his retirement. He was a member of Riegelwood Baptist Church. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army during WWII and fought in Northern France and Germany.
Final rites were conducted Saturday, Oct. 23 at Riegelwood Baptist Church by the Reverends Charles Hester and Larry Knowles. Interment was in the church cemetery. Coble Ward-Smith Funeral Home handled the arrangements.
He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Lois Sylvia Ivie Butts of the home; a son: Charles Michael Butts of Lake Waccamaw; a daughter: Barbara Butts Hamme of Riegelwood; three grandchildren: Nicole Norris, Holly Butts and Robyn Hamme; and one great-grandchild, Kyla Norris.

She was the daughter of the late Oliver Zeno Faircloth and Prudence Anderson Faircloth.

He was born in Marion County, S.C., the son of the late John L. Clemons Jr. and Inez Floyd Clemons. He graduated from Tabor City High School in 1957 and attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He received an AB degree from the University of Georgia with a major in journalism in 1961 and was a member of Kappa Sigma Fraternity. He also served in the U.S. Naval Reserve. Mr. Clemons wrote for newspapers in Charleston, S.C., Myrtle Beach, S.C., Beverly and Lynn, Mass. and Palo Alto, Calif. He was a member of Green Sea Baptist Church.
Graveside services will be conducted Thursday, Oct. 28 at 4 p.m. in the Green Sea Cemetery, Green Sea, S.C. Inman Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

He was born March 22, 1962 to the late Albert Walker Jr. and Rosa Mae Godwin Walker. He was raised by his beloved grandmother, the late Gussie H. Godwin of Whiteville. He was formerly a resident at The Masonic Home for Children at Oxford (formerly Oxford Orphanage).
He is survived by three sisters: Mary Kathryn -Kathy- Mack and husband Johnny of Wendell, Cynthia -Cindy- Walker and Wendy Walker Hewett and husband Ricky, both of Whiteville; a brother: Ricky D.
